, I decided to have him do a diagnostic check to see just how bad the problem would be to fix. Since the IBM worked fine except for the display, we talked about the possibility of just removing the display entirely so that I could easily use the chassis with an existing external monitor. We discussed the possible points of failure, from simplest (flex cable) to worst case (mother board issues), and decided to go no farther than looking into the flex cable. A couple of days later

called to let me know that it was indeed the flex cable that had failed, and to give me an estimate (parts and labor) to replace it. I authorized the repair, and on 6 May (about 1 week)

called to say it was fixed and ready to go. I picked it up on the 7th, and it is working perfectly."

"This was a trying experience from start to finish. Waited in a long line to drop off the computer. Work order said anticipated time of completion was 3 days, but the "agent" told me it would be seven. When I hadn't heard a word after 10 days, I tried to call. It was 3 more days before I could get anyone to answer the phone; after going through voicemail ...more hell several times I finally called the store customer service and had them walk over to the service desk and tell someone to pick up. Was told the hard drive had failed and would be replaced, but they were unable to recover any data. While on the phone, agent said he just thought of something else he could try and he'd call back within an hour. Didn't call back. Someone else called the next day to say my laptop was ready for pickup and no data had been recovered. I then had a techie friend look at it and he was able to restore ALL the data files (he said it worked intermittently). I think Geek Squad did not try very hard."

"I ordered a new computer from them. I was still uncertain how to modify it to serve as a repository for our digital media. I ordered with one large hard drive and one memory chip. I decided to use RAID features and went to get a second drive and decided on more memory. I asked the sales technician if the memory I was getting was the same as in the ...more system so that I might not run into compatibility issues. He said yes. He was wrong. I had to go back to exchange memory. I had decided to get a third drive so it wasn't so bad, but an extra trip across town is really kinda annoying. Sometimes they are really busy and though they have always been helpful, ask to see things for yourself and double check on certain facts - like memory sticks being the same."
