" showed on time and he is very friendly. He spent a lot of time explaining what he was going to do and what materials he was going to use." His price is reasonable too. Overall it is a good experience and I strongly recommend him to anyone who is seeking a contractor to repair chimney.

-Sandra L.

"I found this service on your listings. I read to reviews and called. The office person was polite and professional. We were able to set up a work date right away." Two men arrived on time and did the work fast and were very neat. After cleaning up gave me a report on what other work needed to be done. That was on 11/16/11. When I decided to do the additonal work I called the office again. The offer person and the service people got me a date right away. Again they arrived ready to work. and were excellent. They replaced the back of the fireplace, and replaced the chimney. They showed me what they were doing every step of the way. was very helpful. Both men were excellent workers and because of the treatment and the service I recived from them and this company I will use them again and recommend them to others. I also like Angie's List , I will continual to use it to look for reliable people to do work for me.

Angie's Answers

Most all professional chimney sweeps now utilize the National Fire Protection  211 Standard for chimneys, fireplaces , Vents and solid fuel-burning appliances for chimney inspections, which determines when and whether he has to access the roof.

There are 3 levels of inspection  The most commonly performed are Level 1 and level 2  are listed:

Level 1            Done as Annual Inspection

                      Routine cleaning of the flue

Direct replacement of a similar appliance

Level 1 inspection is recommended for a chimney under continued service under the same conditions with the continued use of the same appliance.

IN A Level 1 inspection, your chimney service tech should examine the *READILY ACCESSIBLE portions of the appliance and the chimney connection. HE will be looking for basic Soundness of the chimney structure and flue as well as the basic appliance installations and connections. HE will also Verify that  the chimney is free of obstruction and combustible deposits.

* Readily accessible Means that no special equipment is required to gain such access, ie.Ladder

LEVEL 2            Upon sale or transfer of a property

After an operating malfunction or an external event is likely to have caused damage to the chimney

Addition or removal of one or more connected appliances, or the replacement of an appliance withone of a different type, a different input rting or a different efficiency.

Prior to relining or replacement of the flue lining

Level 2 insp. are required when any changes are made to the system. Changes can include a change of Fuel Type, changes in shape or material in the flue,Replacement or addition of an appliance of a disimilar type, input rating or efficiency. Building fires, chimney fire or other seismic events as well as weather events or obvious construction defects would be indicators that a level 2 is warranted.

Level 2 includes everything in a level 1 PLUS the *Accessible portions of the chimney exterior and interior including attic, crawl spaces and basements. it addresses proper clearances from combustible in accessible locations. There are no speciality tools required to open or access doors, panels, or coverings during a level 2 insp.  The level 2  insp should also include the visual inspection by video scanning equipment or by other means in order to examine the internaql surfaces and joints of all the flue liners inside the chimney structure. No removal or demolition or any permrnantely attached portions of the chimney or building structure or finish shall be required in a level 2 insp.

*ACCESSIBLE means if you can get to it with special equipment do it but you dont have to take apart anything for said access. Use of ladders and cameras just no demolition.

***THE REAL ANSWER to this question lies with the accessibility of the top of the chimney and roof type.  Most professional sweeps want to examine up close the top of the chimney for cracked masonry crowns , which is very common, Flashing issues, top view down flue, and for prefab chimneys to insp the condition of the Chase cover and cap.

Note that the use of a special tool (ladder) to gain access to the chimney is under a level 2 inspection, which can be additional costs since it is a much more thorough inspection.

It is possible to sweep and do a level 1 insp. without accessing the roof.

Also most professional sweeps have equipment that allows us to sweep the chimney with a rotary system that is operated from inside at the fireplace opening and achieve a much better cleaning than pushing brushes down from the top and without getting on the roof. We also video scan the flue from the hearth so the homeowner can be a part of that inspection or "chimney-oscopy". They see the live action of the top of the chimney and conditions that exist inside their system so when they get their report they know they are not some stock pics that could be used to sell repairs but the actual pics of the conditions they viewed in their system. And we do not have to access the roof.

If the chimney access requires multiple ladders or is a "brush with death", there could be extra cost, and the sweep would make an onsite decision regarding the ability to safely reach the top of the chimney or have to use a lesser option of binoculars or rely on experience to determine whats going on up top based on visible symptoms,  if access is too dangerous or not possible.

So don't discount a sweeps knowledge or ability on whether he gets on the roof or not. Check him out on referral sites , company web site, credentials, training and experience. Get referals and check on liability insurance and you should be able to find a sweep that can meet your need. If you are in North Carolina check us out at ClassicChimney.com. Chimney Repair reviews in San Francisco

After buying our house, we finally got around to getting the fireplace in order. The house was built in 1929 and the fireplace had seen some use. I called and made an appointment. The worker showed up early, although he called to ensure this was okay. He cleaned the chimney and found that the damper had been corroded to the ...More point of being useless. He recommended that I get it replaced, buy informed me that this was not necessary. The gentleman then took measurements and we scheduled a time for him to come install the damper after fabrication. Once again, the worker showed up on time, was very polite and professional and installed the damper without issue. One side note: I accidentally overpaid for the service because on the invoice a 5 looked like a 9. However, they called me later in the afternoon and said they were mailing a check for the difference right away. Very honest.
- Patty I.

