Revitalizing masonry and brick in a historic home

While searching for new homes, Brad Begle and his wife, Mary, instantly fell in love with the interior of a newly remodeled Victorian-era home in Lincoln Park. However, years of faulty repairs on the outside of the red-brick 1880s home had left the exterior in poor shape.

"Jozo Karlovic, the owner of
Portland Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
, did an amazing job installing a new stone facing on my floor-to-ceiling fireplace. Several years ago, my remodeler hired a mason to face the fireplace with manufactured stone. The blocks of stone went up very quickly but I thought it looked sloppy. However, I didn’t realize how really bad it was until the blocks started falling off a few years later because the mortar the mason used didn’t bond to the original brick. After the remodeler pulled the rest of the blocks off (in less than 30 minutes), I was left with a very ugly fireplace and a significant financial loss. Installing the new natural stone would have been relatively easy if Jozo had slapped it up like the first guy did. But he is an expert craftsman and meticulously ground the pieces to beautifully fit all the out-of-plumb

around the fireplace insert and sides of the adjoining bookcases while keeping the rows of stone level. He used a product other than mortar to bond the stone to the old brick and demonstrated for me how tightly it held. The result is fantastic and I couldn’t be happier with his work. "The chimney was taken down to the roofline and rebuilt using bricks from the takedown.
New bricks were used as needed to match existing bricks as much as possible.. New
flashing was installed. Jozo Karlovic is a real professional, explained his work to me,
did the work on the day promised. I'm very satisfied with the work done by

was professional, helpful and easy to work with. He demonstrated patience to ensure that what was bid would match what was in my head. The drainage solution really worked! We had had 2" of water where our patio now is. After some heavy rains, we're confident that what they installed works. I also want to add that the walls and patio that were constructed were designed aesthetically and with high craftsmanship standards.

was also good to work with. Everyone showed up to work when expected. We are happy with the results!

"When you need to rebuild a chimney atop a steep
Portland Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
roof, you should fully trust the craftsman who will climb the roof and build that structure--you're unlikely to climb up there to check the work. Not only can the work be shoddy but the mess that is left behind (and in the gutters) can be a problem--read Angie's List to see what I mean.
I fully trusted Jozo, an incredibly talented, conscientious craftsman.
He meticulously planned his approach, building the necessary structures to reach the chimney, was very careful in taking the chimney down, and masterfully and beautifully rebuilt the chimney which will be good for another 50 years.
He cleaned up after himself and I trusted him with the roof and the copper gutters.
He's a modest man who is not self-aggrandizing or self-promoting. I will gladly do that for him and I highly recommend him.
Also, his stucco job in the garage was skillful and well done.

"Mr.
Portland Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
spent a fair amount to time with me, looking at two jobs. One of them he said was not a masonry job--that he could make things look nicer but that the cost of his coming for his minimum of 3 hours was pretty spendy for just making things look better and that it was not going to solve the problem.
On the other job he wrote out a bid and had it to me within 48 hours via email. It was in the middle, price wise, of two other bids I got. He scheduled the job about a week out. He said he would be there at 7:30 a.m. and he was there 15 minutes early. He and his worker worked very hard and efficiently. He was gone by noon.
The chimney is on the equivalent of a third floor with a fairly steep roof in an area that is hard to see. He set up good scaffolding, was extremely careful, working on a somewhat uneven and slightly slanted area. To the extent that I can see, the job is well done.
The work site was left clean.
I think I may have a tendency to ruffle the

of some contractors--and I felt I had to step back a bit to keep from doing that with this one. Just my perception, which may not be accurate.
I would hire him again if I needed other work done.

"The first time i used them, they sent a team out to inspect my chimney and heating vents. They discovered that my chimney was cracked and missing a few bricks. They gave me an estimate. I hired them to come back and do the work. They fixed and swept the chimney, replaced the bricks, and cleaned my heating vents. The second time, the person on the phone was able to ask me how my heating vents I had and told me what I should expect the price for cleaning them to be. Once again, the team was nice, quick, and did not leave a mess behind. I will continue to use this company.

"These people are incredibly artistic and at the same time very practical and good at problem solving on the spot. Our front entry required stone and stone steps - several issues came up with the design they were furnished and they did an absolutely beautiful job problem solving on the spot and creating a lovely entry . The entry to our house is quite a bit better looking due to the stone porch and steps. We had them do stone work at our last house as well. While it may seem initially that the pricing is high the quality of the work is extraordinary and i have no regrets as I stayed in first house 16 years and may stay in this one for the rest of my life. They schedule and come as planned and don't leave anything undone etc. When one of our steps was damaged due to other work on the property they came promptly and did a first rate job putting in a new stone - it doesn't even look like anything happened. This is a group of real craftsmen! I found them very enjoyable as well.

"Exterior Remodel/Landscape
We recently remodeled our front and north side exterior. We removed the driveway and apron and concrete walkway (60’) on north side of house and added a 50’wall along front with three columns.
We got four bids: The Wall,

Landscape Services, Systems Pavers and

Brick (

). We chose

Brick – they were not the lowest bid, but their process was different. After removing all concrete, they laid a new concrete slab down and added the pavers on top of the gravel/concrete pad. We felt this process better and the result was better than expectations. Their attention to detail is excellent.
We would recommend

"I called two chimney places while I was at work. I was concerned because there was water leaking down the chimney in a finished attic room where I had recently had the ceiling and walls sheetrocked. One of the places never called back.
Portland Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
called me right back on his cell phone while he was on someone else's roof working on their chimney. He came over that afternoon and said he thought the whole chimney looked like it needed to be rebuilt. But he suggested that we just put a cap on the flue, which would be much cheaper, and if that worked, it would save me the expence of a chimney rebuild. He also said that if the cap didn't do the trick he would apply the price of the cap towards the cost of rebuilding the chimney. So far we've had heavy rains and no leaking. "
