Dear Angie: How do I end a letter turning down a contractor? I have three quotes for a home improvement project and picked one to do the job. I want to send a letter to the other two saying I went with someone else, but I don’t know how to end the letter on a positive note.

The plumbing, granite, and tile subcontractors worked very hard to give us good service and we were pleased with them. Sorry it did not work out as we had hoped."

He totally worked around our schedule by coming in the evening around 5:30 p.m. when we could both be there. We needed two interior walls removed, a complete kitchen renovation, and basement refinishing. He was very up front about the fact that he would not feel comfortable taking out the walls and redesigning the kitchen, since he does not do electrical or plumbing work. However, he seemed confident that he could provide us what we need in terms of basement refinishing (drywall construction, floor leveling, etc.). We really appreciated the fact that he was honest about what he can and cannot do. And he was just a super nice guy all around. We will definitely be calling

"Front porch has water damage from the soffetts down to the base of the porch. porch columns supports were also damaged and needed rebuilding in some areas.The porch had some sag on one side and some of the boards had separated and water was causing them to give and not be sturdy.Even though the roof had been repaired by another company the main reason for the leaks were cracks around the drain pipes ( discoverd after repair started).There was extensive damage to some of the wood and the boards had to be replaced.All new wood was primed and painted. The front porch was painted after all necessary repairs were made.

The quality of work was excellent, and the little things that inevitably come up when remodeling a 1950's home never seemed to throw him (nor increase the price)."

"Worst contractor I have ever used. Took 11 months and three different carpenters to convert an existing carport to a garage, which should have been a 2 month job. I had the first carpenter removed from the job as he cut into a live electrical breaker box with a circular saw! After I threw him off the job for being unsafe, they sent him back out as a helper for the second carpenter! I threw him off the job again.

could not understand why I was so upset. Took three tries with major repairs between each inspection to pass the Henrico county building inspector. Thats why it took so long for the job. Charged what I later found out was about double the going rate for the work. The back wall of the garage which was sheetrock and supposedly sealed on the outside developed black mold from water seeping in. I had to have the sheetrock ripped out, a portion of the back wall rebuilt correctly, and the drain system they installed under the deck rebuilt. On top of it all the garage has pooled water on the floor every time it rains since day one. "

. Our back door is mostly glass and the moulding had rotted. He searched around trying to find the most economical way to repair the door. Also, when our house was build the trim board were installed incorrectly allowing moisture in and he replaced the neccessary trim boards correctly. Once again before starting work, he researched options so that the new boards would closely match the board that did not have to be replaced. It was a delight to work with someone who treated our house and pocketbook like it was his own."

was the most informative contractor I have ever met or dealt with. Every single question was answered and explained in great detail. He also provided much information without the need of me asking questions. I was especially grateful that he left the large air filters in my home for an extra weekend at no additional charge since my home was vacant. This just really helped in cleaning the air. This job was started and completed on time and exactly as I expected. My only complaint is that I did find a few cigarette butts in my driveway. It was not more than 3-5, but I do not smoke and found that unprofessional. I also received many follow up calls throughout the process to keep me up to date on what the crew was doing.
