"We should have ignored all the bright shiny “A” ratings on Angie’s List and paid more attention to the lone review posted on Yelp on 10/17/2014" by another
customer: “There (
) customer service is dreadful”. http://www.yelp.com/biz/
-clackamas Hands down,
is the worst contractor we have dealt with. Ever. Their customer service is horrendous. I can’t for the life of me reconcile the “A” ratings on Angie’s List with the
we experienced. I cannot in all honestly recommend this contractor. We have three main areas of concern: The first relates to
’s promise to “cover and protect.” Our central air conditioner unit is located under the
, in a “drop zone”, an area that was designated for discarding the old roof. The roofers neither “covered” nor “protected”, but instead dumped roofing debris (LOTS of it) directly onto the A/C. The top of the A/C isn’t sealed, one can look down into it and see the fan and other sensitive electrical equipment. So dumping debris on top of an A/C is a really bad idea. During his sales pitch, the salesman took a picture of the A/C in order to, supposedly, alert the roofers to its existence. Not that they couldn’t have clearly seen it with their own eyes. Had we not been home they would have discarded the entire roof onto it. We should not have had to ask the roofers to protect the A/C, or to protect the large and rather obvious window immediately next to it, which was also being hit by falling debris. The second relates to the unspoken assumption that
, as a business whose main purpose in life is to protect your home from water damage, will in fact secure your home against water damage during the project. At the end of the day on Saturday the roofers left for the weekend, to return Monday morning. We subsequently popped our heads into the attic to check things out and were alarmed to see a large gap in the roof next to a vent stack where the old flashing had been removed but the new flashing had not yet been installed. No rain was predicted for the weekend, but this is Portland, and there were rain clouds passing over much of the day Sunday, and if it had rained water would have poured unabated into the attic. And I suspect nobody would have been sitting around to answer
’s phone had we needed to contact them between Saturday night and Monday morning. There really is no acceptable reason for leaving a customer's house vulnerable to water damage. Our third concern relates to
’s promise to “clean the gutters” and to “reinstall gutter guards to preexisting condition.” When the project was over the roofers were supposed to clean the gutters and re-secure our plastic gutter screens to the gutter. Using a little homeowner ingenuity and a very long pole, we were able to take photos of the roof and saw that many of the gutter screens had not been secured onto the gutters. Then last week there was a rainstorm, the first rain since the new roof was installed. The gutters and downspouts overflowed severely. The next day we found a stream of roofing debris that had washed down through the downspouts – nails, pieces of shingles, and lots of roofing grit. Clearly the gutters had not been cleaned. I
’t get it…. The roofers look into the gutters and see nails and shingles and roofing garbage and think, what, that that’s "ok"? Early and often we emailed and telephoned our concerns to
. By telephone we asked to speak to owner
but were deflected from doing so. In emails we asked for our concerns to be passed on to him but we never heard from him. There has been an absolute lack of concern by
for any of the issues we have communicated to them. The essence of their response has been this: “Thank you very much for the feedback, we use all feedback for training purposes to be sure the same issues
’t arise again.” That’s your response? That’s not customer service. That's a total lack of appreciation for legitimate complaints being raised by a paying customer. On August 4th someone from
is scheduled to come by to fix the gutter problems. Given our experience thus far we
’t have much faith that they will Make it Right, but we are hoping we are wrong. We would welcome a phone call from
regarding these matters and, especially, an in-person visit by him on the 4th to ensure the work is done properly.

"Two years ago I bought an older house with cedar siding that was worn and at minimum in desperate need of painting. As part of a neighborhood promotion, the
" salesman RJ
visited me in my home and explained the Preservation line of products handled by
. I hadn't been considering vinyl siding because my mental image of vinyl was of something thin and weak with ugly seams, but RJ explained the new products are quite different. He had siding sample pieces, color selector and information as to durability, energy efficiency, installation certification, life-time warranties (of materials and installation) and the like. All of which sounded very good. I was most intrigued by what they call the hand-split shake style because, though neither RJ nor the web site offered a picture or an address of a house that I could visit with that exact style siding installed, the sample really did have the
and look of hand split shake. RJ did a quick estimate of cost to re-side my house and I signed the contract. There were a couple of minor miscommunications e.g. I did not realize initially that I would need to have the molding around my windows and doors "wrapped" to accomplish the look I was after so adding that to the contract increased the cost some. But overall the company was very flexible and accommodating. I was able without penalty or quibble to change my mind on the colors a couple of times and postpone the project start date by three weeks due to visiting family. The actual labor was done by Alside installers
and
. They were hard workers, very conscientious, clearly knowledgeable about the product they were installing and did a beautiful job. It took a bit less than two weeks. It seemed longer for all the pounding and the fact that the back yard was not really usable for all the clutter of equipment and materials. But that was the nature of the job. And though I still find a few nails and small snippets of siding the guys did an admirable job of cleaning up afterwards. Mostly I am just quitr pleased with the final result.

