Ceiling coverup leaves homeowner hanging

COMPLAINT: Mark and Melisa Turner, Cary, N.C.

"Paul Crisafi, owner of Raleigh-based Chrystola Tile, and his helper spent two-and-a-half days tiling the shower and around the tub in our master bathroom. On the second day, we came home and noticed muddy footprints in the guest bathroom and a dirty washcloth. The tile work was going OK, so we decided to let it go.

"We were pleased with the outcome. However, we never thought to check the room below the master bath.

"About two weeks after they finished, we discovered the ceiling in our family room didn't look right; we noticed a box of drywall screws sitting on our mantel and realized a large section of drywall had fallen down and someone had sloppily screwed that piece back.

"We called Paul, who said he didn't know anything about it, but that he'd left his helper in our house while he went to lunch. He said he'd get in contact with him and then contact us. He wrote the next day that 'he no longer works for me. I will call you to set up a time to repair it.'

"He was supposed to show up to fix our ceiling on at least five different occasions. He wouldn't show up, and then he'd have some kind of excuse and reschedule for another time. Eventually, he stopped promising to come. We reported him to the BBB.

"He immediately responded and offered to fix the ceiling or give us $200 toward fixing it. Since we'd already been down the road of trying to get him to show up and fix the ceiling, and because we really didn't trust him to work on anything else in our home, we said we'd take the money.

"It's been more than five months since he screwed up our ceiling and we have yet to have this resolved."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "We would like the $200 refund."
