"I originally hired to repair a toilet in a tenant's apartment while I was out of town and couldn't reach my plumber. We did not" meet in person. The job went smoothly enough, so I contracted him to replace a door. He also informed me at that time that he could power-wash moss that was growing on my walkways. I agreed to have him do that job too. He took many breaks, so it took a couple of days for him do get the door in place, but still no finishing of the frame, or caulking. I was out of town for a few weeks, when I returned I called to return to finish the door (filling gaps in the frame and caulking, along with cement under the threshold). He said he would bring an assistant along to do the power washing. I am always on the premises when I contractor I don't know well is working. I didn't notice when he first arrived, but when he got close to me looking at the work to be done, I could smell alcohol. worked for about half an hour, then took off leaving the 18 year old assistant to do the washing.........the kid had never operated a power washer before. When returned several hours later, he was clearly drunk.......VERY drunk. I told him that I couldn't have him doing any more work for me. He was always several hours late when times were scheduled, then he show up too late, and too drunk to do anything. He got very hostile, swore at me, then dumped cement on my front step, splashing it onto my car. My son had to step in, fearing was going to hit me. He was raging. He eventually gathered his things and left. I wouldn't let the assistant travel with a drunk driver, so I arranged for his transportation home. I have NEVER experienced anything like this! we've all had a contractor we weren't totally happy with, at one time or another. But, never one who is totally intoxicated on a regular basis, swears at you, and on violence because of their own behavior.

"Throughout the entire process everyone was extremely helpful and professional. Dealing with an older home and leaving the custom made cabinets in place, we encountered" some unexpected challenges which involved having to have a carpenter and electrician perform work. KCCofNE had their carpenter and electrician come out and do the work and did not charge any extra! The work looks great and everyone was a pleasure to work with. Would highly recommend them to all my friend and use them again in the future.

?

This part of Don's answer follows my thoughts exactly:

"You want to deal with a professional person that is selling you a bath that was not working as a cashier a few months ago."

Do you go to the gracery store and ask for someone to cook your steak?  Of course not.  So why would you go to a building supply store and ask for someone to remodel your bathroom?  Rarely will you see a legitimate contractor take jobs from a retailer.  Why?  Because they don't pay much.  Speed is the most important thing to them, along with getting it done cheap so they can maximize profit.  About 10 years ago I worked on a few contracted structures (sheds, garages, etc.) from Home Depot.  They contracted to another company who then contracted people to build them.  At that time they paid a flat $250 for a contractor to pick up the supplies, build the structure on site, paint it, and use their own tools.  By the time the cost of a helper, fuel, tools, etc. was factored in there was nothing left for the contractor.  Anyway, the point I'm making is that the guy who will eventually show up to do the work will be so far down the line that everyone else has already taken the profits (Home Depot, ReBath, possibly someone else, and finally the guy working) that he probably isn't going to care what kind of job he does for you, quality or not.  He likely won't have much experience due to a high turnover rate and any experience he does have will probably be limited to his teachings at that job.  He probably can't answer any building code questions or identify other hazards once things are taken apart and he certainly won't do anything he doesn't have to while it is apart.

Another problem I've heard of repeatedly is that if (when) there is a problem there is always someone else you need to speak to.  You might have to talk to 4 or 5 different people before you can even get to someone that can address the problem.  Now multiply that due to having (at least) two separate companies involoved.  "You need to call ReBath."  "No, you need to call Home Depot."

You hire a general contractor for a reason.  We learn, understand, and keep up on building codes.  We are the one point of contact for all questions and issues on a project.  There is no manager in some other store, state, etc. to call.  You contract a GC and deal directly with that GC, or a site supervisor in some cases.  There isn't a huge chain of command to get through to reach the main decision maker for the business.  In a bathroom remodel you need someone who can do the plumbing, repair and/or move any electrical, install tile/flooring, drywall and paint, trim carpentry, and someone to coordinate all of that.  Sometimes you can find a qualified contractor to do all of those things and sometimes he will sub-contract out certain components (especially due to licensing laws) but you will always have that one definitive person to go to for any questions or issues.  A salesman in a store doesn't visit your home throughout the project to check on the status.  Even if he did, he likely wouldn't now what he is looking at.  The same goes for a retail manager.

Hire someone who specializes in taking care of your home.  Hire based on reputation & knowledge/experience.  You are right that not every customer can be happy so an occassional bad review can be found on just about any business.  Read the reviews, not the grades (they are always biased).  Look to see if the contractor attempted to rectify the problem, not ignore it.  Lastly, unless you want cheap, sloppy work and a whole heap of other troubles, don't hire based on a low price.

?

You gave a good description, but without seeing some photos and maybe even the space itself it would still just be a guess.

