First, call your insurance company and tell them you do not want any proceeds paid to the contractor under your policy as you are not going with them.  This way they can not collect money on your behalf.  Insurance will typically have you sign a form for release of funds anyway but this is a good extra step to make sure your signature isn't forged.  Second, call the contractor and tell them you will not be needing their services afterall.  Did your husband pay a deposit?  If so it may be non-refundable.  Then follow up with a certified letter. 


An email as well doesn't hurt but some states don't yet recognize email as a form of communication for legally binding documentation.  This may have changed and I'm sure more states do recognize them as I haven't followed that topic elsewhere as much as I used to.  The contractor's office should be local.  A sure fire way to ensure they got the message is to deliver the letter to the office of the contractor and have someone at the office sign a duplicate stating it has been recieved and read.  There's no arguing whether they received it or not by doing that.


Hopefully you've learned your lesson about high pressure sales techniques and storm chasers looking for a quick buck.  Some people find out a much harder way.  While these guys may be legitimate you should always do your homework on a contractor before signing the contract.  Unless you have water running out of the house and the work has to be done on the spot it's not so much of an emergency that it can't wait until the next day.

Consider going to library an reading Consumer Reports rating on home insurance companies in your area.  For affordabilty elect the highest deductable you can stomach.  This will lower your premioum, I went thru Costco, they and Sam's Club can be a valuable resource for home and car insurance. Shop on line with your needs to save money.  Unless you have major assets forget large policy. For your gutter and roofing needs see my blog.

I called the SERVICE MASTER. they responded quickly but did tell me that they are not plumber and do not fix anything. they wil tell me what the problem was. I already knew the problem. water leaked from upstairs to downstairs. SERVICE MASTER measured the moisture content of the ceiling. why? i knew it was wet. they took a lot pictures. I told them they don't need to do that beacuse i was paying out of pocket since my insurance deductble was $1000. i hired aq plumber. he fixed the problem in 30 minutes by replacing the wax ring of the upstairs toilt for $150. SERVICE MASTER hooked up a giant de-humidifier to the ceiling and came back every day for 10 minutes to inspect if the tape was in place. after 4 days, i told they they are no longer needed. one month later, bill came for $780. WHAT??? if it was a insurance claim, i am certain that5 the

My house flooded and ESN restoration was contracted by the insurance company to secure my home and my contents. We didn't realize that ESN was the insurance company's one stop shop. ESN also wrote the estimate for repairs. Now here's where it gets interesting, ESN wrote an estimate of repairs for $18,000.00, grossly underestimated to save the insurance company money. My insurance agent felt that ESN Restoration had done an accurate estimate for repairs and if I had any problems I needed to contact them (ESN Restoration) to correct or address any concerns that I may have. ..They delt with everything from start to finish. In the end the insurance came through and corrected a wrong. It all started with an inexperienced person from ESN Restoration writing a bad estimate. Beaware that as a consumer you have the right to chose your own restoration company. Hopefully not the one mentioned in this report. I'm still trying to get ESN Restoration to take responsibility for damages they caused to several of my item not being packed-out/in correctly. ie. like my Grandfather Clock that they broke when they moved it, instead of hiring a company to move it like other company's would have done.

I get a different person and they follow a procedure or a script, they do not listen or respond to questions until they have completed their predetermined actions. They do not answer questions and they threaten to hang up on me if I insist on an answer without being forced to wait for them to go through whatever process they feel is more important than my questions. I have never, in 55 years, had such a poor experience with a service company. They might treat the people who are insured by them better but they will never get any of my money to be able to confirm that. Do not do business with this company.
