"Let me say up front that we are very pleased with the end result and many aspects of working with AKB, and we would work with them again. Some might consider anything" less than an 'A' an insult, but I still consider 'B' a good grade. I also acknowledge that with a full remodel like this involving multiple sub-contractors, the degree of difficulty is high. All that said, I felt there were enough hiccups that I could not give them the top grade. Improving these things could make a good company great. The first stage was working with the designer, starting with the initial consultation and estimate. This part went very smoothly. We talked to a few different vendors. Price quotes were roughly equivalent, but we went with AKB because they gave the best sense of being engaged in the specifics of our project, thinking through various options and challenges, etc. The designer was also good about vetting out some variables that would not become clear until further inspection/teardown and how they might impact the project, so that there were no surprises as to scope of work. Once we gave them our business, that level of engagement continued. We had a challenge to make the most out of a small bathroom while still expanding the shower. The designer did a good job working with me on her layout tool to play with different approaches until we settled on a solution that met our goals. This did entail moving plumbing (toilet was moving over a few inches, sink was moving from one wall to another), electrical, and the door (to make room for the vanity moving to a different wall), but the designer was clear on cost impact (and we had discussed this briefly in initial consultation), so again, no surprises there. We then proceeded to pick out cabinetry, tile, tile caps, fixtures, countertop, and paint from various vendors. This also went smoothly and we came up with choices that we were happy with and that came together well. The hiccups came into play during the actual execution of the project. Again, not too surprising in a project of this complexity, but enough to be an area for improvement. First, I had to ask multiple times to see an estimated schedule, which was eventually provided (owner was polite, apologized, explained that he had been out). Our next frustration was that it wasn't made clear to us from one day to the next if and when we should expect someone to show up. I understand that they are juggling multiple type of workers across multiple projects, which is a scheduling challenge, but I would at least expect them to be able to tell me at the end of each day who was showing up the next day so that my wife wouldn't just be stuck waiting and wondering all day. To their credit, once I complained about this, they rectified it -- someone started calling me each afternoon/evening to review progress and plan for the following day. Perhaps I should have said something sooner, but in my mind this should just be standard operating procedure and I shouldn't have to bring it up. There was also a little bit of confusion about the light fixture. This was the one thing we kept, but it was not compliant. It took me multiple queries to understand the exact compliance issue -- that it was not an
fixture. At one point, I had been told it was because we did not have a vacancy sensor, but that turned out to be entirely separate (and they did install a vacancy sensor as well). AKB suggested putting in a compliant fixture for inspection, then replacing with the original fixture, but I wanted to understand the exact compliance issue before playing that sort of game (and I have since put
bulbs in the fixture). We did settle on that plan, but it didn't seem like it was communicated to everyone -- when they came for the finish electrical, they asked me where the fixture was, and didn't seem to know the plan. We did eventually get it cleared up, but it took some calls and texts (including an amusing exchange where the AKB point of contact mistook me for his foreman, who has the same first name). We also had a minor issue at the very end where the shower door wasn't caulked all the way around on the inside, and it took a few days to get someone back out to fix that. The schedule was somewhat of a disappointment as well. Initially, I was told 3-5 weeks to complete, and the schedule I was given after the job started was for 4 weeks, IIRC (don't have it in front of me). AKB delayed the start of the job by a week, I was told in order to be able to line things up to give the best attention to my job. This gave me high hopes for a speedy completion, but it was not to be. If you count the final little piece of caulking, it took nearly 7 weeks (6 weeks if you don't count that). I didn't expect exact compliance to the schedule, of course, but it was still a bit much. However, as I've said, we are very pleased with our new bathroom. Quality of materials, work, and fixtures are all high and everything looks great, and that's what I'll appreciate for years to come. No issues on final inspection, either (a couple of issues on the initial, rough plumbing/electrical inspection were cleared up quickly). I would also like to make clear that, despite my issues with communication not always being clear, the personnel were consistently friendly and polite. I'm a bit of a stickler for clarity, information, and communication, and I'm sure I must have annoyed them at times, but they never reacted rudely, and I appreciate that. Also, there were no cost surprises. There were a couple of change orders early on, but they were things we had already discussed as possibilities at the outset (some things aren't clear until teardown), so they were not surprises.