A few years ago we replaced a significant load bearing beam to raise it up a foot in the new kitchen.  It was nearly 17' long with a new LVL beam.  For us this was pretty reasonable.  The LVL was about $250.  And maybe 12-15 2x6s, to temporarily support the ceiling joists, were probably like another $75.  The labor was $800.  There was also some finish work done afterward, but that was worked into a much bigger job for the entire floor.

Technically speaking, it is likely that you need to have something spec'd out by an engineer or architect, to calculate load, etc.  I don't know your area but in most places "a mere contractor, GC, or carpenter" is probably not allowed to just rip out a load-bearing wall without someone who is qualified to do the load calculations (which will be VERY conservative.  A brand new LVL will be VASTLY stronger than it really needs to be, but it won't be expensive.  The typical contractor will be like "hey we'll sister up two 2x12s", and not really know if that'll do the trick or not.  I'm not saying that all guys are like that, but ... it is what it is.

What you are talking about is probably at least a bit more involved and I'd love to give a good estimate but it's hard to say without a better understanding of the space.

You may be looking at $1500 - $3500?  It depends on too many specifics that we just can't know without a bunch of photos, and maybe even opening up a wall or ceiling to see exactly how temporary supports could be installed, and where the permanent beam/header could be placed and properly supported.  Your span isn't all that big so if at all possible I would do it without columns - it'll be much nicer.

If I were you I would first have a quick consultation with a "professional engineer".  They are qualified to calculate load etc - and cost a lot less than a full architect.  In my experience, an engineer just wants to provide a quick, proper solution without a lot of extra BS.  My experience with architects has been less than favorable.  Too much drama and expense and he actually spec'd things wrong and my carpenter had to pick up on it.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.  Good luck!!!

Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
?
What I always ask my customers regarding this question when remodeling bathrooms is how good they will be about maintaining and cleaning the new bathroom, especially when the old bathroom is obviously neglected.  If you are one of those people who wipes the glass down after a shower and cleans your bathroom every week or two you really don't need to spend the extra money.  If you are at the other end of the spectrum and clean it when it finally bothers you enough it may not be a bad investment.  I've had customer tell me they can tell a difference compared to their old glass without it and others say it made no difference at all.

We purchased an Angie's list deal for a custom kitchen design - waste of money! The man who came was unable to give us any new ideas or useful suggestions for the remodel. He was able to give us estimates on costs and answer most questions about different materials. We expected a designer to help us create a remodeling plan and instead paid for ...More a contractor to give us a quote.

and his crew were a pleasure to deal with. The project evolved as we were moving along, and was very flexible in adding a few extra things, and just getting things done in a timely manner. The added extras were added to the invoice as well, but at a reasonable cost. The work required several visits, as ...More it was mixed with other contractors coming in and out, and waiting for certain materials to arrive.
's crew even moved inside the cabinets delivered by Home Depot on a cold winter day (while Home Depot delivery is curbside only), and moved appliances to right spots in the kitchen as the US IG installers (Home Depot company installing the cabinets) needed this done but were not willing to do it due to "liability reasons". The final invoice price I owed was reduced to account for credit on some work that considered already included in the labor on another invoice - very reasonable.
Needless to say whom I will call next time when I need work done at my house. All the work was done professionally, and overall I am very happy with the result. Pricing was reasonable and fair in comparison to competitors.

This was a large upmarket residential renovation totaling well over $100,000. The general contractor, did an excellent job. The project took approximately 4 months from start to finish. It was directly managed by company owner . This man was extremely detail and quality oriented and his expert crew worked ...More hard to meet his (and our) expectations to make sure every aspect of the project was done right. If, on the rare occasion it wasn't done right, it was done over. We provided most of the design and high-end finish materials on the interior, while provided all of the labor and structural materials necessary. This arrangement worked well for both of us. Other than holidays and weekends the crew showed up virtually every workday for 4 months straight. Unbelievable! We are not new to home renovation and have seen the good, the bad and the ugly of the general contracting world. We were prepared to struggle with such a large renovation, but came thru as one of the most professional operations I have ever observed. When the rare problem came up, it always came with a solution attached. Since we were living in the house with 3 noisy dogs during the entire project, consideration on everybody's part was essential. The crew almost always took adequate time out at the end of each work day to clean up the site understanding it was somebody's home. My experience has not always been good in this regard. Since time is money in the contracting world, the daily clean-up often gets the short shrift. Not with this company. The only part of the huge project not done by was the new heating system, otherwise he did everything necessary to take a very dated and worn 1972 colonial (needing EVERYTHING) and make its interior shine like 2014. We could have hired a less expensive contractor (be aware is not the cheap seats), and some of the extras were a little more expensive than expected. But value is always the intersection of price and quality. In this case, we achieved the highest value we could have ever expected. Thank you Angie's List!!

