"Did a great job of fixing both problems and was very nice and profession. Very clean, he put everything back the way it was. 1 problem - when he slid the fridge" back he inadvertently unplugged the fridge. I found it leaking the next morning and thought it was the tubing but when I tried to empty the ice bucket I noticed the ice was melting and that it was unplugged. Fortunately the leak didn't go onto our hardwoods - so no problems. I could see how this could happen to anybody but the plumber might want to make sure the fridge is plugged in before he leaves. We just moved into this house so the fridge was empty - so no food was ruined.

" is the best we have ever had. He comes on time, makes a quick and accurate survey of the work required, and is an" excellent and meticulous workman. Also a good guy and will come quickly if necessary. The only problem might be his popularity and the number of remodeling jobs he has. His bill is fair but not cheap.

Angie's Answers

?

This part of Don's answer follows my thoughts exactly:

"You want to deal with a professional person that is selling you a bath that was not working as a cashier a few months ago."

Do you go to the gracery store and ask for someone to cook your steak?  Of course not.  So why would you go to a building supply store and ask for someone to remodel your bathroom?  Rarely will you see a legitimate contractor take jobs from a retailer.  Why?  Because they don't pay much.  Speed is the most important thing to them, along with getting it done cheap so they can maximize profit.  About 10 years ago I worked on a few contracted structures (sheds, garages, etc.) from Home Depot.  They contracted to another company who then contracted people to build them.  At that time they paid a flat $250 for a contractor to pick up the supplies, build the structure on site, paint it, and use their own tools.  By the time the cost of a helper, fuel, tools, etc. was factored in there was nothing left for the contractor.  Anyway, the point I'm making is that the guy who will eventually show up to do the work will be so far down the line that everyone else has already taken the profits (Home Depot, ReBath, possibly someone else, and finally the guy working) that he probably isn't going to care what kind of job he does for you, quality or not.  He likely won't have much experience due to a high turnover rate and any experience he does have will probably be limited to his teachings at that job.  He probably can't answer any building code questions or identify other hazards once things are taken apart and he certainly won't do anything he doesn't have to while it is apart.

Another problem I've heard of repeatedly is that if (when) there is a problem there is always someone else you need to speak to.  You might have to talk to 4 or 5 different people before you can even get to someone that can address the problem.  Now multiply that due to having (at least) two separate companies involoved.  "You need to call ReBath."  "No, you need to call Home Depot."

You hire a general contractor for a reason.  We learn, understand, and keep up on building codes.  We are the one point of contact for all questions and issues on a project.  There is no manager in some other store, state, etc. to call.  You contract a GC and deal directly with that GC, or a site supervisor in some cases.  There isn't a huge chain of command to get through to reach the main decision maker for the business.  In a bathroom remodel you need someone who can do the plumbing, repair and/or move any electrical, install tile/flooring, drywall and paint, trim carpentry, and someone to coordinate all of that.  Sometimes you can find a qualified contractor to do all of those things and sometimes he will sub-contract out certain components (especially due to licensing laws) but you will always have that one definitive person to go to for any questions or issues.  A salesman in a store doesn't visit your home throughout the project to check on the status.  Even if he did, he likely wouldn't now what he is looking at.  The same goes for a retail manager.

Hire someone who specializes in taking care of your home.  Hire based on reputation & knowledge/experience.  You are right that not every customer can be happy so an occassional bad review can be found on just about any business.  Read the reviews, not the grades (they are always biased).  Look to see if the contractor attempted to rectify the problem, not ignore it.  Lastly, unless you want cheap, sloppy work and a whole heap of other troubles, don't hire based on a low price.

?

You gave a good description, but without seeing some photos and maybe even the space itself it would still just be a guess.

A few years ago we replaced a significant load bearing beam to raise it up a foot in the new kitchen.  It was nearly 17' long with a new LVL beam.  For us this was pretty reasonable.  The LVL was about $250.  And maybe 12-15 2x6s, to temporarily support the ceiling joists, were probably like another $75.  The labor was $800.  There was also some finish work done afterward, but that was worked into a much bigger job for the entire floor.

Technically speaking, it is likely that you need to have something spec'd out by an engineer or architect, to calculate load, etc.  I don't know your area but in most places "a mere contractor, GC, or carpenter" is probably not allowed to just rip out a load-bearing wall without someone who is qualified to do the load calculations (which will be VERY conservative.  A brand new LVL will be VASTLY stronger than it really needs to be, but it won't be expensive.  The typical contractor will be like "hey we'll sister up two 2x12s", and not really know if that'll do the trick or not.  I'm not saying that all guys are like that, but ... it is what it is.