"We got quotes from a lot of companies that came to our home. Baseline was not the cheapest, however they are the best, they were able to answer our questions, were" fast & efficient with starting the whole process until finished. They were knowledgeable, fast ,efficient, clean, professional, very creative regarding designs and material we chose for our home remodel. They gave us an honest and professional advice. Ohad, Baselines contractor, came to us with realistic ideas and prices. Always friendly. Something we truly appreciate from him was that at all times he was present to make sure his team was doing the best job. He didn't mind getting his hands dirty when he needed to. Reachable and always with a big smile! The company has top notch tiles and cabinets, designs and equipment to make your home look beautiful. We Highly recommend Ohad and Baseline and will be working with them again soon.

Angie's Answers

?

This part of Don's answer follows my thoughts exactly:

"You want to deal with a professional person that is selling you a bath that was not working as a cashier a few months ago."

Do you go to the gracery store and ask for someone to cook your steak?  Of course not.  So why would you go to a building supply store and ask for someone to remodel your bathroom?  Rarely will you see a legitimate contractor take jobs from a retailer.  Why?  Because they don't pay much.  Speed is the most important thing to them, along with getting it done cheap so they can maximize profit.  About 10 years ago I worked on a few contracted structures (sheds, garages, etc.) from Home Depot.  They contracted to another company who then contracted people to build them.  At that time they paid a flat $250 for a contractor to pick up the supplies, build the structure on site, paint it, and use their own tools.  By the time the cost of a helper, fuel, tools, etc. was factored in there was nothing left for the contractor.  Anyway, the point I'm making is that the guy who will eventually show up to do the work will be so far down the line that everyone else has already taken the profits (Home Depot, ReBath, possibly someone else, and finally the guy working) that he probably isn't going to care what kind of job he does for you, quality or not.  He likely won't have much experience due to a high turnover rate and any experience he does have will probably be limited to his teachings at that job.  He probably can't answer any building code questions or identify other hazards once things are taken apart and he certainly won't do anything he doesn't have to while it is apart.

Another problem I've heard of repeatedly is that if (when) there is a problem there is always someone else you need to speak to.  You might have to talk to 4 or 5 different people before you can even get to someone that can address the problem.  Now multiply that due to having (at least) two separate companies involoved.  "You need to call ReBath."  "No, you need to call Home Depot."

You hire a general contractor for a reason.  We learn, understand, and keep up on building codes.  We are the one point of contact for all questions and issues on a project.  There is no manager in some other store, state, etc. to call.  You contract a GC and deal directly with that GC, or a site supervisor in some cases.  There isn't a huge chain of command to get through to reach the main decision maker for the business.  In a bathroom remodel you need someone who can do the plumbing, repair and/or move any electrical, install tile/flooring, drywall and paint, trim carpentry, and someone to coordinate all of that.  Sometimes you can find a qualified contractor to do all of those things and sometimes he will sub-contract out certain components (especially due to licensing laws) but you will always have that one definitive person to go to for any questions or issues.  A salesman in a store doesn't visit your home throughout the project to check on the status.  Even if he did, he likely wouldn't now what he is looking at.  The same goes for a retail manager.

Hire someone who specializes in taking care of your home.  Hire based on reputation & knowledge/experience.  You are right that not every customer can be happy so an occassional bad review can be found on just about any business.  Read the reviews, not the grades (they are always biased).  Look to see if the contractor attempted to rectify the problem, not ignore it.  Lastly, unless you want cheap, sloppy work and a whole heap of other troubles, don't hire based on a low price.

?
Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
?
What I always ask my customers regarding this question when remodeling bathrooms is how good they will be about maintaining and cleaning the new bathroom, especially when the old bathroom is obviously neglected.  If you are one of those people who wipes the glass down after a shower and cleans your bathroom every week or two you really don't need to spend the extra money.  If you are at the other end of the spectrum and clean it when it finally bothers you enough it may not be a bad investment.  I've had customer tell me they can tell a difference compared to their old glass without it and others say it made no difference at all.

