Plastic flap on pet door an invitation for energy loss

I'm looking for a company or contractor that would install pet doors. Where should I have the door installed, and what should I expect out of the job? – Angie's List member Hector Sosa

Most pet doors are installed in an entry door rather than a wall, says Shawn von Allmen, owner of highly rated A-Z Home Repair & Improvements in Cary, N.C. He says when removing a pet door, it's easier to install a new entry door than repair drywall and siding from a wall installation.

Installing a pet door in a wall may also require extra parts to accommodate for the length needed to reach the exterior wall. Von Allmen adds that any experienced handyman should be able to do the installation, which should take one to two hours in an entry door or about three hours for an exterior wall.

Norm Reilly, owner of highly rated Reilly's Handyman Services in Cary, says many contractors won't install a pet door in a metal entry door because of the difficulty in cutting through it.

He adds that energy efficiency is a concern because pet doors are not airtight and usually only rely on a plastic flap as a barrier. To cut down on energy loss and help keep out potential thieves, Reilly recommends purchasing a pet door with an interior locking cover.

He also says it's important to make sure the pet door is properly sealed with acrylic or silicone caulk to prevent moisture penetration from damaging the door.