What you are talking about is probably at least a bit more involved and I'd love to give a good estimate but it's hard to say without a better understanding of the space.

You may be looking at $1500 - $3500?  It depends on too many specifics that we just can't know without a bunch of photos, and maybe even opening up a wall or ceiling to see exactly how temporary supports could be installed, and where the permanent beam/header could be placed and properly supported.  Your span isn't all that big so if at all possible I would do it without columns - it'll be much nicer.

If I were you I would first have a quick consultation with a "professional engineer".  They are qualified to calculate load etc - and cost a lot less than a full architect.  In my experience, an engineer just wants to provide a quick, proper solution without a lot of extra BS.  My experience with architects has been less than favorable.  Too much drama and expense and he actually spec'd things wrong and my carpenter had to pick up on it.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.  Good luck!!!

Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
?
What I always ask my customers regarding this question when remodeling bathrooms is how good they will be about maintaining and cleaning the new bathroom, especially when the old bathroom is obviously neglected.  If you are one of those people who wipes the glass down after a shower and cleans your bathroom every week or two you really don't need to spend the extra money.  If you are at the other end of the spectrum and clean it when it finally bothers you enough it may not be a bad investment.  I've had customer tell me they can tell a difference compared to their old glass without it and others say it made no difference at all.

Rich came to the rescue when another contractor quit before finishing the installation of a kitchen counter. Rich and team were responsive, helpful and fair. They jumped in mid-job, despite how difficult that can be, and prioritized finishing our project quickly. This was a small job, and I'm sure Rich had much larger project going on, but he still ...More found time to take care of us. Being new to SLC, we were very impressed with his professionalism. We will always call Rich for any remodeling needs - backsplash and bathrooms are next! Thanks Rich!