Plumber arrived exactly on time. I had purchased the wrong type of replacement disposal. He was able to get one that day and install it. Very efficient. Expensive but I appreciated the excellent service. I would call again for plumbing service.

The sad part is I originally hired . Remodel to do a quick remodel job on a bathroom in my house and they did a fantastic job. So good in fact that I hired them to do a much larger bathroom remodel in our house.
After signing off on the estimate in late May, I was told the earliest he could get it done was in late August. ...More August came and went and I was asked if he could push it off until Early October which I relented on. (Note that specific dates were never used, just generalities)
Early October came and went without a phone call. After leaving him multiple voicemails and an email I finally received an email on October 15th that he couldn't do the job for us.
So at this point I've waited five months to be told by that he couldn't do this job.
Now I have to find someone else on the 15th of October. Extremely frustrating.

Everything about this purchase was unsatisfactory.
1) I called to find out if they had remnants for sale and asked where they were located and verified hours. I drove (20+ minutes) and arrived to find the remnant yard (area behind the back of the store) virtually under water. It had rained all morning and there were deep puddles. Obviously, ...More I don't expect them to have perfect drainage but it would seem reasonable that the person who answered the phone when I called to make my inquiry would mention that the slabs were on view outside. (I, naively, had expected them to be in a warehouse.) When I arrived I was told it would be impossible to walk through the 3-4 inches of water pooled outside. They told me to come back on a sunnier day. No apology.
2) I returned to look at remnants with my husband. No one was particularly interested in offering suggestions, advice, or help. It's very hard to know what a piece of granite looks like when it is standing sideways with other huge pieces in front and behind. There is no way to actually get a good look at anything. Frustrating but no pictures, samples, or help. The woman who helped us was pleasant but not particularly interested.
3) Chose a piece and paid a 50% deposit.
4) Finally to make an appointment to get a template cut. (Time gap because of death in the family and constant travel) Rep came out and measured and said the countertop would be ready in about 2 weeks.
5) After 3 weeks I called and asked where the countertop was and was told it was scheduled for installation in 4 days but the appt would be cancelled if I didn't pay the balance. Curious. No one had called me to say that I was scheduled and no one had asked me for the balance. I called back the next day with a CC. I mentioned that I was wondering how they were going to cut out the sink hole since they had not asked for the sink when they were at my house. The CSR said the rep should have asked for it so that the cutting could be done in the workroom. She warned that it would be dusty if they did the work at my house. She wanted me to drive the sink to their work site (another town 30 minutes away). I said "no, I don't have the time. I'll live with the dust". Some 20 minutes later another CSR from called to say that my countertop installation had been scheduled and that they needed my CC. I explained that I had just been through this. I had one more call asking for the same info. No one there knows what anyone else is doing. Either that, or the person who handles the bookkeeping doesn't keep records of what she's doing.
6) When the countertop was delivered I was not home so I couldn't monitor the installation. My husband was there but not involved.
7) The front of the countertop was very nicely finished except that there was a 1/4" diameter chunk missing from the left front corner and the back looked as if it had been cut with a jagged saw and the left and right borders were not straight. I called the company to complain and they sent a repair crew a few days later. I was given a 2 hour work window and they arrived 15 minutes after the end of that time. I realize that lifting granite is hard work but there is no excuse for anyone looking as ragged and unprofessional as this crew. (Actually, 2 sat in the truck while 1 worked. ) His pants were torn and his t shirt was dirty, He filled in the gaps with a rust colored putty, left scraps on the floor, a razor on the sink, and on the countertop.
8) No one from the company ever called to see if the job had been completed or fixed. No one is service oriented. No one is pleasant. No one is thorough. No one cares.
9) In total we spent over $576 for this single vanity countertop. It will never look really finished because the jagged edges could not be corrected. However, I had no recourse because they had all my $ in advance.
10) We worked with a tile supplier, a glass shower door supplier/installer, a carpenter, and an electrician for this job. All were courteous, helpful, pleasant, and clean EXCEPT for . Maybe they should try Customer.

this company was good; gave me a good layout of my kitchen so the price of 50 dollars was well worth it; i would have prefered something three-dimensional and in color so i could visualize it more clearly;
i have not decided who will do the actual job yet; i am looking into several avenues since my budget is small and ...More most places want to spend more than i am able to at this juncture and in this condo. but overall a good rating

It went very well overall. is a meticulous worker. He usually works by himself on smaller projects and wants to get it done right. The whole process took about 2 weeks. He offered his advice when I asked for it, compared notes on what I liked and wanted, and was able to find less expensive products of the same things I found ...More in store--often of greater quality. It took a little bit longer than some contractors but he got it done right for a great price. He was honest and clear about his work and his charges were fantastic comparatively.
