"After giving me a verbal bid
said he would e-mail me a formal bid and that he could start Monday. I didn't receive the bid and after" making several calls I finally got hold of him. He seemed apologetic and said his sander broke down on another job. He said it would be Thursday before he could start my job. I called him again later in the week to verify he was starting on Thursday, and he said that he had me down on the schedule for the next Monday. Didn't hear from him all weekend. On Monday morning around 8:30 a.m. he called and said "are you still planning on us?" - I said "yes, I guess so but I hadn't heard from you and I'd never gotten a written bid " He said 'oh, I will send you a bid".He said "I really don't need to send you a bid cuz it will be what we talked about - which was $950 for the floors and $450 for the crown molding and $100 for the quarter round". When the bid came, it was $95.00 more than we discussed. His bid indicated he wanted half down, so I thought we would discuss the discrepancy in price when he asked for that payment. He never asked, and so we had the discussion at the end of the work.
had a sub install the crown molding on Monday. He came at 11:30, finished up at 5:00 and didn't caulk or fill in the nail holes, as he was supposed to do. When I mentioned this to
he said he could try and get him back to do it. Later, he back-pedaled and said that really wasn't included in the bid, even though the bid said "fill all gaps and nail holes".
started on the floors on Tuesday and finished on Friday. They looked okay except on further inspection, after I paid him, I noticed that there were lap lines and streaking, which means he spread the top coat too thin. He really needs to come back and re-coat to get rid of the lap lines. I called and left a message about this and he has never returned my phone calls. All I can say is if you plan to use this company, make sure you get your bid well before they start the work and and make sure he doesn't try to increase your bill mid-way through the job. His non-responsiveness, to me, shows he does not stand behind his work.

"The quality of the work was excellent. The floor is beautiful. There was a significant difference in height between the existing tile floor in the kitchen and" entry and the new hardwood in the living room, however they were able to create a transition that is hardly noticeable. They cut the baseboard in the living room and installed the wood under it so that there is also a seamless baseboard transition into the kitchen. I have recommended
to two acquaintances. I can't comment as to whether the cost is reasonable or not. I wanted a quality job and basically relied on the reviews without regards to cost. The installers were always on time and very courteous.

Hardwood Flooring

There are few home improvement choices that add as much character and warmth — not to mention resale value — as hardwood flooring. But before hiring a flooring contractor to install or repair hardwood flooring, it’s important to know both its advantages and disadvantages.

Wood is a living, breathing product that contracts and expands as it releases and absorbs moisture. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Danica K. of Independence, Ohio)

From the wall street journal online:

"Etiquette and tipping experts agree that tipping a contractor and his employees isn't expected because contractors offer to do a job for you at a specific price. Any extra money they would want would be built into their bid. Also, it's a business relationship rather than one where they are performing a personal service for you like a waiter or a maid. But if the employees do extra jobs around the house, then experts say it is appropriate to tip a cash amount equivalent to the task; "tip gifts" such as cookies and drinks can count. "The key to tipping is whether or not it was outside the scope of what was normally expected," says Mark Brenner, author of "Tipping for Success!"

My opinion is that a little bit of courtesy (snacks, drinks, expression of appreciation etc.) goes a long way and upon completion of their work you feel compelled by a job well done to offer a little extra in the form of a tip - go for it, but do not feel obligated.
?
Agreed.  If you have existing cracking in porcelain you need to know the cause first.  I don't know of any reputable contractor that would dare install tile over existing tile.  Also, any manufacturer warranties for defects would be null due to improper installation.  Did the contractor offer this solution or did you ask for it?  The mear fact that he is agreeing to or offering it tells me you need to leave this guy for someone who knows what they are talking about before he does only half the job which will have to be redone in the near future, costing you more in the long run.

I get so many calls from customers that were talked into a "cheaper" way to do something only to find the work very sub-par.  The sad part is they are out the money they spent in the first place along with the additional amount I have to charge just to undo what the first contractor did before I can do it right.  This floor could end up costing you double what it should if it's not done right.