Your basic rights and protections under law are probably outlined by your state and city's laws. In most states, the easiest way to look up your basic rights and privelges as a consumer would be to visit your state's attorney general website - you can usually find lots of great tips to protect yourself as a consumer there, too. Here's the National Association of Attorneys General's national listing, which includes a link to each state's attorney general website: http://www.naag.org/current-attorneys-general.php

Beyond those basic rights under the law, your expectations of a contractor during, on and after the completion of a job should be explicitly outlined in the estimate and contract. Although it can be a pain in the butt, ALWAYS read the estimate and/or contract before sign it! I cannot stress this enough - frequently the cause of someone's negative experiences with a contractor can be traced back to too few details in the contract.

We've covered contracts, and what you should expect to see in them, here: http://www.angieslist.com/contractor/signing-a-contract.htm

Good luck!

I phoned
San Jose Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and she scheduled an appointment within a couple of days. She listened to my thoughts on the project and also offered excellent suggestions. She also got the estimate to me within 10 days. I really liked the fact that AKB has connections with tile, granite and cabinet providers because it made my decisions so much easier. They started December first and expected the job to take about 6 weeks. I was really impressed with the fact that they always showed up at 8 AM and were ready to work. They have assembled a fine crew of craftsmen and I was really pleased with all of the results. I highly recommend them and will choose them for my next project.

I would call back

and his brother
San Jose Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
are both hands-on in the general contracting and they both over-see all the remodeling work done to my property. I have often asked for their opinion with ideas of certain layout, and both of brothers were very good in their feed-back. The remodeling estimate includes tear down, reconstruction of assign/specified areas, framing, labor cost of upgrade to bathroom/kitchen/flooring. Materials like kitchen cabinets, tiles, toilets and flooring are provided by me.
I highly recommend

and his brother,

to any bids you may have in your property. They are reasonable in their costs and their work quality is excellent. Give them a phone call and get them over to give you an estimate of the work and ask them to outline what is part of the price estimate. At least, that is how I approached the remodeling project before I awarded them the job.

We needed to remodel 2 bathrooms in our home. The master-bath included removal of a bathtub, enlarging the shower and tiling, new flooring, toilet and new granite counter tops, glass door. The hall bath included replacing tub, toilet and tiling above tub, new tile flooring and counter top. They did a great job and kept us in the loop all the time. The crew they used were great and clean. Very trustworthy. Excellent at keeping the dust controlled.

One month ago this contractor was supposed to finish drywall in my home and didn't complete it. They only completed about 75-80% of the job. He said that the second wall repair wasn't specified in the contract We had holes in 2 different walls and they repaired the 1st wall, but they said the 2nd wall wasn't outlined in contract. I asked to speak with owner, but the office has not returned any phone calls. The contract stated it was $285 for 2 areas of drywall repair. We, also, had an island built and installed but the

San Jose Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
did a great job of helping us pick out all of the required elements and gently guiding us away from things that wouldn't work as well as better options.
We had a few hiccups along the way - mostly because you don't know what's behind a wall until the wall comes down. We ended up needing a new patio, which was unexpected and set us back in terms of timing. (Apparently it's a good practice to make sure that your patio is lower than your house so water doesn't drain into the house.. someone should have told the original builder that!) The last couple of weeks of the project took longer than expected and there were some communication issues, but
San Jose Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and Johan made sure that at the end of the day, everything was right, which is really all anyone can ask for.
we've lived in the kitchen for about a year and a half now and are still very pleased with how wonderfully it came out. So pleased, that we're currently having them redo our master bath, living room, and floors throughout the house. We really can't say enough wonderful things about

- while the construction on the finished product of the kitchen is good, she's the reason the design came together so cohesively and we get so many compliments on it.

did an amazing job. He was onsite during the entire project, as he does much of the work himself. His subcontractors (tile, texturing, windows) were equally excellent. The whole project went smoothly. It took a couple of weeks longer than planned, but that was due to a delay on the window delivery.
Also, when the code "inspector" came in from the city, we passed with flying colors - there was not even a question on any of the work, which involved construction, plumbing, electrical and HVAC. The inspector actually praised the quality of

The other thing I like about
San Jose Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
is that he is a great "handyman." I have called him several times with small problems (leaking pipes, flickering light fixtures - I live in an old house - roof leaks) and he is generally here to help me out within 24 hours. If he can't fix it (he usually can) he knows someone who can do it.
