"I was moving out of one home and storing my things with till I was ready to move into my new home. They were an hour late, but still charged" me for that time. They didn't pick-up all of the things that they were supposed to pick-up and then after the move they presented me with a bill for $900. They did not have these charges pre-approved or even let me know there would be extra charges. They ran out of moving pads and had to call the main office to have more sent over. During this time they stopped working but still charged me for this time. They now have all of my things and are holding it till I pay this exuberant fee. The deal came with 3 months of storage for free, they then started charging me $49.67 a month. Again without notifying me they started charging me $200 a month. When I asked about this fee, they said it was a promotion and that the promotion was over. They said this was in the agreement but no where is this stated. Definitely the worst service provider on Angie's List.

"Over the weekend I was with a group of 6 people with trucks that were helping a widow move her items out of a storage unit in . We had the" trucks lined up and were going to start loading them. A man " " from the office came rushing over in a mobile scooter and started yelling at us. He almost ran over a 5 year old in our party. When we told him to be careful he told everyone in the party to get off his private property and that he was calling the police. We told him it was fine if he called the police and that we would leave. Everyone got in their vehicles and started to leave as requested and he closed the gates and locked everyone in. He wanted on the other side of the gate in his scooter mocking everyone in trucks. We told him at this point you cannot lock people into this storage facility. The police officer showed up and helped get the gates open and told us we had done nothing wrong and allowed us to finish moving this widow (who was with us and had gone into the office to explain details about to other workers in the office). The new owner of this business is and I would imagine he would be horrified by the way the volunteer movers were treated on Saturday December 6th 2014. Among the volunteers moving this widows property was a real estate agent and a mortgage broker and I can assure you they plan to share this experience with every client they have. I want to share this story and frankly am horrified that this worker chose to close the gate and lock in the patrons waiting for police. Buyer beware. I saw several other storage facilities along the same road so I would recommend any potential clients move along to the next storage facility along that stretch. Stay far away from . Thankfully all the widows items were safely to her garage and she will be able to end her relationships with this facility.

Storage Units & Services

Renting a storage unit may seem like a confusing process, but we’ve outlined the steps you should take in order to find the perfect fit. From determining the type of self-storage you need, to how much you can expect to pay, the Angie’s List Guide to Storage Units covers all the right stuff (in a climate controlled area, of course).

Hello, this is Kyle K from the Member Care Department.

Although Angie's List doesn't provide info on average or "going rates" for various projects, when members and consumers submit reviews, they have the option to include that cost of the project.

With that in mind, one way to find out a very general price range on a project is to log on to www.AngiesList.com (http://www.angieslist.com/?CID=ANS) and search for "Moving" (or any other appropriate category for your project, such as remodeling - K&B or ceramic tile), and then look at the project cost info supplied by local members and consumers.

Of course, probably the best way to get the most accurate cost information is to request multiple bids from several contractors. As the price will vary with work site considerations and individual contractors' approaches, getting multiple estimates will help provide a clearer picture of what your project will cost.

I hope this information helps!

Here are the FAQ's on San Jose rent control - and only apartments and mobilehomes being rented are covered, not storage units.

http://www.sanjoseca.gov/FAQ.aspx?QID=521

More and more people are using storage units, so costs have gone up frequently and signfiicantly in the past few years.

Pretty much you are at the mercy of the market - if the market will support it, they can raise their prices - and the cleaner, newer, and higher security ones can do that easier (but also presumably protect your stuff better). Your only recourse, for lower cost, is to go with an older, shabbier looking or non-climate controlled place, build storage at your place, dedicate more of your personal space to storage, or get rid of stuff.

Hi Nancy,

This is Sarah B. in Member Care. I'm happy to help!

I was able to find several rated providers where you can rent a storage pod. For your current need though, our Snapfix specialists would also be able to do all of the dialing for you, match you up with a top rated company and arrange to have them call you to figure out the logistics. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, please fill out the form in the link below and our Snapfix Team will take it from there!

If you would like to reach out to these providers yourself, please let me know. I’d be happy to send these to you.  No matter which option you choose, I hope you’ll take the time to fill out a review when the work is done.

If you would like information on providers through this forum, please let us know. You can respond to this thread or submit a new Answers post. You can also reach us at memberservices@angieslist.com. We're happy to help, Nancy!

