San Antonio dance instructors discuss the lessons they offer

What styles of dancing do you teach?

Mario Alvarado: "All of the ballroom dances from smooth to Latin."

Minnie Craven: "We teach ballroom and Latin dances."

Brenda McFarlane: "I teach the Egyptian style of belly dancing."

Besides learning how to dance, what are some other reasons people take lessons?

Alvarado: "Sometimes people like to exercise so they can be fit, while other people like it because of the music. Some people like it because they get to meet people."

Craven: "A lot of the time, they take it for something to do, and they want to exercise and have a good time."

McFarlane: "Some people are just curious, some want to stay fit and some see performances and think it is a beautiful dance that doesn't look too harsh."

How do you charge for dance lessons and what's the cost?

Alvarado: "One group class is $12 for one hour. Our private lessons are $70 per hour."

Craven: "We charge by the hour. One hour costs $35 and every hour after that is $50."

McFarlane: "They can pay as they come, which is $15 for one hour."

How often do you recommend your clients take a class with you? Do they need to practice outside of class?

Alvarado: "It depends. Group classes can be done anytime. I think anyone doing dance should do it four to six hours per week. They should definitely practice outside of class, because it builds confidence and skills on the dance floor."

Craven: "We usually recommend at least two to three times per week. They need to practice outside of class to go over their steps and remember what we teach them."

McFarlane: "I suggest twice a week depending on how enthused they are. Practicing outside of class is always encouraged."

How do you handle the most dancing-challenged clients?

Alvarado: "We try to go at their pace and make it as simple and fun as possible. We can be very flexible and relaxed. There isn't a single person who doesn't have the capability."

Craven: "I just tell them that nothing is impossible, but they have to want to do it. I encourage them and laugh with them when they make mistakes."

McFarlane: "I just tell them not to forget the journey, have fun, relax and laugh together."
