Stuccoing over texture coat an economical solution

My house has a horrible texture coat with vertical strips of wood throughout as part of the design. I wanted to stucco over it, but the bids I've gotten are extremely high.

Now I'm thinking about having the texture coat removed and then painting the house. However, I can't seem to find anyone to remove the texture coat. One contractor said it couldn't be sandblasted because that would damage the underlying wood. — Angie's List  member Susan Riess

In this case, the most economical solution is to go with the initial idea of stuccoing over the texture coat and wood, says Dave Peters, president of highly rated Lone Star State Construction in San Antonio.

If it's done properly and you have a structurally sound home, you can have the stucco applied with a chicken wire and scratch coat method, Peters says. The wire acts as a mesh and you tack the paper into the wall so it will hold the new stucco.

You want to make sure you have a good solid base to adhere the stucco. The wood strips mentioned should be secured to studs, so the weight of the stucco doesn't pull them away from the house.

He also says you need to decide whether you want integral color stucco, where the color is mixed in, or if you want to paint the stucco after it's applied. If there are problems with the original texture, you'd want to paint the stucco. That way if any problems seep into the new stucco and you have to repair it, it's a quick fix rather than re-stuccoing the entire surface.

There's no good way to do a touch-up on integral stucco because it's really hard to match the shade of the original stucco, whereas with paint you can go buy the same color. Sandblasting is expensive - does it work? Yes, but if price is a concern, you would want to avoid this option.
