"I intentionally scheduled the first appointment of the day to avoid the potential for long delays. I printed the new patient intake forms from the online patient" portal and arrived on time with all necessary paperwork completed. I was greeted by a very pleasant woman at the front desk who took my insurance info and then quickly escorted me to an exam room to wait. And wait. And wait. There were no other patients in the waiting area and the entire office was oddly quiet so the reason for the delay was curious. After 15 minutes, I could hear the doctor in the hallway right outside the exam room laughing and chatting away in casual conversation with the woman at the front desk. I knew it wouldn't be long now. However, 10 minutes later, still no doctor. Concerned that I may have been inadvertently forgotten or overlooked (this has happened before in a busy medical office), I poked my head out of the door, waved, and asked about how much longer as I had already been waiting 25 minutes. It was at this time I saw Dr.
for the first time standing at the front desk writing and chatting, wearing
, flip flops, and a t-shirt. He quickly turned around, gave a look of annoyance, and stated "25 minutes,
?....Interesting." Confused by the odd response, I returned to the exam room and closed the door. Within a few minutes, Dr.
entered, sat down, and said "Do you have somewhere more important you need to be right now? Because you're free to go." By now I'm more confused and quickly pick up that he is angry. I asked "Are you upset with me?" He replied, "YES! Clearly you don't understand who I am and what you're getting from me. All the years of school, my expertise... I'm a specialist. The fact that you didn't have to wait months to get in to see me should mean something. I'm old school. This isn't a 'put in your order and expect your steak in 11 minutes' type of situation. If I have a patient who is dying and others have to wait while I take care of that patient, I don't care one bit that they have to wait. You see? So if you have a problem with that..." So now I'm really scratching my head. The office was not connected with a hospital. It was in a professional building with other medical and dental practices. His comfortable attire and casual hallway conversation gave no indication of his participation in an emergency medical crisis. So nobody was dying. I'm not entirely certain there were any other patients there. So why was he so outraged that I simply asked how much longer? It took all of 10 seconds into his rant that I realized that -- no matter how much pain I was feeling and how much hope I had put into finally finding a solution -- this would not be a healthy doctor / patient relationship. So I calmly responded, "If yours is not a philosophy of mutual respect, then this is not a good fit." He replied, "FINE!" and stormed out of the room. In a word, I was 'stunned'. You see, I have been a patient for many, many years. And I have experienced all types of medical professionals. Some good. Some bad. Some with wonderful communication skills. Some with horrible bedside manner. And I am also a healthcare professional. So I understand first hand the stress of coping in today's healthcare environment with the growing demands to see more patients, meet quality standards to improve patient outcomes, reimbursement challenges, the ACA, etc. Because I can relate to the reality of today's healthcare professionals, I am a very empathetic patient. Needless to say, I would not recommend Dr.
to anyone. But it has nothing to do with my wait. Delays happen. I accept that. It was his demeaning attitude that turned me away. You see, his inappropriate behavior wasn't a result of having a bad day or a medical emergency or even the stress of running his own medical practice. His behavior stems from his deeply held personal view of the doctor / patient relationship: patients are subordinates and do not question the physician. Ever. What an archaic perspective on modern medicine. I'll be fine. There are many, many wonderful physicians out there and I'm determined to find the right one to help me. But I worry for other patients in his care. With the move toward a more "patient-centric" health care system, being a patient is hard and is becoming more complex than ever. A global set of skills are necessary to: access health services, comprehend data and information, speak up and engage openly with healthcare providers, understand and recall spoken information, problem-solve, use technology, critically weigh options, and make decisions. Now more than ever, we need physicians to genuinely empathize with patients and become our partners in healthcare. While Dr.
may be a brilliant neurologist, his lack of mutual respect and empathy toward patients is his achilles heel.

"You must do something about the excessive waiting room times. I just don't have time to spend 45 minutes to an hour (or more) beyond my appointment time sitting" in the waiting room! This was not an isolated incident, either, as I've always had to deal with these kinds of waits in the various times I've come to your office over the past 15+ years. Add up the waiting room time, the 1/2 hour driving back and forth to the appointment, and actually seeing the doctor, and I have to budget 3 to 4 hours just to come to your office. I can't do it any more. It's like money out of my pocket--time off from work, etc.

Sounds like you should be pursuing a disability claim.  Also, you could speak to your previous doctor frankly about your concerns.
Have they made orthotics for your shoes that distribute your weight better?

Hi,

This is James W. with Member Care. Thanks for posting your question.

It looks like when you signed up online on 8/5/2014, that you accidentally joined our greater Portland chapter instead of our Salem/Corvallis chapter that your zip code falls under. I have transferred your subscription to that chapter, so you will now have access to the correct area.

