"Person showed up on time and insisted that he survey entire house including crawl space, attic and all rooms. I was told that they would not install a furnace unless we upgraded our entire duct work. They were to give me a written estimate in 2 days. Got a phone call about 2 weeks later that they needed to set an appointment to meet with both my wife and I to explain their estimate. We had already had the furnace replaced by the time they called.they were more focused on what they insisted they needed to do rather than what the customer wanted."

"This company has been around a lot longer than most of their competitors, and has more staff. Their staff wears uniforms, unlike many of their competitors, and they even slip on "footies" over their shoes, before entering your house.

had just switched over to a new software system the day before my appmt, and apparently there were still some bugs they were working out. As a result, my 10 a.m. appmt somehow got switched to Noon. The technician was apologetic about the scheduling snafu. I had planned to be home all day, so on this occasion it didn't matter to me.

was actually providing me with a THIRD opinion on the reported leak in my indoor air handling system. I had another HVAC competitor stop by the day before to provide a second opinion. Of the three

HVAC companies I had stop by,

was the most "professional". They seemed to have more tools and instrumentation for diagnosing problems than their competition, and the senior technician who visited me seemed quite competent. He verified that there seemed to be a tiny leak in one of the copper coils, and even narrowed down which coil, but due to the tiny size, couldn't identify the exact leak spot. All told, he was at my house about 30 mins diagnosing the problem with various instruments. Before leaving, he presented me with an estimate for replacing the coil assembly, which was more than what the first HVAC company had quoted. Before the

technician arrived, another

residential estimator/ salesman stopped by because I had requested a quote on insulating duct board under my house. The estimator/ salesman didn't feel duct board needed to be insulated, because it's already insulated by design. This concurred with info I had received from the other two HVAC companies that stopped by (though their service technician was the one who consulted with me, not a separate estimator/ salesman). If the

estimator/ salesman had said goodbye at that point, I would have been happy & impressed. Instead, he wanted to come inside my house to see my indoor air handling system. He immediately proceeded to pitch to me the merits of replacing my entire system ($5000-$7000), or at the very least, my indoor system ($2500-$3500). He made this sales pitch without even verifying I had a leak, even though I reminded him -- repeatedly -- that the leak was not verified and may be of little consequence. Not wanting to listen to his sales pitch all morning, I tried politely to say "goodbye", and after about 15 mins he finally took the hint and departed.

seems to charge more than their competition, but as stated previously, they do come across as more professional. Perhaps they do a more thorough job, or maybe stand behind their work better. Not sure, but they must be doing something right to have been around as long as they have been. I was disappointed they didn't address "return on investment" options, given the customer's particular situation. For example, spending thousands of dollars on a part or an entire new HVAC system, doesn't make much sense if: (a) you can't afford it right now, or (b) the problem is so small, it won't really make much difference in your comfort or utility bill, or (c) you'll never recoup the expense before you move, or the system needs to be replaced again. I notice the sales pitch given by HVAC companies regarding "b" above, is often a ridiculous exaggeration, claiming a DRASTIC reduction in your utility bills and MUCH more comfortable temps in your house. How much does it cost to install a new furnace?

Two warranties govern furnace installs. The first is the manufacturer's warranty, which comes with the furnace and protects against defects in the furnace itself. A contractor's warranty covers the labor involved to make repairs if the furnace doesn't work properly. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Wayne L. of St. Louis)

Are you thinking about installing a new furnace? The following price considerations can help you determine the best furnace for your home, and save money too.

What is a fair price for R-22?

By 2015, there will be a 90 percent reduction in the production of R-22. By 2020, it will no longer be produced at all. Because production is limited, costs to charge existing units that are leaking R-22 refrigerant have gone up and are only expected to rise. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member John R. of Lake Mary, Fla.)

Dear Angie: My air conditioning contractor just charged me $100 per pound for R-22 refrigerant. This is a lot more than I paid four years ago. Is this a fair price these days?

Which furnace filters provide the best indoor air quality?

Replacing the air filter will improve air quality and extend the life of a furnace.

Be sure to check the minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating when evaluating air filters. You'll also want to learn about the types of filters and what products improve your home’s indoor air quality.

Understanding furnace efficiency ratings

Check the big yellow tag on your furnace for the energy efficiency rating. (Photo courtesy of Angie’s List member Cynthia M. of Springfield, Mass.)

Understanding what energy efficiency ratings mean for furnaces can help you make the best purchase. Ratings don't tell you how much the energy costs will be, but they tell you how well the furnace uses the energy.