They didn't do a professional job. I contacted CR before I purchased this coupon. I had them come over before I bought the coupon to give me a free estimate. I had started the project on my own, but ran out and time due to work responsibilities. I was about halfway done with the project. With my knowledge of the project, ...More I assumed that it would take about a week. I took them over to my neighbors house to show them their recent bathroom remodel to give them an idea of the direction of my bathroom project. I asked how much time it would take to finish the project. They stated that it should take approximately 7-10 days. I decided to buy the special for a weeks worth of work. It was okay if they were to be a bit shy of completion, as I would do the small amount of finishing required on my own. Mostly, I need a functioning bathroom with a working shower and toilet. was assigned to the project. They came on a Saturday to look at the project, but only stayed a few minutes. As there were many details to hammer out, I contacted them on Sunday to go over a few things. seemed very bothered that I called on a Sunday. They said not to worry and that they would take care of everything. They started out with no communication. I started getting worried at that point. They came to start the project on Monday at around 8:30. I was working, but my girlfriend was able to be at my home to let them in and to go out for any materials needed. He called me at work to discuss the project as I had originally wanted to do on Saturday. The conversation was more about him pushing his agenda of what he thought should be done. I had already lowered the floor and put in a new sub-floor about a quarter of an inch lower than the original one. I has also already torn down the walls to the studs and replaced the walls with Backer boards. He didn't like the backer. He wanted to tear down all of the walls and install gypsum boards instead which is an inferior product. I has already spent money and taking everything down would be a waste of time and money causing a delay in the project. He stated that he could not move forward with the project unless he was able to do this.I had one wall that not fully completed and I agreed to have that piece and the pieces adjacent to be gypsum, but I told him that the ceiling. tub surround, and closet to not be touched as it is a better product for moisture. This process should have only taken about 5 to 10 minutes as there were only 3 panels to take down and replace. He agreed to that. I had my girlfriend go to the store are all that he needed and I would take care of the cost. He had her buy a bunch of gypsum boards and other items. When she got back, he stated that he was going to take down all of the Hardy backer though I told him not to because he had to do it his way or no way. It took him the whole day. When I got home the whole place had been taken apart. He pressured me into keeping it that way. In order to not another day, I told him to finish what he was doing. I asked him again what his plan is and asked him for a grocery list of what is needed for the next day so that I can purchase the list when I get home from work to save time. I also asked for an itinerary for each day of work. He was resistant to this. I asked my girlfriend if the list was given to her as requested and he had given her a hard time. He finally left a list of the main stuff that I wanted to have finished, i.e. the tub, toilet, etc. I was upset about the Hardy backer, but wanted to have things done. I ended up having to take off work because my girlfriend could not be there and he had not left me a list of materials as requested. I asked if there was anything that he could be doing while I was out buying the materials and he said there was not which would be wasting more time. He refused to do anything until I got back with the materials. While I was at the store, I called to ask if there was anything else that was needed that was not on the list that he had given me. He stated that he could not move forward until there was a new subfloor. I told him that he did not need to put one in because I had. He then said that I had left a gap and that he could not install the toilet because of the flange. He said that I needed to get 3/4 plywood and OSB board and that he would install it. I was extremely upset because I had my Prius and he could have told me before I left so that I could have taken my truck. I had to come back for my truck. When I got back, he then stated that he could indeed do it with my work waiting again more time and money. He continued this pattern on other days as well. When he finally for the walls up and mudded, he decided that he could not do anything else until they dried. I pointed out that there was plumbing to be tied in and electrical that needed to be run. He refused to get to anything else. He said that he was taking the day off. I of course had an issue with this. He said that we would come back on Monday to make up the time. He took off another day after only two hours of work. I asked that he make up that time as well. He said that he would give me a couple of hours on Tuesday. Neighbors have told me that they noticed on some occasions that when I was not there that he would knock off early. I am of course suspect at this point as he has me wasting time with going to get materials. On the day that I went to get the OSB board, I mentioned that he could tie in the plumbing in the tub to the main waste drain. He said he wasn't comfortable, because he was not wearing the right . He argued with me and basically refused to do it. When I got back, he had not done anything. He then demanded that I buy bull nosed tile and that he would not do anything else until that was done. I bought the bull nose tile and went to work. When I got back, I noticed that he had only touched maybe two pieces of it and had used the tile that I already had purchased. He had lied to me. He had only did a wall at that point. It took him three days to complete the tiling that he did before my time was up. He waisted so much time that this is all that he completed. He put up, mudded, and red guarded the walls. He installed the bathroom fan, tiled 1/3 of a bathtub wall, 1/2 of the main wall of the bathtub surround, and did not touch the largest wall at all. He did not tie in the plumbing. I called because the tile wasn't even straight . He told me to pull off the tiles that I did not like and he would come back and reinstall them. I let him know that I did not call him to be put to work. I let him know that I was not going to pay him to do this. I called and explained what happened. came down the second to the last day and fixed it, but now the rest of the work was not completed and there was no more tile completed. I told them that they need to make things right and that we were not even 55% of the way there. I sent the itinerary that I was given as what would be completed in the time allotted. After that, I could not get in touch with him. I called and emailed with no response. I finally sent a message on Angie's List and he responded so that he does not look bad. He then said that is now out of town on another job and that there was nothing that he could do. He said that it is my word against his guy's and he was going with his guy. That was the last that I heard from them. I still have no plumbing and my bathroom is not complete.

Overall very well. Jud and were easy to work with and had great sub-contractors with whom they have a great reputation. For the most part the construction schedule was on track and as expected. The final product is beautiful and I am happy with the service.

was very professional and dependable. If he had plans to be at the house and something came up and he couldn't come, he was very good about communicating that to us. We felt very comfortable giving him a key to the house and he was very careful to be sure everything was locked up before he left if we weren't home. ...More He even brought a large package that was delivered into the house. I was not expecting that package and appreciated that he just brought it in the house as I was not home. He always called to clarify if he wasn't sure about something we had discussed and he made some good suggestions about small things that we should do. We have received another bid from to come back in the spring and do some additional work in the garage and will certainly contact him to do that work.

Rich is very easy to do business with. He is prompt, responsive, and reasonable. His prices are great. I have a complicated Avenues home and he did a great job of getting everything done on budget. TIme ran longer than expected, but no surprise there I guess. When I did not like something he was quick to adjust. He was perfect for this job.

One of the worst construction experiences I have had. At times had a few days delay in between sub contractors showing up for work. The project was supposed to be 2 weeks, ended up at 4 weeks. One of the subs told the contractor he was showing up for work to finish our install job and never did, leaving a half installed cabinet and no shower fixtures ...More in place for 2 days. One of the installers broke our toilet and medicine cabinet. The dry wall sub ended up putting a texture on our walls that we never asked for, so we asked they do it over to fix it. Overall, not timely, not a quality job and not a value for the cost.

The remodel went well. Rich was very accommodating to our budget. He was also very responsive to problems that arose and helped us decide on the best course of action. I wish that they had given us a bit more notice on when they were going to show up and what they were going to work on.
I'd also add that Rich seemed to be very honest.