I hope this information helps! Please let me know if I can assist further. You can respond to this thread or submit a new Answers post. You can also reach us at 1-866-783-2980. We're open weekdays from 8:00 am - 9:00 pm and Saturdays 8:00 am - 5:00 pm ET.

The surgery that Dr.
Saint Paul Hand Surgeons Provider Name Locked
performed was perfect. I have zero pain and complete range of motion. However, Dr.
Saint Paul Hand Surgeons Provider Name Locked
has a bit of a Jekyl and
Saint Paul Hand Surgeons Provider Name Locked
personality: on some visits, he is pleasant and attentive and on others, he is brusque and non-communicative. Given the large number of competent hand surgeons in this area, I would probably go elsewhere for additional surgery. I do want to emphasize, however, that he is an excellent surgeon, which is probably most people's major consideration.

Overall, I'd say I was lucky to receive top-notch treatment after breaking the fifth metacarpal of my right hand. I was referred to Dr.

Peck by my orthopedist at St.
Saint Paul Hand Surgeons Provider Name Locked
Sports Performance. I highly recommend Dr
Saint Paul Hand Surgeons Provider Name Locked
— she is knowledgeable, down-to-earth and did an excellent job with my surgery. I went in after it became clear my hand wasn't healing correctly after a sports injury. Dr
Saint Paul Hand Surgeons Provider Name Locked
recommended surgery and was able to schedule me that week. She implanted a plate to keep my poor little finger in line.
Post-surgery, I received therapy and ultrasound treatments (on my scar tissue) at the clinic upstairs. The physical therapy staff is pretty

Saint Paul Hand Surgeons Provider Name Locked
, who was the main therapist I saw and just super nice.
Overall, this was an excellent experience, considering my hand was broken, which is not an awesome situation to be in. The only slight negatives were an experience with a kind of surly x-

tech and being ambushed by the center's financial counsellor about billing one time I came in for follow-up with Dr
Saint Paul Hand Surgeons Provider Name Locked
. (Though I appreciate their willingness to let me go on a payment plan and their focus on customer service in this regard.) I'd say these people are true experts at what they do. I wouldn't go anywhere else in Indy for hand/shoulder issues, and I highly recommend Dr
Saint Paul Hand Surgeons Provider Name Locked
specifically. She did a great job with the surgery and I appreciated her demeanor, which radiated intelligence, friendliness and directness. She worked with my sports doc (Dr.

of St.

Dr.
Saint Paul Hand Surgeons Provider Name Locked
was very professional, straightforward and caring. He made me feel very comfortable with his diagrnosis and thoroughly discussed my options with me. There was minimal scaring just as he described and I have full use of my wrist. His staff was also very friendly and helpful. I am so thankful for everything that he did for me. He is a wonderful Doctor and I would highly recommend him to others.

I think they're pretty good. I'm not really crazy about the lady who just operated on my arm a month ago,

because my elbow is swollen and I saw her yesterday, she drained it, and put some shots in there and today it looks worse, and I'm still in a lot of pain. The doctor is

I'm only going to see Dr. Wolgin about my neck. My arm is still very painful. My elbow is still swollen. I don't know what to do.

I like the doctor, Dr
Saint Paul Hand Surgeons Provider Name Locked
. He was good. You could tell he knew his business. He was very easy to talk to and informative. He answered all my questions and didn't make you feel rushed. I was able to get in to see him in about two weeks of when I called, which I thought was pretty decent. The environment and staff was fine.

Dr
Saint Paul Hand Surgeons Provider Name Locked
was fine - used him before.|However accuracy of communication with staff was consistently incorrect.|I had discussed and agreed with Dr to have local anesthetic but all phone communication & instructions by surgery staff was for general anesthia - which requires fasting after midnight and no driving self home after surgery. These incorrect pre surgery instructions occurred numerous times over several days up to the checkin admission the day of surgery - even though I offered correction a couple of times. Since I had local anesthia - I was coherent throughout to ensure DR and I were in agreement.

Received an immediate appointment, and he diagnosed the problem basically just by listening to my description of the injury. Said he was not surprised that previous provider did not recognize it because he only does hands and doesn't see that type of injury more than about every 2 years. Required surgery, which was scheduled rapidly, and he was very open about the time in a cast, the steps to get use of the hand back, etc. Very pleased with entire experience.

I had a hand surgery a couple of years ago and the surgeon has since moved to Utah and I have talked to another surgeon as a follow-up. It's very specialized. She was taking over from the surgeon that I had the surgery done. She was very knowledgeable, very friendly, very concerned and she's being sure that I don't have pain that I didn't need to have. She was quick to solve it right there during the appointment and she assured me that I should call back when I have pain or need something. The staff seemed organized and efficient.