I am currently using a PODS storage container while working on multiple home improvement projects. While I am very pleased with the ability to store items on-site, I could not be unhappier with PODS' business practices and the lack of assistance I am receiving from their corporate office. I have a rental agreement that states a specific rate ...More per month of storage, but am being charged more (via automatic debit card payment) for every additional month I keep the unit. My order confirmation/summary of charges itemizes only one price per month of rental with absolutely NO indication that the price will climb for each additional month. PODS claims that this upcharge is mentioned on the website, yet my contract with them clearly lists only a monthly rental fee. BEWARE of dealing with PODS! I have received nothing but snarky attitudes and the runaround when contacting the corporate office for an adjustment. p.s. I used a coupon code when I signed up for PODS and was overcharged with my first payment. Fortunately, I was reimbursed for that initial overcharge with only a mild scolding for trying out various combinations of coupon codes prior to deciding which was the best value, entering my debit card information and scheduling my rental.

My overall experience with & Storage was absolutely outstanding. My employer covered the move, so I didn’t have to pay them anything. The quality of their work was excellent. They were very responsive and very professional. I would absolutely use them again. I did have a houseplant, which usually isn’t something ...More that they would move. It was sentimental and they took that into consideration. They were fantastic enough to move it, keep it at their office address, and let me pick it from there.

We are very unhappy with the way this move has been managed by this company. It is difficult to separate the pickup of goods from the storage or from the delivery of the goods so the entire company is subject to this evaluation. In our opinion, there was a *lack of coordination in evaluating our needs/desires for the move, *our furniture ...More was returned covered in dust, *lack of responsiveness to communications, *little to no acceptance of responsibility, and *abuse of staff (by not keeping sufficient folks to unload in timely manner and not using tools (e.g., appliance dollies) to assist staff. We chose this company having been told by their representative when giving us the estimate that ?pods? could be used, transported to their facility and then delivered to our new home. We thought this to be a good idea since our goods would only have to be handled twice rather than four times (loaded to truck, moved into storage, reloaded to truck, unloaded at new residence). We later learned this was not possible due to the constraints of our driveway at our home in Corvallis. A truck arrived the morning of August 24, with four staff to pack our belongings (we lived in this home for 17 yrs so there was a lot of stuff). The movers worked with humor, diligence, and coordination to pack the goods to the truck. Later in the day they were skeptical if they could fit everything to the truck they brought so asked for a second truck to be dispatched. Luckily, everything fit (without an inch to spare). However, about 30 minutes after the truck left, the 2nd truck arrived. Apparently, word had not reached the second driver not to come. Maybe this should have been an indication of the troubles (lack of communication and service) to come. The movers arrived with two trucks to our home in on November 3, 2009. One truck was a flatbed with crates while the other truck had our goods inside. There were either three or four people unloading the container truck first. What I recall is that the larger furniture was unloaded from the truck (bedroom, living, dining room furniture, including our spinet piano). Once the truck was unloaded, it left leaving just two people to unload rest of goods from the flatbed truck with the wooden crates. On the positive side, all goods that were picked up in our old home were delivered to our home. As they brought things off the truck, we were to things off the inventory list. This is a pretty chaotic process trying to keep up with the unloading and the calling out of inventory numbers. The two men worked until close to six in the evening so it was a very long day. In retrospect we should have slowed the process down to take time to look more closely as things were brought inside. It did not appear to us that they left enough staff to adequately unload the goods in a timely manner. Towards the end of the day, we were feeling badly for the two staff left. At the end of the day, we were asked to sign the inventory list and then handed a phone to respond to a survey of service. At this point, we were tired enough just to want the day to end and to get everyone out so we could leave. Again, in retrospect, we should have not accepted without a more thorough review of the goods delivered. A representative from the moving company ( ) called a couple days later asking about our move. I did appreciate the follow- through from the company. I told him that we were not very happy with the move overall at this point and we were still discovering problems. We did ask that some empty boxes be picked up. As I recall, I had to call back about a week later because there had been no response to our request for box pickup. I did then receive a call back with a commitment to pick up the boxes which did occur the same day. As we started unpacking on November 4th, we started finding problems. On November 20, I e-mailed with a preliminary list of issues/problems. We discovered our freezer that had been working in Corvallis no longer was, our bedroom furniture was scratched and a piece broken from the nightstand foot, drawers on dresser no longer worked as smoothly, and there were rubmarks on leather recliner. That further a small chest of drawers that had sewing and craft materials was not packed as promised (with shrinkwrap) to prevent loss/disorganization (I could have packed it all in a box). I also noted that generally everything that came from the truck (not in crates) was covered in a thick of dust. No response was received from my e-mail of November 20. On December 2, 2009, I again e-mailed with a follow up asking for confirmation of receipt of earlier e-mail and asking what next step would be. I also indicated that the appliance repair person we had called about the freezer indicated the compressor was out. I indicated to that the repairman indicated that freezers should always be kept upright during a move or while stored. We were making the assumption that indeed that did occur and the freezer had met its natural life and would not be seeking any compensation for damages. On December 7th, I received an e-mail reply that a claim form would be forthcoming. We forwarded a claim on January 12, 2010 to International. On that claim, we conservatively asked for compensation for: nightstand repair $100; headboard repair $25; leather recliner repair $25. We did submit photos of the headboard and nightstand damage. A letter from the Claims Adjuster dated January 15, 2010 (finally a quick response) indicating that they would not process the claim until all storage fees were paid. We responded on February 4, 2010, with a check for amount due ($248.85) Further, we asked why it had not been collected upon delivery of goods, why they had not charged our credit card (we thought we had previously given authorization), and, if nothing else, why we had NEVER been invoiced for the remaining storage fees in order to pay. By this time, we had decided that we could not repair the nightstand ourselves; that it would require a professional to make sufficiently whole in looks and structure. The estimate was $275. When sending the check for storage I forwarded the information for the amended claim and the furniture repair firm estimate. We have since paid $260 for the repair. A response was prepared on February 10th (we received on February 18th) with a check in the amount of $25.00 for damage to leather recliner. Our claim for the nightstand and headboard was disallowed because we did not make notation as the furniture was delivered. Why liability was accepted for the recliner is a mystery. (Note: When we pulled out the nightstand to further investigate our options for repair, we saw a significant scratch on side. I noted this on amended claim without going back to original inventory list. In letter of February 10th from Claims Adjuster, we were referred to that inventory list which does show a scratch was noted. I would suggest the scratch was put on nightstand while they were breaking down bed. We purchased this bedroom set while living in the house we moved from, it was sitting in same place for number of years and only moved briefly for cleaning and painting of wall. I don't see how it could have been scratched to that degree by any action undertaken by us prior to the move). We have been professionally moved three previous times. We understand that things happen, scratches occur, things are damaged. What we have never experienced was the degree of ineptitude on the part of this moving and storage company.

