"Johan and his team did a fantastic job, from the cabinet install, to the tile and electrical and plumbing, every thing was top quality. Johan was always available" if we had any questions or issues, and I couldn't be more pleased. The job was done in the time frame he told us, no delays, and all of the sub contractors were respectful of our home and did an incredible job. He was very hands on and made sure that we were completely satisfied. I have recommended AKB to any of my friends who are in the
for a remodel. We are currently working with AKB to do our bath remodel.

"Tile is great. Painting is unfinished in my opinion. Painted ceiling (that I did not want painted) and left areas unpainted around grates in ceiling. Overall job" is good. Finishing leaves a lot to be desired.

Angie's Answers

?

This part of Don's answer follows my thoughts exactly:

"You want to deal with a professional person that is selling you a bath that was not working as a cashier a few months ago."

Do you go to the gracery store and ask for someone to cook your steak?  Of course not.  So why would you go to a building supply store and ask for someone to remodel your bathroom?  Rarely will you see a legitimate contractor take jobs from a retailer.  Why?  Because they don't pay much.  Speed is the most important thing to them, along with getting it done cheap so they can maximize profit.  About 10 years ago I worked on a few contracted structures (sheds, garages, etc.) from Home Depot.  They contracted to another company who then contracted people to build them.  At that time they paid a flat $250 for a contractor to pick up the supplies, build the structure on site, paint it, and use their own tools.  By the time the cost of a helper, fuel, tools, etc. was factored in there was nothing left for the contractor.  Anyway, the point I'm making is that the guy who will eventually show up to do the work will be so far down the line that everyone else has already taken the profits (Home Depot, ReBath, possibly someone else, and finally the guy working) that he probably isn't going to care what kind of job he does for you, quality or not.  He likely won't have much experience due to a high turnover rate and any experience he does have will probably be limited to his teachings at that job.  He probably can't answer any building code questions or identify other hazards once things are taken apart and he certainly won't do anything he doesn't have to while it is apart.

Another problem I've heard of repeatedly is that if (when) there is a problem there is always someone else you need to speak to.  You might have to talk to 4 or 5 different people before you can even get to someone that can address the problem.  Now multiply that due to having (at least) two separate companies involoved.  "You need to call ReBath."  "No, you need to call Home Depot."

You hire a general contractor for a reason.  We learn, understand, and keep up on building codes.  We are the one point of contact for all questions and issues on a project.  There is no manager in some other store, state, etc. to call.  You contract a GC and deal directly with that GC, or a site supervisor in some cases.  There isn't a huge chain of command to get through to reach the main decision maker for the business.  In a bathroom remodel you need someone who can do the plumbing, repair and/or move any electrical, install tile/flooring, drywall and paint, trim carpentry, and someone to coordinate all of that.  Sometimes you can find a qualified contractor to do all of those things and sometimes he will sub-contract out certain components (especially due to licensing laws) but you will always have that one definitive person to go to for any questions or issues.  A salesman in a store doesn't visit your home throughout the project to check on the status.  Even if he did, he likely wouldn't now what he is looking at.  The same goes for a retail manager.

Hire someone who specializes in taking care of your home.  Hire based on reputation & knowledge/experience.  You are right that not every customer can be happy so an occassional bad review can be found on just about any business.  Read the reviews, not the grades (they are always biased).  Look to see if the contractor attempted to rectify the problem, not ignore it.  Lastly, unless you want cheap, sloppy work and a whole heap of other troubles, don't hire based on a low price.

Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
?
What I always ask my customers regarding this question when remodeling bathrooms is how good they will be about maintaining and cleaning the new bathroom, especially when the old bathroom is obviously neglected.  If you are one of those people who wipes the glass down after a shower and cleans your bathroom every week or two you really don't need to spend the extra money.  If you are at the other end of the spectrum and clean it when it finally bothers you enough it may not be a bad investment.  I've had customer tell me they can tell a difference compared to their old glass without it and others say it made no difference at all.

Your basic rights and protections under law are probably outlined by your state and city's laws. In most states, the easiest way to look up your basic rights and privelges as a consumer would be to visit your state's attorney general website - you can usually find lots of great tips to protect yourself as a consumer there, too. Here's the National Association of Attorneys General's national listing, which includes a link to each state's attorney general website: http://www.naag.org/current-attorneys-general.php

Beyond those basic rights under the law, your expectations of a contractor during, on and after the completion of a job should be explicitly outlined in the estimate and contract. Although it can be a pain in the butt, ALWAYS read the estimate and/or contract before sign it! I cannot stress this enough - frequently the cause of someone's negative experiences with a contractor can be traced back to too few details in the contract.

We've covered contracts, and what you should expect to see in them, here: http://www.angieslist.com/contractor/signing-a-contract.htm

Good luck!

I hired AKB for a very big job: the entire remodel of an historic 2600 sf two-story house. The job included engineering and design to allow expansion of the kitchen and suppression of a non-functional hallway, major foundation work, the complete replumbing and rewiring of the house, the gutting and remodeling of the kitchen and 3.5 bathrooms, installation of recessed lighting everywhere, construction of new closet space, new ducts, new water heater, installation of hardwood floors, restoration of an old fir staircase and old fir floors, repairs and replacement of non-functional door and window hardware, painting everywhere, removal of an obsolete heating system from the roof, earthwork to improve drainage, and many other things. A considerable fraction of the work represented more a restoration job than remodeling. I would say AKB did everything but the kitchen sink, except they did that too !
The final product was a wonderful house that will last yet another 100 years and that is more "historic" than when we started, because they were able to replicate historic features such as the wainscoting, baseboard trim, and window frames, transferring the designs from the oldest part of the house to the newer parts to give the appearance that all had all been constructed in the same era. The AKB workers showed great craftsmanship and pride in this restoration work and the quality was top notch.
AKB provided a lot of good design ideas, and they readily accepted and implemented the ideas I had myself. AKB stood out compared to other contractors I have worked with by listening to me and doing what I wanted without wrangling.
There were many unexpected issues that came up, as is normal for a remodel job, In addition, my wife and I changed our choices a number of times, and added new requests as the project progressed and we could better visualize the outcomes. The project was complicated by the fact I was often away on business during the remodeling time. Despite the complexity and my frequent absence from the work site, there was remarkably little miscommunication. The owner is a "hands-on" guy with great integrity, and I highly recommend him.

