Their design process was exceptional. I was what you might call a "highly involved client" and I think we did near 30 re-draws and several joint visits to tile, appliance and other supply companies. Any time I contacted them with thoughts, ideas, input, the response was "we'll keep working on it until you think it's perfect". We did! They were also very welcoming of my desire to keep anything that was still functional, like our appliances, even if it was a bit more work figuring out how to work them in.
The construction process is never easy, especially a family of 4 living without a kitchen for a few months. CDR was the first to tell us that speed is not their speciality. They work with great subs and give them room not to be on top of one another. That was hard and the finish date was extended a few times. But having seen many other people's construction sites, CDR's commitment to cleanliness, communications, quality and details was exemplary. I had a couple of freak-outs during the process, one in particular where my single slab fireplace mantle was finished by the outside company in a way I didn't like.
Towards the end of our remodel we had a significant tragedy happen in our personal life that made things even more stressful so we kind of dropped out of communication. I did want fireplace wall built-ins that were handcrafted but was convinced by CDR to do custom manufactured, and in the end I would have preferred handcrafted with all it's imperfections. I think they are used to clients who want perfect and things like adjustable shelves instead of fixed shelves. I get it, but based on their marketing I thought handcrafted would have been their first choice. Those built-ins are probably the only thing I would do differently, but everyone who comes to our home loves what we have. At the time, with all life's stresses piling up I freaked out about that and again they stayed super professional and responsive, which I really respect. Again the response was always, "We want you to love it" and they really meant it.
I recommend CDR highly.
After excessive delays and persistently poor communication, we elected to choose another contractor to actually build the unit. The plans he did complete (late) gave us multiple problems with the city, delaying our project even more. We are just now breaking ground mid- , as it cost us months of delays.
Feb 9, 2014 - I send him all our initial drawings, and ask for the design contract.
Feb 17 - He finally sends design contract to us, and we execute it with down payment.
March 11 -
April 1 - still no word from
April 6 - We finally meet and he now informs me that he's booked up and cannot start in May,
"You're still near the top of my list as far as priority. I think I can work around my other projects and schedule in time to make yours work, and on time."
April 21- he completes the final drawings, and says he's going to the city the next day and will submit our drawings.
April 30 - he informs me that he didn't submit the plans, and now says he needs to get engineering involved. He now also informs me that he can't break ground in
May 6 - we discuss by email. Still hasn't submitted the plans to his engineer.
May 28 - finally turns over completed work to my new contractor.
Bottom line - I think
I was almost not going to post this overwhelmingly negative review.............except that the design/plans that he completed have given us a h*** of a time with the city. They were incomplete, missing information, designed in ways that weren't to code. And all this from someone who focuses exclusively on
Our next meeting was at my house so he could take all the measurements he would need to create the design for updating my kitchen. He was a little late for our appointment, but he called ahead of time to tell me he was running late, so I appreciated his courtesy and I didn't mind the lateness. As he measured the kitchen, he pointed out various considerations, and he took a lot of pictures to reference while he was creating the design. He was not rushed and answered and discussed all of the questions I had.
When he was done with the design, he emailed it to me so I could examine it. He included several different views of the kitchen so I could see it from every angle. I was stunned by the beautiful design he created with what he had to work with! My kitchen is a tiny galley shape with bump-outs into the garage that I wanted to eliminate so I could use my garage as intended again. The design he came up with incorporated every item we discussed and used every inch available to make a totally modern, beautiful, and usable kitchen. He had to really get creative to accomplish what he did, and I appreciate all of his hard work.
We met a final time at his shop to fine-tune the design and then, when I wasn't ready to commit to the project, he gave me time to think about it. He followed up with me a couple weeks later, and when I told him I still wasn't ready to commit, he said to call him when I am. I really appreciate that he is not a hard-sell, pushy salesman that tries to pressure you into buying his product. He is honest, friendly, and down to earth, and when I am ready to move on with the kitchen project, I will definitely hire him to do the work.
We think we're the best, and we can prove it.
