"LB Powers said 1/2 hour minimum charge for a repair estimate on a 30+ year old forced air furnace. I told them the age on the phone. Their guy was here less than 5 minutes, took a look and said it "could" be repaired but he suggested I buy a new one. I was sent a bill for 3/4 of an hour and when I called was told they charge for travel time. This had not been disclosed in advance. To their credit, they told me to only pay half hour when I called to complain about it. It winds up they don't even work on forced air furnaces! Their repair man was a good guy and professional. He was only here a few minutes and I honestly did not think I was being charged at all because he only walked in, looked at the outside of the furnace, told me to get a new one and left. Had the bill just come for half hour I would have shrugged this off, but when it came for 3/4 of an our it was flat our insulting. Especially considering no estimate was given, they do not even work on forced air furnaces and their office is only 10 minutes away. I have since found other local vendors in the industry, like ASI and
San Diego HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
and Sons who offer free estimates.

Prepare for fire season in San Diego

Tips on how to keep your home from falling victim to fall fires

How much does it cost to install a new furnace?

Two warranties govern furnace installs. The first is the manufacturer's warranty, which comes with the furnace and protects against defects in the furnace itself. A contractor's warranty covers the labor involved to make repairs if the furnace doesn't work properly. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Wayne L. of St. Louis)

Are you thinking about installing a new furnace? The following price considerations can help you determine the best furnace for your home, and save money too.

What is a fair price for R-22?

By 2015, there will be a 90 percent reduction in the production of R-22. By 2020, it will no longer be produced at all. Because production is limited, costs to charge existing units that are leaking R-22 refrigerant have gone up and are only expected to rise. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member John R. of Lake Mary, Fla.)

Dear Angie: My air conditioning contractor just charged me $100 per pound for R-22 refrigerant. This is a lot more than I paid four years ago. Is this a fair price these days?

Which furnace filters provide the best indoor air quality?

Replacing the air filter will improve air quality and extend the life of a furnace.

Be sure to check the minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating when evaluating air filters. You'll also want to learn about the types of filters and what products improve your home’s indoor air quality.

"He was friendly, professional, thorough.  We feel we got honest feedback (as opposed to some other services from another company).  We also bought a carbon monoxide filter that is far better quality than what is found in most stores.  Thanks for the great service - we'll call you again!"

"They were very good. The staff is very professional. They were very respectful about the house. They came in and inspected. They told what they could see and what they recommend. They weren't pushy or a hard shell. They explained exactly what they saw. There were options and they did the work in two separate visits. They did the duct work first. They came in a week later and gave me choices of furnaces; explained about different ones, the pros and the cons. I chose what I wanted. Another staff came and fixed that for me. They have different people for different things. One staff comes and explains everything and another comes and does the work. All the people were very nice, friendly, helpful, and professional. They came recommended to me from somebody else. Their price was reasonable; it?s expensive anyway and didn't shop anywhere. I went with an expensive furnace which was

efficient. I got a big chunk of rebate from the government. It was substantial. I got back $2200 and anther $100 for the

. I would definitely recommend them to someone else as well. I would definitely use this company in the future.

"They charged me a really good rate, the best rate in town. Based on the comparisons that I did with 3 other air conditionings,
San Diego HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
were pretty reasonable and they have a cut service and on dot kind of a process which was really good. I like the customer service and also it's a mom and pop kind of shop. The owner came out and they kind of do everything themselves and they were really good. The warranty they provide, instead of it being a one year warranty they do a 5 year warranty for labor. They were just really honest and really easy to work with. They were able to install the system in one afternoon which was great. They placed everything brand new. They were really good and really made it

"The initial meeting included a thorough description of all types of Trane air conditioning and heating systems. A written proposal was presented describing the air conditioning and furnace I had chosen including costs. The work was done the following week within a two day period. Mr.
San Diego HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
even brought over two of his own space heaters since we were experiencing cold weather at the time. The owner and co-owner returned several days later with the inspection team from Anchors Aweigh to assure that all work was done properly. I was continually asked if I had any questions or concerns during the entire installation procedure. I also received a call several days later to determine my satisfaction. I would recommend this company highly. One caveat though...the condenser for the Trane A/C system I chose is very large and needs to be positioned at least one foot from the house. Caution customers to check on the area first to determine whether the unit will leave enough space for people to pass by easily."

"Called on Friday and scheduled appt for Saturday. Repairman showed up on time and called about 20-30 minutes before arriving. Our furnace had an was cutting out on us during the middle of the night but would start working again after being off for a few hours. As luck would have it the furnance was working fine when the repairman arrived. After first checking it out he retruned to discuss in detail what was happening then continued to work until he reproduced the malfunction. Turned out to be a malfunctioning flame sensor and a 65.00 repair bill. Two days later it is still working fine. My hat's off to them for listening to the customer when the problem wasn't obvious and then digging in to figure it out. Thanks!"

"

came, checked it out, discovered a cracked surface ignitor, assumed that was the issue and replaced it. Whole service call took 20 minutes. ($180 for a 20 minute service call and a $30 part? No thanks) Unit worked again for a few hours, then quit. He came back, could no diagnose the problem and said I needed a new furnace at a cost of around $3k. I said no thanks and we called another person. That person came and fixed my unit (checking EVERYTHING) for $550. A little bit more enthusiasm to diagnose a problem, prior to just assuming I needed a new one at such great cost to me would have been appreciated. While I understand I did need a new Surface Ignitor, this company should not have charged that much for that small service, and they then should have tried to diagnose the problem much harder after failing to fix the problem."

"After a
San Diego HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
technician performed an annual inspection of the A/C and checked some things on the furnace, he claimed both needed replaced (see other report on that experience) and set up a meeting with a sales representative. The salesman did not spend any time calculating the proper size of furnace for the house and seemed to just assume that it should be the same size as the current one. He did not count the number of windows or ask about the square footage. The size of furnace he suggested seemed too big based on the research I'd done online. He said that he would drop off more information about the furnace and A/C units that he was recommending but never delivered that material. He didn't seem to have many options to offer anyway."

"Everything was great - I had looked on Angie's List for furnace repair. ASI and
San Diego HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
had a lot of ratings and pop up near the top of the
San Diego HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
list. We have used them both in the past for repair and an air conditioner, so I called, but they were both booked out for 3-4 days. My husband hates being cold, so I kept trying. I called a few others that were near the top of the list, but everyone was booking into the following week. I remembered there was a sticker on the furnace, so looked at that and that's how I found
San Diego HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
. They had left a sticker on the furnace from a previous repair done before we owned the house. I looked up
San Diego HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
' rating on Angie's List and although there were no recent reports, the two older reports were all As. So I called and
San Diego HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
was available within 24 hours! He arrived promptly at the agreed upon time and was very professional. He got the furnace working and we will be warm again at night.
San Diego HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
may not have a lot of ratings on Angie's List, but he does as good a job as ASI and
San Diego HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
. We'll use him again! He should be up higher on the list!