The job went very well. They did the roof in about a day and a half! To do this they worked very hard and at various times had 5-11 men on the roof. They were polite, friendly enough, and we were pleased. Of course since the roof was done so recently, and no rain has come yet, we can not say if it works perfectly or not. But it looks good. And, they ...More give an excellent warranty. We got quotes from a couple of other roofing companies. One was a more expensive but would have taken more time to do the project. The other thought we could pay more and gave us a very expensive price. We are glad we chose .
- Jordan H.

Everything went as expected - which for home repairs is unusual. I called for an estimate and after a brief discussion with Bill of what could possibly be the issue, he decided he should come by and check it out before providing a quote. We scheduled an appointment and he arrived on time. This would be my 2nd quote from a chimney ...More repair company. He explained what was needed to get the chimney to a safe working condition. At first I was alarmed because his quote did not include a new liner. This made his quote much cheaper than the previous company I contacted. Then he explained, in detail, why he believed I do not need a new liner. He left and I quickly began researching whether or not a new liner was required for my particular usage. As it turns out, it's not. Some repairs to the mortar joints was all that was required and some other minor work mentioned above. I booked an appointment for the repairs with Bill. He and his assistant arrived on time. They were both extremely professional, explained all the work that would take place and cleaned up nicely when the job was complete. Bill also suggested that we purchase a smoke guard to make the fire more efficient and prevent smoke building in the house. We decided to wait and try it out a few times first but I expect he'll be back out to make this addition. He definitely knows what he's talking about when it comes to chimneys. Finally, Bill also pointed out some additional repair work that was required on our roof - which he didn't have to do. It involved a custom made stainless steal plate that should have been replaced years ago. He said that it is most likely the original plate (nearly 80 years old) and should be fixed right away. It probably wasn't replaced earlier because it's custom work and therefore, very expensive. Although this is not work that he performs, he explained what the cost should be when we call out for quotes and also explained what needed to be done if we wanted to repair it ourselves. He even gave us some sealant tape to secure it until we get it fixed. I would definitely recommend him to my friends and family.
- Penny M.

Outstanding performance. A deteriorating brick chimney, appx 4 X 2 feet in size and appx 4 feet high, located 40-50 feet from the ground, on the steeply-pitched roof located inside the exterior wall of a house, needed to be removed, and a new flue installed. Some of the other roofers I had contacted wanted to have scaffolding ...More erected (at my expense) which would have involved placing a scaffold in my neighbors' yard. used a "roof scaffold," which significantly reduced the overall cost of the job. The 5-man crew arrived precisely on time. The installation of the new flue was performed by my contractor after the bricks were removed but before the re-roofing could take place. As my contractor was installing the new flue, the crew could have simply sat by and watched, however they assisted the contractor without having been asked. The old bricks were taken down in buckets rather than being thrown off the roof. paid particular attention to avoiding any disturbance to my neighbors. Upon completion of the job, site was IMMACULATE. You could literally not tell that anything had taken place. The tenant who maintains my yard commented similarly. asked, on multiple occasions if I was happy with how the work was going, and he wanted to make sure I was satisfied upon completion. I will use for any future roofing jobs.
- Thomas S.

Once we asked to do the job, they put us on the schedule and within a week had us up and running. They also ran into a problem they couldn't fix without doing more work. They were clear about the problem and gave us our options. They worked fast without creating a mess.
- Adam S.

I was a little concerned at first that their crew was so available in early fall to do a repair. The sales representative, , communicated very clearly. He gave us a written estimate on the spot, then visited again to measure (again) the chimneys. He was on time for each and every meeting. We received a ...More contract which clearly stated the cost and work to be done. The work was done in half a day, not the two days they allowed, which was great. Their crew cleaned up after themselves and were careful not to traipse through our house at random. We received an invoice afterwards, which was even divided between us and our neighbors for whom part of the work was done. In short all of our needs and expectations were met!
- David S.

The original estimates was $5000. and 2 skylights for $1100 = $6100. The old roof was laid 9 years ago and after 5 years the roof started to leak and I try to repair it myself with no favorable result. I had 3 estimates using roofing companies from Angle's List. I chose Co. All 3 companies were good, but I found ...More from Rescue very courteous, friendly and $750 less on the estimates. The roof that Rescue replaced was a poorly done and as the construction began, problems arose with wet old insulation, a bad seal around the drain, the roofing material in the valley was not high enough to prevent leaking and the rain runoff on the south side of the roof causing the leaking around the drain. showed me the problems and offered different ways and the extra cost to correct the problem. I decided to have correct the problems and that added on a $775 to my bill. I thought the $775 was fair, seeing the problems first hand help me to decided what has to be done.

The leak was at the bottom of the chimney, so roofers could never fix it. We have not had any really heavy rain yet, but it has not leaked since the work was done. However, it is guaranteed and they will have to fix it again at no cost if it leaks. I think they did a good job when they came though and I was pleased with the service.