This was honestly one of the best experiences I've had with a contractor in my life. From the first contact I had with
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
to the day the project was finished, it has been a pleasure working with them. I called on a Friday afternoon and
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
returned my call within 30 min. She was available to measure my home the next morning (a Saturday which was convenient for me because I work all week) and gave me excellent advice on how to match the new wood to the existing wood. I asked for bids from a few different contractors and
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
was very fairly priced (but not the cheapest, which is probably a good thing). Not only did I know I was getting a fair price, but I felt confident that this company would stand by their work and deliver on what they said they would do. I was right and the company actually exceeded all my expectations by communicating clearly, managing time efficiently, being flexible with my schedule and going the extra mile to make sure my floors were perfect.
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
even replaced broken baseboards for me just to make sure the project looked awesome when they "handed" it over. To top things off,
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
graciously waited an extra day to cash my check because I was late transferring money into that account. I absolutely LOVE my floors and cannot recommend
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
enough. This is a company that has built its reputation on delighting its customers and you cannot go wrong by choosing them for your hardwood floors.

I found
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
on Angie's List because of the good reviews on him. We hired him to finish the stairwell and some molding and transitions.
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
and his crew moved our carpet out, cut the stairs, which were covered with carpet. He noticed the squeaking noise of our stairs and decided to fix it before installing the floor and stair noses. He also made custom transition pieces, which look like the finished product that you would buy for ~50 bucks.
His goal is to get the job done as perfect as possible, without rushing or any shortcuts. We greatly appreciate his hard work and professionalism. We will definitely hire him again!

Working with
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
and her crew was by far the best experience we had with contractors as we renovated our new house this summer. We had originally planned to refinish the old floors in the house, but upon taking up the carpet in the living room we discovered a giant plywood patch in the middle of the floor.
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
walked us through our options, putting no pressure on us to make any particular choice, but it was clear that the best option was the most expensive: install new hardwood flooring.
We could not be happier with the results! Our new floor is gorgeous and really makes the entire house feel lighter, more comfortable and more attractive.
It was very easy to arrange a work schedule with
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
and her crew, even though we had a tight deadline for moving into the new house and also had to coordinate other renovation projects (carpet, painting, etc.) simultaneously. We were always kept well informed of the progress of the flooring installation, and the work was done exactly to schedule. Arranging a payment schedule was just as easy.
The final product is beautiful, and that is due to the skill and pride of workmanship that everyone at
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
showed. They very clearly knew exactly what they were doing, and they attended to the smallest details. A couple of weeks after the floor was finished,
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
even came back to our house to
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
out scratches that the painters had made in the floor, and she showed us the right way to do that sort of maintenance in the future.
We cannot recommend
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
highly enough! They were great!

We had a fantastic experience with

Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
and his crew were great to work with. They leveled the flooring, installed the hardwood, stained and coated the wood. We had them install at two different times - the upper level was done last year and the lower level this year. They were extremely professional and responsive.
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
kept us informed and updated every step of the way. His crew was on time, professional and clean. They hit the target dates we were given, even finishing earlier than we had hoped for. And, the result is absolutely beautiful! We couldn't be happier. I highly recommend

We had our small, 57-year-old, living room floor refinished by
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
. I was concerned with how well it would look after years of damage from multiple layers of carpet tacks and staples, scratches from digging up tile from the entryway, and floor board separation where a brick, wood
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
, surround once was. The floors look great, and the experience went well with the owner,
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
, and the crew,
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
and
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
(I apologize if I misspelled their names.)
It took four half-days. They have a large, portable vacuum that minimized the dust particles, plus plastic was hung in the openings just in case. We only had one day of smelly stain. The water-based finish was fast drying and not smelly at all. For extra protection, we went with three coats of finish.
They were an experienced father-son team who cared about the job, and were patient with our moment of stain-color indecision. I appreciated their advice e.g., our initial stain choice was
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
, which they suggested was too dark for the small room size. We chose Special Walnut, a lighter finish and we are very happy with it.
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
was also prompt, professional, and knowledgable. I am glad she suggested using a vacuum to clean, instead of a Swiffer, which could scratch the finish.

Both
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
and
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
were extremely prompt with communication and appointments.
Salt Lake City Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
came out and gave an estimate and explained the process. He delivered the wood for the repair about a week in advance for it to acclimate, and he went to three different places to find the wood with the right grain. He and Will showed up exactly on time the first day of work. Will did all of the work, and he did an exceptional job. He had to removed damaged wood, make cuts to existing flooring, and integrate new wood into the floor. He then sanded, sealed and gave it a polyurethane finish. I can't believe it's the same floor.
I would recommend this company to anyone looking at refinishing their floors. They were polite, prompt, and professional, and their work is excellent.
