"I was out of town on a weekday when my wife telephoned to inform me that there was no hot water in our home. It was a fairly new hot water heater, and I suspected that the pilot had simply blown out. She was not comfortable attempting to relight it, so I suggested she call a plumber. She picked Bonfe out of the Yellow Pages. The result: a Bonfe service person replaced the thermocouple?a $5 to $10 part at most?and charged her over $360 for a repair that could not have taken more than an hour to do. I called the company and was told, in effect, that that?s what it costs to do the job. I disagree. I have replaced a thermocouple in a gas water heater. If you ?t have to run to the hardware store, it takes about a half hour.
There are only two ways of doing business: A company either tries to maximize short-term profit, or it sees every business contact as an opportunity to make and keep a customer for the long term. A small job is often an audition for a larger one. While he was making over $300 per hour replacing our thermocouple, the technician might have taken time to observe that our furnace and air conditioner were over 35 years old and would soon be in need of replacement, a job worth thousands of dollars. When it came time to choose an HVAC contractor to do this job, Bonfe wasn?t even on my list of possibilities."

"Excellent transaction. was hired by a neighbor and I asked him if he would be interested in doing a water heater job and he advised he'd over later in the day to provide an estimate. He reviewed the current heater and we talked about replacing it with a similar tank model or tankless. He was clear on his experience installing both options and what I could expect with each; we decided to replace current heater with same 40 tank heater. also noted two things: the water heater and furnace were both in a rather small area with source of no fresh air. Second, the exhaust from the water heater entered my chimney into a separate entry than my furnace. recommended we use the entry from the furnace as it was lined and would reduce moisture in the chimney. I agreed to both suggestions.
On the day scheduled, arrived on time, reviewed the work and began. He placed runners on the carpet to prevent damage. He advised that the new water heater would be delivered by another person and that person arrived as scheduled with the new water heater and took the old in exchange; no interaction was needed on my part for this exchange as managed it all. Half way through the installation advised he needed to leave to run to the store as he damaged one of the incoming water valves; repaired this on his dime.
At the end of the day, reviewed the passive air vent he installed into the water heater/furnace area to introduce fresh air, the changes made to the exhaust area within the chimney, how to turn off the water and gas in an emergency, how to change the water temperature (and what temperature to use to strike a balance between cost and performance) and where I could find the instruction manual. left the work area cleaner than it was before he arrived.
Two days after the installation I had a question for so I left him a voice mail. He returned my call within the hour and answered my question thoroughly."

"We were extremely pleased with 's work. They promptly returned our call. The plumber arrived as scheduled. The work was performed quickly. The work area was left clean. The old water heater was removed. Thanks a bunch, !"

"They came about 8 AM and were done by 10:30 AM. Everything was very efficient. The person who installed the water heater was friendly and provided me with a lot of information not only about my water heater but my boiler as well. I did have to call them back for a small leak in one of the pipes which needed more solder but this was nothing major. They responded very well and I would certainly use them again."

"The experience did not start out well as I was told the plumber would be coming the first thing in the morning; 9:00 - 9:30 am depending upon traffic. He finally showed up around 11:45 am. The work performed was great. He removed the old water heater and brought the system up to code by installing a larger vent pipe and new gas valve. He was very courteous and did a decent job in maintaining a clean area, although there was a small pools of water left in the basement from the old unit and some dolly mud tracks left near the door."

"Everything went very well, from quotation to project completion. I had several companies out to give a quote. was one of 2 that I felt very comfortable with that they spent a bit of time to understand what needed to be done and gas lines and air ducts were confusing and hard to determine and therefore give an accurate quote. was also the best price, we had a couple quotes in the $8000-$11,000 range! The work was done in a professional, responsible manner according to our agreement. When the installation was complete, they brought to my attention that one of the water heaters had a small leak. In their tests, they determined it was the heater itself, and they would have to contact the manufacturer itself to get a replacement. Although I ended up having to call them about 5 days later to see when they would replace the defective unit, it was taken care of shortly after. The city inspector confirmed my feelings about the job saying '' always does good work.''"

"Tried to schedule service on Sunday for Monday through the answering service. Did not get a call back. But when I called again, first thing Monday, they were very responsive. Arrived within minutes of scheduled 1 p.m. appointment, finished work in a couple of hours. Plumber ( ?) was helpful, explained how he was setting temp deliberately low because of recent experience, but that I might want to adjust. Can't speak much to the price. I needed hot water ASAP and didn't do price comparisons. But from previous experience with and other outfits I suspect it's not out of line."

" was to arrive between 2 and 5 p.m. Arrived at 6:30 but did put in the water heater. Before coming, he called to say he was picking up a water heater at the shop and that the cost would be $1400+. I said OK since the water heater had been broken for several days (over a weekend) and I was leaving the next day on vacation. When he had me sign the contract, I asked why it was so expensive since I had another quote of around $800. He said others don't add in all the costs. After calling a week later to discuss the cost, I learned that the price was based on the quality of heater. I was never given choices at different price points. The person at said they'd have a supervisor call me but so far (two business days later), I haven't heard from anyone. I now own the Lexus of water heaters. On the plus side, was pleasant, humorous, and worked until 9:30 PM to get the job done."

"Plumber was on time, completed work on schedule and cleaned up. They were very polite, informative and efficient. They advised us on checking other gas appliances when gas to the heaters was shut off and were careful about safety. Accepted angie's list coupon graciously."
D
"Given that their bid was so far out of line I can only assume they weren't interested in the job and had decided to just take their $49 'estimate' fee. I wouldn't call the experience confidence inspiring."
