Pet door wall installation takes longer, looks better

"I'm looking for a company or contractor that would install pet doors. What kind of company should I be looking for, and what should I expect out of the job?" — Angie's List member Hector Sosa

Look for a handyman or carpenter, says Steve Cloninger, owner of Get It Done Inc., an A-rated home repair and maintenance company in St. Louis. "Basically, you're looking for someone who has installed [pet] doors before," he says.

To ensure they get the right product, homeowners should purchase the pet door themselves, Cloninger says. "The customer knows the size of the pet and can choose the type of door they want, along with considering the price differences," he says.

He estimates installing a pet door in an existing door takes one to two hours and costs about $70 to $140. Installing it in a wall could take slightly longer, though he advises customers it's a better alternative than in an existing door.

"This is primarily because some types of doors, such as six-panel doors, do not look good with a dog door installed," he says. "You are likely to have gaps around the door that won't give it a finished look."

Joe Powers, owner of highly rated St. Louis-based Powers Handyman Services, says a pet door can be a threat to home security in some cases.

"If the door is big enough for a large dog, it could be big enough for a small person to crawl through or to at least reach inside and unlock the door," Powers says.
