Portland Custom Frames Reviews

"We have worked with several members of the team in years past for parts of the remodeling of our house. Concerning this project, we first talked with
Portland Custom Frames Provider Name Locked
about a simpler shed

. He then gave us a very reasonable bid. When the plans were worked and reworked, the engineer was consulted, and we decided on a bigger, more complicated
Portland Custom Frames Provider Name Locked
, the price went up significantly. We were very concerned.
Portland Custom Frames Provider Name Locked
worked with us diligently to reduce costs to an amount we could live with without taking away too much from the plans! Work started on time, was completed within our timeline, good quality work, and we are very happy with the outcome! It was a pleasure to work with this company. Special kudos go to

and his team of workers. In fact, everyone is young, but knowledgeable, very kind and sensitive to our needs as homeowners, and really fun to work with.

"Sandy &
Portland Custom Frames Provider Name Locked
responded promptly to our request for a bid. I explained generally what I wanted and they made suggestions and took it from there. The entire project went smoothly and we were kept informed of progress and schedule changes. They built us a beautiful patio cover that looks as if it is original to the house. They cleaned up and removed all debris quickly. We are very happy with the result. I now consider them as my house contractors and they are the first people I call if I have an issue with the home.

"The most recent work, correcting a previous owner's atrocious garage roof repair, was very straightforward. He inspected, gave me an estimate, and a date to start. Not knowing if there would be more damage that couldn't be seen,
Portland Custom Frames Provider Name Locked
promised to get it finished in a week at most, but with no more bad news, the work was done in two days and they found a few more ways to reduce materials costs. So the total cost was below estimate by over 10%, and this winter I won't have to worry about the bad old "repair" giving way.

"Both projects went smoothly and very quickly.
Portland Custom Frames Provider Name Locked
's crew is very efficient and quick. They got the job done in a very timely manner and did a very good job. He communicates well and often so I always knew what the status of the job was and he was accommodating. He is great to work with when brainstorming how to get something done in a cost effective way and works well with architects who "get" construction. His prices are reasonable for the quality of work...he is not the lowest bidder but he is not the highest either but for the quality of the work and the knowledge that the job will be done right, I would choose to pay a little more anyway. I would definitely use him again."

"My first visit to their new location and was greeted promptly with a smile. They went over several designs with me until we decided on the perfect frame, mitting etc. They did not hurry me at all and had many possibilities. Framing was finished 2 days early and they called. Item picked up and I'm thrilled."

"
Portland Custom Frames Provider Name Locked
was easy to work with on the phone, very upfront about when he could work us in to his schedule. It was a small job that took less time than he anticipated so only confusion was that we didn't start out with a clear expectation of minimum cost but he was still under his original estimate and I am/was very pleased with the value I received for the cost. The work was done safely and with an effort to stay within our budget. Super pleased and I would definitely work with him again."

"In the course of their work their work crew man handled our toolshed and partially collapsed it. They never told us what happened or even left us a note. When we found out what happened we talked to the site supervisor and he said they moved it "because it was in the way" but refused to accept responsibility for the damage. So I've been waiting for them or our association to look at the damage before I move the shed. I & E is now threatening to charge a delay to the project because they can't paint our house because the broken shed is in their way. The shed is still there because they refuse to come look and accept responsibility for any damage. Most likely it is ok, but I've been told not to move it without them there to witness any damage. So what kind of contractor is this that causes damage to homeowner property, refuses to accept responsibilty and now wants to charge a penalty for not being able to continue/finish the work?STAY AWAY FROM I & E Construction.Another association board we belong to looked at I & E and wheil they low balled the bid, we decided not to go forward with them. Boy am I glad we didn't use them on that project."

"The experience was great. I brought in the two pieces and the gentleman that helped me was very patient and knowledgable about what would work or not work. It was enjoyable trying different styles and going through the selection process. He was great about understanding my style and then applying his skill to find the perfect frames. A date was agreed upon in terms of picking up the finished product and they called a week early to advise the frames pieces were ready.
They took great care in the work and when I saw the finished products I was floored as it looked like both pieces had been in those frames forever...Both pieces were very large so the $800 price was understandable. I had also selected in one case a large frame that had an intricate detail inset piece so again got what I paid for...
I would highly recommend working with

Portland Custom Frames Provider Name Locked
is a really nice guy and the price was right, but......
Portland Custom Frames Provider Name Locked
himself was very nice and quite competent, but the guys he hired to do the actual work for me were not very skilled, played loud heavy metal on the site (my back yard!) and would tend to leave fast food trash on the site until he periodically reminded them to clean it up.
Left to their own devices, his workers didn't seem able to make good judgements. One day I walked through the framed building and noticed one of the floor joists they had installed was so rotten I could stick my finger through it. Hello, guys, do we have a problem here?
Portland Custom Frames Provider Name Locked
was very quick to have the joist replaced, but if I hadn't been vigilant it would have stayed. Also, many of the joists where poorly cut such that they didn't even contact the wood they were supposed to butt up against (almost an inch gap at times!) and
Portland Custom Frames Provider Name Locked
said "don't worry, the
Portland Custom Frames Provider Name Locked
ties are what really holds it together". They installed a piece of cedar trim for the exterior front doorway that was so chewed up it really should have been just thrown out.
Portland Custom Frames Provider Name Locked
had them replace it when I complained.
You get the picture? I got to wondering if
Portland Custom Frames Provider Name Locked
is used to building suburban tract 'homes' that are meant to be torn down in 15 years? Is this modern standard? . I'm used to remodeling old houses that were well built with good wood, so this experience was somewhat of a shock.
Portland Custom Frames Provider Name Locked
also recommended a floor installer that turned out to be so terrible I had to fire him after one day.....he got the tile spacing all wrong (claimed he didn't need to use spacers!) and I later discovered he hadn't even put mortar down under all the tiles).
In the end, just to top things off, after removing the big obvious excavation dirt, they spread and left excavation dirt (which on the bid was supposed to be hauled away) over the entire back yard up to 3 inches thick. I payed $400 for dumpster and paid a guy to hand-shovel the dirt away which was covering the back lawn. By the time the lawn was exposed again, this huge 14 foot dropbox was overflowing. I also had to take a shovel and dig out the crawlspace air vents that had been left buried under the dirt. Not the best way to end the job. I had already paid
Portland Custom Frames Provider Name Locked
in full, and I called him to tell him I'd had to haul a dropbox full of dirt off the lawn, and he never called me back to offer to compensate me.

On his own, doing straightforward stuff,
Portland Custom Frames Provider Name Locked
seemed competent, and did a good job of interpreting a complex roof plan. The house ended up straight and square and hasn't fallen down yet, but if my experience is the norm for modern construction, I'm sticking with old houses thank you.

A word of advice for first-time owners having someone build from you. Specify intact/non rotten wood to be used; all connecting pieces to actually connect without gaps; undamaged, crack-free trim; don't commit to a bid until the city has approved your final plan.

Next time I won't go for lowest bid!