I thought that the pods concept was a great idea, but I was displeased by the company that is actually located in Florida. The pod arrived and was picked up on time. My problem was with billing. While I was online banking, I noticed that I had been billed twice the day before for the same amount with the same transaction number. I called the company ...More and they said that I was only billed once. Then I called my bank. They said I had to wait until my pending transactions were posted before I could complain. Today I saw that both transaction were posted and had to file a complaint. I'm not sure why the PODS company didn't resolve this problem.

This price is per month. They are convenient and close to home. They also offer a better price than one other company. However, I did not grade price because I did not get any other quotes. We have not had any problems. They are friendly and nice. I will use them again in the future and would recommend them to others.

This is a great idea. Having the unit in my driveway for several days meant I could load it in the evenings after work and, best of all, I didn't have to make dozens of trips back and forth to a storage unit or rent a truck and try to do it all at once. My things were in good shape with no damage when delivered to my new home. However, I would ...More not use them again. The service is fine but their billing system is a mess. In the two months I was dealing with PODS, I twice went into the web site to schedule a pick-up or delivery and got a message that I was overdue on a payment and I HAD NEVER BEEN SENT A BILL. I paid on line immediately each time but I will not deal with any company that lists you as overdue before sending you a bill. My credit rating is important to me and I fear that a billing system as out of as the PODS system could harm my credit rating. It's not worth it. I'll find another company next time.

Great. No problems. was easy to deal with when we made reservations. She had intelligent answers to our questions. She knew our neighborhood because the company is local. The delivery guys were helpful both times in figuring out where to put the vaults. They showed up on time all four times. Nothing was broken.

This is a great idea, but the company is a national company who refuses to provide local contacts to customers. I scheduled the POD weeks in advance and was told I needed to keep a four-hour window open. I committed to an a.m. delivery then kept the entire a.m. free so I could be here. They never called to confirm as the day neared, so I called their ...More national toll free number and of course never spoke to anyone who could give me information. At 6:00 the night before the move I received a pre-recorded message saying it would be delivered in the p.m. The configuration of our street is odd so I really needed to be here to eyeball the location for the POD. Since I couldn't be here they used their judgment and placed the POD in the worst possible location. The frustrating thing is that you can only speak to a national call center located who knows where, they will refuse to provide you with a local contact and refuse to commit that they will communicate with the local contact.