If I could give 10 stars, I would. We are delighted with ADH and their crew and the excellent work they provided. We had a large remodel in our kitchen that extended to our living room. Included removing a 16' load-bearing wall, reinforcing the ceiling beam, upgrading electrical panel, and putting in brand new flooring, kitchen layout, electrical, gas line, lights, plumbing, appliances, tiles, paint. Our house has increased in value thanks to ADH's excellent work. Every single person who has visited our home has appreciated the detail and beautiful new kitchen and living room we have.
The crew, Vasyl and team, were dedicated, knowledgeable, thorough, sincere, respectful, and most of all, very hardworking. The project took 7 weeks whereas most other contractors said 12-14 weeks. Price was mid-range for excellent work - not the lowest, but not highest either. No subcontractors were used, which was a major selling point for us. We didn't want to have unknown strangers walking in and out of our house every week. Countertop fabrication was top-notch! Every step of the way, our main sales guy,
San Jose Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
Gotishan, was available to answer questions, negotiate prices, or do some more research on things that we liked. The crew were always helpful in giving advice on what would or would not work in their experience. Their advice was invaluable and saved us many hours of headache in research. Hats off to the project coordinator and manager,
San Jose Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
, who handled communication, payments, and gave us reassurances constantly.
I have referred ADH,

Strong came out to measure, and sent us the price estimate shortly thereafter. In addition to the work we wanted done, he pointed our that he could convert two false drawers under our cooktop to real drawers, which we agreed to add. There was one problem area, a corner cabinet -- we went into his shop to discuss solutions, selected one, and added that to the scope.
He warned us at first meeting that he had about a 12 week backlog, but would keep us posted on when he actually began constructing for our kitchen, and promised it could all be installed in a day. The actual wait was about 9 weeks; he called a week in advance to schedule the actual installation, which was complete in a day as promised.

Since this was such a large investment for us, we had the project quoted by four highly-rated general contractors (including Enzo.) Our first impression of Enzo was that he was very knowledgeable, had great ideas to improve the optimization of our kitchen and family room layout that we never thought of. Enzo was the not cheapest, but he was also not the most expensive (by far). In the end we choose Enzo because of his knowledge and the fact that his quote presented the *best value*.
Now that this project is over, we are extremely thrilled with the results. Enzo and his crew were always prompt and courteous during the remodel and we never felt hesitant leaving our home in their care. More importantly they never cut corners, in fact during demo they found some less-than-ideal work by our home's builders (
San Jose Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
) and fixed it.
Note: You really know somebody is trustworthy and honest when they stand by their work *after* they have all your money; and that is exactly what Enzo did. We had a very small issue in our kitchen where two electrical outlets were not working properly. I called Enzo and within two days he had his Electrician down at my house to fix the issue (only took 30 mins.) Making this issue, after the fact, a priority is something you want in a contractor but rarely see.
I would whole-heatedly recommend Enzo for any remodel you may be considering.

Let me first start by saying during the remodeling, the Leading Renovation crew was prompt and considerate. They cleaned up after each day. The bathroom looked great after they completed the work in 2 working days. But the difficulty arose when it came to the final city inspection.
Leading Renovation stated that there is a clause in the contract that the customer has to schedule the final inspection with the city and Leading Renovation will not be present. I asked what if something comes up. I was told that it was a basic remodel and the final inspection would take 30 seconds. Well, that was not the case. 30 minutes went by and the final inspection failed for electrical and plumbing.
Made 6 calls to inform Leading Renovation that the final inspection failed and kept asking when it would be resolved. I patiently waited between calls. They said they would return calls, But the majority of calls were not returned. Up to 2 weeks passed without any return call. Leading Renovation said they were too busy doing other projects and when they have time during a job in the area that they will get back to me. After multiple calls to Leading Renovation, they finally contacted the city plumbing supervisor to resolve the issue.

The main problem I had was that Leading Renovation was not returning most of my calls to resolve the final inspection failure and then finding out that they were too busy to resolve the issue sooner because their priority was working on new projects.
It took 64 days from the start of the project to finally passing the 2nd final inspection.

--not on Angie's List--uh, oh. Our standard procedure is to scour Angie's list in a category and select what we see as the three best to ask for estimates. This time we took two from the List and
San Jose Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
from a vendor recommendation. As a result of our interaction with the three, we chose
San Jose Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
based upon his proposal and our perception of the person, the latter being the more important. A big factor is that although he is a general contractor, his background is in tile. What superlatives can we use after seeing the finished work that
San Jose Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
did for us? None. Because that would not be
San Jose Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
. So if we went "gaga" in this review, it would sound false. With
San Jose Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
, what you see is what you get. He will tell you without hesitation what he thinks would work and look best when asked, without any pressure for you to change to his way of thinking. He guides you to making the best choices. As a result, our bathroom is really beautiful, with everything done even better than we had planned originally. He and his helper,
San Jose Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
