"Castle Rock Construction is a phenomenal company to work with.
, the owner, is fantastic and a true professional. Because their workmanship is remarkable I" have contracted with him for several projects. He has remodeled two bathrooms, installed several exterior doors, custom designed two interior doors, installed a wood-look ceramic tile floor for a family room (the room looks like new) and designed and built a side porch (deck). During the construction of each project
and his team would clean up every speck of dust or debris at the end of each day. His prices are very reasonable compared to other companies. When changes are needed
will always take time to consultant with you and explain the reason for the change. There is no high-pressure salesman who tries to force you to commit to this company. Everything went well and the end product is truly amazing and excellent, I could not have asked for a better experience. I would highly recommend Castle Rock Construction to anyone looking to do improvements to their home.

"When I met
the first time he showed up with his plumber and electrician to see what I wanted done.I had my insurance adjuster's reprort with me, I thought" the adjuster's estimate was low and doubted the house could be made livable within those parameters. The mitigation company had even taken out my bathroom fixtures and the insurance did not cover the cost of new fixtures.I suggested keeping the old tile to save a few thousand.
said the tile was dated and needed to be replaced. I told
I needed to stay within the insurance allowance. The rebuild estimate
gave me was within the insurance. I expected to have to choose lower grade materials and to cut corners whenever possible. What I got was first rate materials and beauiful finishing. At all times
made the process easy for me. More than once he told me he wanted me to be pleased with the result. I am so impressed with
. Clearly this company is guided by pride in the finished product. I do not know how
managed to do the rebuild within the insurance allowance but he did and the house looks wonderful. Really impressive! This is the dream builder.

"After getting several bids we chose
because of his reasonable bid and Fergal's friendly personality. We felt that this was someone that we could have a" pleasant working relationship with. Getting started took a little bit longer while we waited for the city to give the permits. Fergal kept in touch throughout the process to keep us up to date. Once he got the OK, he started work with his team quickly and efficiently. We were able to do much of the finish work ourselves (like painting & such) to save a little bit of money, and Fergal worked with us on that without giving the impression that he needed to do it all himself. He kept us informed, and was always available to answer any questions. His team was just as pleasant to work with as he was. I cant' imagine working with a friendlier group of people. We are particular about good workmanship, and were not disappointed. He has gained our trust, and would not hesitate to hire him again for our other projects.

I agree with Jim Casper - after about 50 years of dealing with weathered wood finishing both in my homes and in the construction business, it comes down to about 90% preparation, 10% the finishing. If you do not prep the wood right, any moisture, mold, etc in the wood will destroy whatever you put over it.

High-build finishes like paint and epoxies and, from reading the Rustoleum flyer on this new product that too, work by trying to make an impenetrable surface and depend on a very good bond with the surface, AND no water getting under them. Because they are thick and are designed to provide a waterproof surface, unfortunately where water gets under them they are just as good or better at keeping it from evaporating, so you get fungal growth, blistering, and peeling.

Unfortunately, on deck and most outdoor applications except siding the surface will get nicked, scratched and otherwise develop leaks in short order. Water will therefore get into the underlying wood, and because it entered through small cracks and scratches, does not have any airflow to make it evaporate, so it sits there and breaks the finish bond to the wood (causing peeling and blisters), and promotes decay. That is why new deck boards and siding and trim that have been heavily or multi-coat painted on all 4 sides, thinking that will give the best protection, only last a few years versus the usual 10-20 years or so for boards that are painted top and sides only.

The full sun and hot conditions will, of course, cause more thann normal heating of dark colored painted decking. I had one instance where I was doing an independent appraisal of a very large commercial deck at a government facility, and in 85-90 degree daytime temps, in the sushine the chocolate brown deck surface temp was 150 degrees, and the paint was softening so much it stuck to the bottom of your shoes a couple of months after application.

As Jim said, the studies pretty clearly show that a breathable penetrating stain gives the best life, after plain ACA/CCA (copper chromium variations - the green stuff) treated wood. Penetrating stains, properly applied, do NOT seal in the moisture, they inhibit its entry and (when dark colored) help protect against sun damage to the wood and finish, but still breathe enough to let moisture escape on dry days. For my money, I will only use petroleum distillate (paint thinner cleanup) products, as they penetrate into the wood much better. Water based ones immediately start swelling the wood pores, so it blocks further penetration of the stain, which while cleanup is a bit easier, totally defeats the purpose of a PENETRATING stain or sealer.

I would recommend against any sort of waterproofing sealer, as they trap the water just like paint, and I have never seen one that is effective for 2 years.

My personal preference, though it limits the architectural coloration possibilities, is ground-contact rated copper compound treated wood (NOT the Wolmanized brown product), which comes green initially but can be retreated with either green or brown solution or can be liquid colorized darker (though not easily to a specific tone) using either of those as a base. My practice is to redo the treatment before installation to ensure thorough treatment, as from the mill it commonly has skips where boards contacted each other or where stacking seperators laid on it, and the ends are commonly very poorly done. This is done after cutting to length, as cut ends have to be retreated anyway.  A simple short deck cleaner soak followed by a light pressure washing and brush or roller re-treating of ONLY the TOP surface every 10 years or so has, for me, reduced visible weathering of the boards and beams to negligible.

?

The product has evolved considerably since the lawsuit.

I would still do your own research and give you contractor your feedback.  At the end of the day, the cost for whatever board you want will be similar.