?
Wow, i aum surprised you didn't get 10 answers already with roofers say X was the best or N was the best or A was the best. In reality you are focusing on the WRONG THING!

5 estimates? Why 5? Why would you do that to yourself? Normally if you are dealing with reputable companies you don't need more than 2 estimates. I advocate to people to always get at least two estimates and if the roofers are saying something very different or if the roofers are way way way off in price, get an equalizer, get a 3rd.  Obviously if you don't trust a roofer disqualify that roofer immediately.  I beliee you have now fallen into "Analysis Paralysis" which is what happens when you have too many opions.

But back to the topic, I said you are focusing on the wrong thing. Why did I say that? Because you can take the best shingle in the world and if installed wrong is compeltely garbage. i can take the worst shingle, known to fail, and if installed properly will last some ammount of time. So you should focus on the roofer, not the product. The roofer is more important and a good quality roofer will only want to install good quality product.

The roof is a system comprised of many components, not just the shingles. You have the water proofing underlayment such as ice shield, the water resistant underlayments such as felt. You have the shingles, the ventilation and the flashing details. All of these things add up to equal one roof. Neglect one and your roof is doomed to fail.

But the roof is more than just product it is detail, know how and heart. Heart? yes heart. It takes the utmost CARING the utmost DESIRE to want to install a good roof. It's hard work and easy to fall into the train of thought as to do what's easier, instead of what's faster.  Faster and easier seldom ever equals better. At the end of the day you ened a roofer that cares about your roof.

So what product is best? That's hard to say. Each manufacturer has multiple plants and it seems each plant puts out varying levels of quality. I will tell you in my area Atlast is known as a cheap commodity shingle. I have Tamko Heritage on my house but I stopped using it because I was having seal failue issues and at the time they offered no contractor certification program, but I hear they started up one. Ownes corning is a decent product backed by a great company. I don't install very many OC's though. I primarily install CertainTeed Landmark shingles and my feeling is that they are the best on the market in my area. I'm sure others will disagree with me.

But don't miss the point, the roofer is more important than the shingle.
?
I appreciate the fact that with homeowners like you who want to beat the insurance co out of deductibles, so then my rates and every other homeowners rates can also go up just to save you.....Thanks for NOTHING..[8o|]
?

Any roofer worth using should be able to do the roof with NO MONEY DOWN.

The only scenario I would ask for a deposit is on a crazy odd ball shingle that had to be special ordered.

?
The question was, Can it be done? The answer is yes. The real question is "Should" it be done? The answer is, no, not unless it is an emergency.   But also let's clarify winter, because we are having a pretty mild winter, so there's kinda not a problem this year so far. I'll refrence "below freezing" from this point forward.

As a certified and licensed roofing contractor, my reputation is on the line. I debate this topic quite often with other roofing contractors who seem to care more about profit than a job well done.  Well, I can tell you from past experience having been a professional roofer for 14 years as of the time of this posting, that the chance for failure increases exponentionally when installed below freezing.  It's better just not to risk it.

Personally I will not, unless absolutely necessary and the customer signs a disclaimer of limited liability, install a roof below freezing and really really want to install the roof at 40 or above. The shingles need to seal, and will not seal unless they warm to about 70 degrees F ambient temprature. This does not mean it needs to be 70 outside, because the shingles will warm from the sun.

So what can be done to install the roof below freezing? Well first, the roof should not be gun nailed below freezing. This is because the shingles become brittle and it's easier to "blow through" with your nails. It's also harder to regulate air pressure when it is cold, I speculate because of barometric pressures, but I am just guessing.  Therefore the roof should be hand nailed. This takes more time. Furthermore since the seal strips will not seal, they must be manually sealed with proper compatible adhesives. This will also take more time, and more material. I once spoke with a roofer in Alaska who builds tents around the houses he is working on and covers them with tarps and heats with propane heaters.  Now that takes real time!    The question is, are you prepared to pay for this extra time? Can you wait a few more weeks?