"The ratings above are misleading. Our problems were much less with the workmanship than with management. The sales rep assured us that the installation team was fully up-to-date on this relatively new system and that the job would be done in three days. He was just a bit off the

. The installers and their immediate boss were most affable, diligent and conscientious, and they were certainly experienced, but not with this system. They were reading the manual and calling NuTone constantly while trying to complete the job. Days ran into weeks. Early on, the new condensation pump was improperly installed and flooded the area. When the humidifier consistently failed to reach its target, the firm replaced it with a larger one that worked only a little better. Of course, we were loath to pay the remainder of the bill before the job was completed to our satisfaction. The owner paid us a visit in early February with a beefy associate in tow, claiming that the job was done and demanding payment . He met with obvious skepticism our protestations that the system was not right. We paid, reluctantly. Subsequently, we smelled smoke in the middle of the night and called immediately. It turned out that the mother board had blown and had to be replaced. The owner offered no apology for dismissing our valid concerns. Instead of having no nights without heat as we had been assured would be the case, we suffered a total of six nights with space heaters while the system was inoperable. Finally, the job was done in the first week of March. Since then we have had few complaints. Had the sales rep told us honestly that the firm had no experience with the IQ system, we would have gone elsewhere and saved a lot of headaches."

"We had our furnace go out in January and it had to be replaced. We called three contractors to come in and give estimates, all of whom responded within a day or so.

came out and provided a detailed quote and took the time to explain all the options in suitable detail. The quote was very competitive - in fact substantially less for a similar unit from another company. The quoted price was inclusive (furnace, labor, new thermostat). They started the installation within two days (we had a short wait for the furnace to come in). The installation crew was terrific. Because of cramped conditions, it was a difficult job but they worked steadily and kept the job site clean and tidy. Once the new furnace was installed (second day) they discovered that they also had to replace the air intake and exhaust lines (it was a high efficiency furnace) with larger diameter PVC due to the length of the run. This work was done with no additional cost. I was very pleased with the outcome of the purchase of the new furnace and will use them for all maintenance work in the future. I can highly recommend

without hesitation.

"Working with
Richmond HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
and Cooling was just an absolute pleasure. I received a call from my tenant saying that there was no heat at the property. I called another HVAC contractor that I found on Angie's List and they came out and said the system was a complete loss and needed to be replaced. They then had a sales person call me and give me an estimate of $9,500.00 to replace the systems. The whole house is only 1200 square feet and the price was outrageous. Then I called my Uncle and he introduced me to
Richmond HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
and Cooling.

States came out to the house and confirmed that the system needed to be replaced and reviewed my options. He actually went so far as to recommend we replace the furnace now but then wait until the Spring to replace the AC. We scheduled a time to get the system and it was fully installed in a day. The tenant was happy and I no longer have to worry about calls to say the heating or cooling went out in the property. In addition to owning

"I have used this company in the past for service and I will give everyone of their technicians rave reviews. They are a little pricey, but in my opinion were worth the cost. I recently needed new hvac equipment and was hoping they would be able to give me a competitive offer. I was really unhappy with the estimates (2 sales reps). I found another smaller company on Angie's List with excellent ratings that blew them out of the water. I think
Richmond HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
overdoes it on the warranties and spends too much on advertising to be competitive, too bad.

"My complaint was that they charged me for one and a half hours at $125 per hour. When I called to complain that they had been at my house less than an hour, I was told that I was charged from the time the crew was dispatched...in other words I paid for their commuting time. So that was $187.50 for about an hour work. What really takes the cake is the materials charges. They charged me $10 for a filter that I have bought for $5; $10 for a nozzle that costs about $5 and another $10 for a little mesh strainer. Then come the really ridiculous charges: $10 for "oil disposal fee" (I don't know what oil they took away); $5 for the use of the vacuum cleaner!! Then there was the unexplained "miscellaneous" fee of $4 and a gas surcharge of $7. So the total for materials was a whopping $84. I called them and spoke to the receptionist who answered my phone and said that I wanted some adjustment as I have never paid close to this much before for having my furnace serviced. She said that all the charges were standard. I said that I wanted to speak with the office manager; I never got a return phone call and will never use this company again. They pad everything they do and nickel and dime you to death."

"Arrived on time, with all the equipment needed. Laid down tarps to protect my flooring. Installation took 2 days, just as predicted by estimater. The people doing the installation were courteous, did not smoke nor use swear words, were very knowledgable and nice. The owner stopped by several times to make sure I was happy with the work, and to check on the progress. They did a great job and I would highly recommend them."

"They are the best company on the planet. They call right back, remembered my dogs, tried to save me money and did a great job. Their secretary is so nice. I'm a retired teacher and I put professionalism first, and they are the best."

"Over the years, I have been more than satisfied with the installation, performance and servicing of all the equipment I purchase with the exception of the natural gas fired tankless water heater which they replaced after good faith efforts to service it. There has never been a problem with oil delivery. On the rare occasions that I have had problems, i.e., the tankless water heater or an AC, their service department, up to and including the service manager, have either promptly solved the problem or replaced the equipment. On such an occasion, the owner called me himself to be certain I was satisfied. I have enjoyed my contacts with all their staff, office and field; and I have always felt fairly treated in regard to costs."