?
As stated by others: You get what you pay for.  Many contractors no longer use employees.  The cost/benefit ratio is gone by the time worker's comp. insurance, unemplyment and other taxes are paid.  Especially with the high turnover in our industry.  Many, myself included, have our guys set up as sub-contractors.  That means even if the job is only for a day the duties have been outlined and a set pay to complete those duties has been established from the onset.  It's a better way to manage costs once I got used to it.  Also, it means I can operate cheaper and not have to charge as much to the customer.  My agreements with my guys, which they sign, make it clear that I nor the homeowner are responsible for their safety and medical care should a problem arise and that all parties are relieved of any such obligation.  If you hire a contractor who follows this growing practice ask to see a copy of his sub-contractor agreement.

That being said, a legitimate contractor still has operating cost which vary by area and how they run their business.  I break even at $150/day not including labor and materials so I've got to charge more than that to make money.  To keep the math simple, if I'm paying $250 for a pne day job in labor plus another $300 in materials and $150 operating costs I've got to charge $700 to the customer to break even.  That's if I'm only doing one job a day which is why most of us manage several at a time.  The point I'm trying to make is that someone with the necessary knowledge and experience to build you a safe deck is not going to be cheap.  Knowledge accompanies success which costs money.

I've repaired or restructured several decks built by handymen who should find another profession.  Ask yourself this question when hiring someone for this project: Would I trust this person to build my house?  If the answer is no you need to find someone else.  The deck is just as important.  It's where your family, friends, kids are going to gather and interact.  If it isn't structurally sound it can collapse causing injury or even death.  One last word on decks: Always screw a deck together, don't nail it.

We could not be happier with
Eagle River Deck Builders Provider Name Locked
! From the very start
Eagle River Deck Builders Provider Name Locked
was by far the most personable and helpful contractor that we had bid the job. Furthermore,
Eagle River Deck Builders Provider Name Locked
's bids were substantially lower than his competition (and he was quoting the exact same materials). As for the project itself, his crew was great; they were extremely professional and got the job done even faster than we anticipated. We could not give
Eagle River Deck Builders Provider Name Locked
a stronger recommendation.

I called to have an estimate for a repair of a leaky valley on my roof and also the cost of a total re-roof if it was needed and within my budget. The provider was responsive from the first contact and came out when they said they would; however, after I stated I wanted to get one or two other estimates (which took me more than a month), I contacted the company and was told they would get back to me to affect the repair. I never received a call back (I spoke with the owner the day I called in September!) and since then my calls (2) have gone to voicemail with no responses. A
Eagle River Deck Builders Provider Name Locked
"we are no longer interested in fixing your roof" would have been fine. A no response and no return of phone calls is just unprofessional!
I understand they probably wanted the total re-roof job but it was not within my budget at this time and the repair was what I really needed. Although the reviews on Angie's List are good, my experience was no so.

and his crew couldn't have done a better job. The deck is absolutely gorgeous and super solid. The deck also has "Easy-Breeze" windows which we love so we can close it up on cold or windy days and still use our deck. The deck has a lovely shingled roof and a glass and screen storm door. Every detail is exquisite and they cleaned up every scrap of the old deck and their materials when they were done and left the yard immaculate.
Oh and I had some water damage around my bay window on the back of the house and they fixed this for me and put up new siding without any issue.
These guys are true master craftsmen and I would not use anybody else for this type of work. They are a small crew and do one deck at a time. No big company with crews working on multiple jobs.
I plan to definitely recommend

to everyone I know and I wish them the very best.

was very quick to respond to our request for an estimate. Within 3 days of meeting with him, he and his building partner,
Eagle River Deck Builders Provider Name Locked
were out putting in the deck. Although our cedar deck flooring was in bad condition, the support structure below was in great shape. They put in new fasteners in the support structure as needed and completed the whole deck in one day.
Their workmanship was top quality. They placed the boards diagonally, and only two places needed a seam due to additional length needed. Their attention to detail was superb and they were a pleasure to work with.

I set up a meeting with
Eagle River Deck Builders Provider Name Locked
by mistake, thinking they were a design/build company. We are interviewing these companies and architects for a planned Spring remodel of our home.
Eagle River Deck Builders Provider Name Locked
was very nice and let me know they only did the building part of the process, but stayed for an additional 30 minutes to speak with me about the process and give tips. He was extremely helpful and I appreciated his time. We are not yet at the process where we pick a builder but will definitely consider their company when we do.

I can not say enough good things about the quality of work done by
Eagle River Deck Builders Provider Name Locked
's company
Eagle River Deck Builders Provider Name Locked
. From initial bid to final acceptance of the finished work, it was a positive experience. His bid was significantly lower than the other two Angie’s List contractors we selected. The deck was designed by my wife and unusual in that it was diamond-shaped. She also wanted the boards, footprint, and stairs built to a specific design. Mr
Eagle River Deck Builders Provider Name Locked
said can-do and recommended that we upgrade the wood and we are really glad we listened to him. The final product was exactly what we wanted and hugely better than the old deck. The two men that worked on our deck,
Eagle River Deck Builders Provider Name Locked
and
Eagle River Deck Builders Provider Name Locked
, were a real pleasure to have work for us. They arrived on time and cleaned up their mess before they left each day. After demolishing the old deck, they began work on the new deck. They asked our preference on several things we hadn’t thought of, and several times recommended better solutions. We would use them again and have enthusiastically recommended them to our neighbors and friends. My advice is ‘listen to their recommendations, they know what they are doing’.
