Tips for Dealing with Flaky Contractors

Dear Angie: I gave a fencing contractor a $1,300 deposit on a $2,600 job. Months after we signed a contract, no work has been done. What should I do?

Fences provide practical and aesthetic value, but a badly conceived fence can be an eyesore and a source of conflict with neighbors. With wooden privacy fences, vinyl fences and others, it can be difficult to pick the best fencing option for your home. Consider these tips before making this investment in your home.

Hiring a professional to install a fence can increase the price of your fencing project, depending on size and the type of fence.

I would say depends on several things:

1) what % of the job is $400 ?

2) how good is the warranty - against all types of failure, or what - cedar fences usually fail in one of two ways - tornado/hurricane/waves/flood/car collision takes them out, or the posts (if not treated timber) rot out. The fence itself will change color and get fuzzy as it weathers, but should last 15-20 years in most areas.

3) generally, a fence is not something you would pay for a warranty on - if properly put up and with concreted-in copper chromate or copper napthalate treated posts (the green preservative) should last a long time and not need warranty work basically till the fasteners fail or the fence slat boards split too badly.

4) if I was going to spend extra money on a wood fence, it would be for a good quality penetrating sealer, not steel posts.

Fencing reviews in Portland

Dick showed up same day to quote the job. I had the quote in my email the next morning. We had other bids and dollarwise they were similar. We chose

b/c the bid included moving any of the dirt around the new fence. I had a veggie bed next to the side fence and the other contractor said I would have to remove it. Also Dick mentioned they would need a days lead time to get utilities located. The other contractor was going to start immediately with no mention of locating utilities. I felt that was an important first step. Another reason we chose Evergreen is because they altered the existing chainlink gate with angled reinforcements. The chain link sliding gate is much lighter than a dual wooden slide gate.
The two men who arrived on day one were very professional and got to work right away. The old posts didn't need to be dug up b/c the old posts were rotted. The steel posts were offset for the new fencing. They used an additive to the concrete so the posts were set up quickly. Two other men showed up to haul away the old panels. The
Portland Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
wasn't available the first day but the gate was ready to install on day two. At least 1/2 of the fence was done the first day. One of the old panels was used to enclose our yard overnight.
Day two they arrived at about 10 am and we discussed a few minor modifications. By 3pm we had our new fence and sliding gate. The gate was so light I could move it with one finger. : )
It was a few other little things that made me glad I chose Evergreen fencing.
Not only did they work around the veggie bed and make the gate very light and free moving, but they even moved the trashed concrete someone left in the back

so our gate wouldn't run into it. Also I really liked the way the side fence was "stepped" so as to preserve the boards from touching the dirt. The side fence was extended just about 1/2 foot longer than it was before to totally enclose the back, then just a small notch was cut out to access the latch. They were short one steel post on the side to close the gap but sure enough if was there when I got home from work the next day just as promised.
In all a very good experience. I trust this fence/gate will last a very long time. Now we may even use the back

access since the gate is so easy to move now. Thank you.

They visited the work location and got me a quote very promptly. They kept me informed of when the work would be done and showed up at the time they had indicated. The work was finished quickly and the repairs seem to have been done well. I would have no hesitation in using this contractor for fence repair projects.

came to give me a quote and a few days later his crew came back to install the deck which only took 2 days. They worked really fast and cleaned up everything after they were done.

came out soon after I had called, gave us ideas of how much the fence would cost and what it might look like. He gave us some of his own ideas but my son who is an architect gave me a design which
Portland Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
copied perfectly. He spoke with my son to get the details right and he did a beautiful job. He was a little late in getting the job started but he always answered my emails promptly. I would recommend him in a heart beat.

When I did not hear anything back by Wednesday, 2/17, I called there office to see what was going on with my estimate. They said they would have estimator,

, call me. No call back but on Thursday, 2/18, I received an email from him saying that they could not install the custom fence we had discussed. If I wanted to pick one of their standard fences, I should contact him. Bottom line, I don't get a fence I want but if I want to pay a couple of thousand for one of their fences, they would consider taking my money.
If you want anything different, forget this company.

Overall, excellent. They were knowledgeable, hard-working, and the price was better than other bidders. They took great care in working on a steep terrain and really listened the unique type of fencing I needed. This fencing was to enclose a future mini-

and was necessary to keep deer out. They even came up with a unique solution to close in the areas where my rock retaining wall created a gap between it and the fence. Would definitely work with them again. My only complaints are minor, and could be easily fixed. First, the job took a very long time to get scheduled. This was due to medical issues the owner was experiencing. In his defense, he did inform me about the wait and I did agree to wait. The second was that when they showed up to start the work, they handled me about 6 pages of legal jargon that I had not been sent earlier and demanded that I sign it on the spot. I told them I do not sign papers w/o reading them first, and that I couldn't do that. The docs included right to
Portland Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
notices and they said they had to post them to start the work, implying I was holding things up. Well, I understand that (I am a lawyer), but you still need to give people these papers in advance so they can actually read them. They could have emailed me these docs any time during the weeks we waited to get on the work schedule. We were emailing each other frequently months before this job began. It was disappointing to have legal docs pushed on me morning of work when I was trying to leave the house and didn't have time to sit down and digest legal docs. They were otherwise wonderful and I don't think they meant any harm, just didn't think about it from my perspective. This is meant to be a very positive review, but I would just suggest that you ask them to please give you any papers they expect you to sign in advance of them showing up to start work.

Went smooth and very well. The workers observed that the ground level of the neighbor's garden was 6" higher, and installed a 6" retaining board. They also -- without us having asked them and without charging us extra -- made part of the fence next to the gate match its complicated board pattern. Super job -- estimation process and craftsmanship!

Prior to meeting with
Portland Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
Portland Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
, I had meet with four other contractors regarding the damaged fence surrounding my back yard and was dissatisfied with each and every one of them for various reasons. I was relieved to meet
Portland Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
who was friendly, personable, and professional. He provided me with a very thorough and accurate assessment of my property along with an estimate. The estimate itself was incredibly reasonable compared to the other companies with which I spoke. Needless to say, I was happy to give my business to Cascade. My project was started and completed on time. All of the folks who assisted in the construction of my fence were efficient, pleasant and trustworthy. When questions arose, everyone was very receptive. I found
Portland Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
especially to be very skilled in customer service as my satisfaction remained his first priority. I am incredibly happy with the finished product and would definitely recommend this company to friends and family.
