Home Building reviews in Portland

First they cut a hole in the wall and put in windows which was fine. Then they patched a window and built stairs to a door they also installed. The paint job is not very good and the stairs squeak. We had them come out to fix the stairs and they charged us for it and the'r alleged repair made no difference (it still squeaks). Then they charged us every time they came out after that too. The stairs are still "soft" in the middle of the landing and the carpet was installed by either a very inexperienced person who had to work alone or someone who could care less about a well installed finish product. The base board was hardly cut to fit

properly and is very notably not square. The handrail was bolted on top of the carpet and looks very industrial for a commercial office. I asked the iron worker if he had some type of base cover and he said "no, this is it." I am in construction and understand what needs to be done and what is good and bad. They didn't get away with it here but they probably are in other places.

After excessive delays and persistently poor communication, we elected to choose another contractor to actually build the unit. The plans he did complete (late) gave us multiple problems with the city, delaying our project even more. We are just now breaking ground mid-

. I wish I had never engaged
Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
, as it cost us months of delays.

2013 - Started talking with

back in Nov/
Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
of 2013 about helping us build an
Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
. This is, apparently, the only work he does - i.e.
Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
's. It was always front/center that we wanted to break ground by May 2014.
Feb 9, 2014 - I send him all our initial drawings, and ask for the design contract.
Feb 17 - He finally sends design contract to us, and we execute it with down payment.
March 11 -
Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
send us preliminary drawings. We offer minor changes (just moving some windows).
April 1 - still no word from
Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
on when he will complete the plans to then submit to the city.
April 6 - We finally meet and he now informs me that he's booked up and cannot start in May,
Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
is his earliest time for breaking ground. He says that he has now booked someone else in the May/June slot. I express concern that he knew when we wanted to start then - why didn't he talk to us about this? And can we hold his
Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
slot - sort of a "first right of refusal" - so that this doesn't get pushed back any longer? He assures us that the
Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
spot is ours - direct quote from his email:
"You're still near the top of my list as far as priority. I think I can work around my other projects and schedule in time to make yours work, and on time."
April 21- he completes the final drawings, and says he's going to the city the next day and will submit our drawings.
April 30 - he informs me that he didn't submit the plans, and now says he needs to get engineering involved. He now also informs me that he can't break ground in
Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
, probably won't have time until Oct! Says someone else paid a deposit and he put them in that slot. I ask - what about "first right of refusal" - and he says he doesn't like first right of refusal. And I ask him why he didn't just come to me and say, someone wants your spot - do you still want
Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
, and if you do, you have to put down some money. He said he felt like it was my responsibility to pursue him. At this point, I tell him that I'm going to use another contractor to build the place - and to please just complete the drawings.
May 6 - we discuss by email. Still hasn't submitted the plans to his engineer.
May 28 - finally turns over completed work to my new contractor.
Bottom line - I think
Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
was stringing us along, wanting to try and keep his schedule as full as possible. I get the desire to always have work. He probably gets lots of inquiries that never
Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
out. But, in this situation, we made our goals very clear (breaking ground by May) and we engaged him in a design contract with plenty of lead time to meet this goal. His miscommunication, and ultimately going back on his word left us high and dry - without a contractor in May, hoping to break ground in
Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
...........a short time frame in the busiest months of the year, to find someone to take on a major construction project. Fortunately, I was able to scramble and find someone else who is doing a fantastic job.
I was almost not going to post this overwhelmingly negative review.............except that the design/plans that he completed have given us a h*** of a time with the city. They were incomplete, missing information, designed in ways that weren't to code. And all this from someone who focuses exclusively on
Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
's? This is a complete mystery to me. I would NOT recommend engaging

Over the past 3 years, we have had Herb

perform numerous repairs and remodeling jobs on two different houses. As listed above, he has done everything from completely finishing our basement, remodeling our master bathroom, painting the interior and exterior of our home, etc. We have used him for numerous jobs because of his quality of work, integrity, and genuine affability. While he is not the cheapest, we know that he stands behind his work and has high standards for his employees. For example, after finishing our basement, we had a leak in the ceiling and he promptly came over and repaired it without question or extra charge. Another time, when our master bathroom was being remodeled we noticed that $600 dollars in

cash went missing from my wife's drawer. Herb was incredibly apologetic and embarrassed and fired the questionable worker that had been at our house that day (the only possible culprit unfortunately) and subtracted the cost from the job (without ever questioning that we were telling the truth).
Honestly, there were times we wished he was a little faster with completing jobs (the basement took several months due to permits, etc), but we keep hiring him because we trust his work and never fear that we're being taken advantage of. Despite doing so much work on our 2 houses, he has been upfront and honest about what truly needs to be fixed now and what can easily be monitored and repaired when needed.

Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
and his team were quite simply amazing to work with, and I can’t recommend them highly enough. They arrived right at 8:00 every day so we could discuss the previous day’s work, they stayed on-task throughout the day, and they did a great job cleaning up before leaving. O’
Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
was very responsive to any concerns we had and the quality of work performed by his team was outstanding—inspections were passed with flying colors. When problems arise—as they always do in a project of this magnitude—he is a calm, creative, and competent problem-solver who can simultaneously fix the issue while at the same time “talking down” a worried homeowner. We felt like we were in good hands throughout the whole process and the result was exactly what we had hoped for!

I had a good conversation with
Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
and it sounded like they'd be a good fit for my project, but weeks went by and after several emails to them over a 2 month period I never even got the courtesy of a response to say they weren't interested in my project or couldn't do it. Needless to say I didn't go with them for my project.
My Dad was actually considering
Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
for his new home - that's how I heard about them - but after my experience he's since moved on to look at other builders. Amazing that some contractors lack common courtesy to call and let you know if they can't do your job.

His bid for the drywall work came in the lowest. He was offering to do the work at $960 total. He asked for half the money up front and half on completion. He showed up 1 day and stocked materials, and then 1/2 of another day and hanged approximately 30% of the drywall. Then he went completely off the grid and we never heard from him again. He claimed he had been in a car accident - which could very well be true, however we never got any money back from the job he failed to finish. It also threw our project off schedule as we waited around for a response and we scrambled to find another person.

Portland Home Builders Provider Name Locked
did an excellent job on framing if there was any issues he would call me immediately and go through and explain the issue before proceeding the job. He was very reasonable priced, also recommended great electrician and plumber Who did an excellent job. He also did a few things extra that he did not charge me for . He was able to work with me on price and budgeting which really helped us out.