My wife and I were very impressed right from the start. On the first day,
Portland Roofing Contractors Provider Name Locked
(the salesman) climbed all over our roof, photographed everything, explained all of our issues thoroughly, explained the approach we could expected, gave us a projected date (were we to accept their bid), and even fixed some loose shingles we had at the time.
Portland Roofing Contractors Provider Name Locked
even explained that they may not be the cheapest bid we would get (which they weren't). After contacting two other roofers, we settled with
Portland Roofing Contractors Provider Name Locked
and are very glad we did. Prior to the project, two men showed up, climbed up into our then 90+ degree attic, and covered all of our stored items with tarps to protect them from falling debris. When the project started, the crew showed up at 8:00 AM as promised and set to work. The crew,

They usually broke around noon for about an hour for lunch. Other than that, they we on the the job working hard. We have been home owners in this area for over 40 years and this was one of the best crews that have ever worked on projects for us. They were reliable, pleasant to us and our neighbors, considerate of all (particularly our neighbors). They cleaned up every night prior to leaving so that we could move around our yard.
Portland Roofing Contractors Provider Name Locked
was in contact with me daily throughout the job, making sure all was going as expected and soliciting feedback on any aspect of anything that I had questions about. Overall, we could not have asked for a better job. Technically we are not roofing experts, but we expect that when the rains finally return this fall, we will be quite pleased with everything they have done.

Got the usual 3 quotes and they were right in there with the two cheapest. Top roof went swimmingly with a very respectful and polite crew who cleaned up the place well. Originally we thought we could take the front roof back 6 or 8 feet and re-enforce the sagging
Portland Roofing Contractors Provider Name Locked
. Unfortunately the old roof was put together so badly in our 100 year old house there was not choice but to rebuild from scratch. That was the point we were really happy we had hired a full service roofing company that had an in-house framers etc. It took a week to figure out what needed to be done and, of course, solve all the little problems that crop up when you start opening up

and wall son a hundred year old house. So
Portland Roofing Contractors Provider Name Locked
gave me a quote to fix the back roof and kept to it despite all the new little challenges that cropped up. Also I want to mention they dealt with the venting issues on all the roofs in a clean and creative way which reassured us the house might stay up another 100 years. As usual with a job like this this there were a few minor problems but
Portland Roofing Contractors Provider Name Locked
and his crew were super responsive to any issues we had and backed up their workmanship 100%. In the end from the roofers to the framers to the gutter guys to the painters we were very pleased with how the work came out in the end and would totally recommend these folks for any job

I obtained a roof estimate from
Portland Roofing Contractors Provider Name Locked
a couple of years ago and declined it's bid.
Since then I have received countless calls, letters, knocks on my door and flyers hung on my house pleading my business. It is constant!
I have requested repeatedly
Portland Roofing Contractors Provider Name Locked
stop contacting me because there is no possibility I would ever do business with this company.
A few weeks ago I warned that another contact from them will result in my filing a complaint.
Yesterday I found a large 17"x7" bright flyer hanging on my front door.
What better way to alert potential burglars I was not home!
How do I get this company to stop harassing me?
PS: I accepted a bid and will have my roofs completed next week so that will probably stop
Portland Roofing Contractors Provider Name Locked
from harassing me, I hope!

Portland Roofing Contractors Provider Name Locked
was very friendly and was good with our dogs, who were not on their best today.
Portland Roofing Contractors Provider Name Locked
provided us with a free estimate and discussed the options with us. He was knowledgeable and professional.
He began by measuring all our windows and was able to notice specific concerns that could have raised the cost during instillation like the dry rotted window frame in our attic and bathroom. His experience as a contractor was clear and he was sensitive to my ascetic concerns around putting new windows in an older home like ours. I particularly appreciated that he was able to break down the cost of the job so we could look at breaking down the process and stage it out by priority.
I appreciated how much he obviously believes in the product he is putting forward and like the fact that the business is local and the instillation is covered for the life of the home.

The material (lots of plywood) arrived on Saturday. The crew arrived right on time Monday morning. The workers were professional, well organized and cooperative. The work progressed without delay or mess. They worked well with us to permit access and deliveries. Clean-up was regular - we never had piles of trash in the yard or on the street. Our solar collectors for heating the pool (also 20+ years old) was removed and replaced with only minor difficulties. Workmanship and qualities exceeded our expectations.

I've got nothing but praise for the entire staff of
Portland Roofing Contractors Provider Name Locked

Highly recommended! (This probably sounds like a fake review. You'll just have to take my word for it!)
