Alleged bathroom remodel sinks homeowner hopes

COMPLAINT: Michele Remington, Lillington, N.C.

"I hired Performance Construction Group Inc. in Raleigh for a complete renovation of my downstairs bathroom and partial renovation of the upstairs bathroom. I paid 50 percent of the price upfront. The project hasn't been completed within the promised three-week time frame, and the contractor is no longer returning calls. The quality of the work completed to date is questionable, including: the shower doesn't work properly, and the tile and seat aren't level, leaving a gap above the shower door; the outlet and light in the shower lack covers; the vanity has two large holes in the bottom of the cabinet; and the cabinet kick plate isn't level.

"There's also a gap between the tile bathroom floor and the hardwood floor in the hallway. The tile floors also weren't sealed; I completed that myself. They asked my husband and I to purchase tile and fixtures but never reimbursed us. My e-mail to the contractor was undeliverable and calls have gone unanswered.

"Subcontractors, including the electrician and plumber, haven't been paid, and additional electric and plumbing work is still needed. Throughout the project, I've been the one to initiate contact, reminding them of the work that remains to be completed. Each time, there is an excuse. At one point, the contractor told me that some customers are just hard to please."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want Performance to finish the project or pay someone else to finish and also provide a lien release. I also want reimbursement for the $1,058 I paid for supplies that were part of the contract. Finally, provide the warranty information for the cabinet, countertop and shower doors."
