Providence dance instructors discuss getting the right steps

What styles of dancing do you teach?

Theresa Landry: "For adults, we offer ballet and tap classes."

Katie Caramiciu: "Tap or jazz classes are available."

Elaine Colaneri: "We offer tap, jazz, ballet and hip-hop."

What's your favorite dance and why?

Theresa Landry: "My favorite dance has always been tap. I just love that style of dancing."

Katie Caramiciu: "Lyrical contemporary is my favorite. It gives you the most range to express yourself."

Elaine Colaneri: "My strongest love is for tap dancing. It's been my favorite since I was a child."

How do you charge for dance lessons and what's the cost?

Theresa Landry: "A private one-hour lesson is $35. A half hour is $18. Or you can join a class for $10."

Katie Caramiciu"For $48 a month, you can take one weekly class."

Elaine Colaneri: "The average cost for one hour is $14."

Do you offer any types of packages? If so, can you give me a few examples and the price?

Theresa Landry: "No, I don't because I feel that my prices are very competitive."

Katie Caramiciu"Just the monthly deal."

Elaine Colaneri: "I offer a package of four classes for $52."

How often do you recommend your clients take a class with you? Do they need to practice outside of class?

Theresa Landry: "Some people take three classes a week, but you don't need to take that many. Should you practice? Oh my gosh, yes!"

Katie Caramiciu: "It depends on what they want. If it's just for fun, then once a week. I won't steer you away from practicing outside of class, but a lot of times, you need the instructors so you don't hurt yourself."

Elaine Colaneri: "When you deal with adults, you have to work around their schedules. I recommend starting off taking one lesson a week. I find the best place to practice tap is in the grocery store. That way you won't damage your hardwoods."

What's your busiest time of year?

Theresa Landry: "Starting right after Christmas until June."

Katie Caramiciu: "We don't really have a 'busier' time of year. September usually starts off pretty well."

Elaine Colaneri: "September starts off big, then also after the first of the year."

How do you handle the most dancing-challenged clients?

Theresa Landry: "If they're a slow learner, I'll be a slow teacher. But no one has ever been a problem before."

Katie Caramiciu: "Normally, it's not about the steps, it's about how you feel doing them. It's an art. Having fun is the most important thing."

Elaine Colaneri: "How do they know they can't dance? I think they need to try it first. There's no ending to dance. You can dance forever."
