Portland Energy Consultants Reviews

"Was very disappointed with the results of the assessment. The options for improving the comfort and efficiency of the home appeared pricey, but what really made us doubt the pricing and quality of the assessment was when we saw that they had listed changes to our bathroom vents (need to route them through the roof rather than just to the attic) that we thought were already taken care of as a result of the recommendations the home inspector had made when we purchased the home. We contacted the roofing company that did this work and told them that it appears that they did not do the job we had payed them to do. They came by and to our surprise showed us that the work had been done correctly and that Revival had incorrectly assessed the situation. We also saw that although the work that Revival wanted to perform was more involved than what the roofers had already taken care of, the price delta was not at all justified. We later asked a couple of other companies to give us estimates for the work that Revival had recommended and they a) gave us estimates that were substantially lower than what Revival had stated b) they had stated that a number of changes Revival had recommended were likely not even needed. On the surface, they were prompt, and courteous and we would have likely followed their recommendation and in the end felt 'satisfied', but because of the circumstances involved, we found out that from a pricing and proper recommendation perspective, they did not have a customer oriented mindset. If you do end up using them, I highly recommend that you get a second or third opinion on the pricing of the work they are recommending to you pay for.

the work team, who were punctual, careful to respect the house, clean up, and communicate. They were painstaking in ensuring that the insulation penetrated into all the nooks and crannies of the three major attic areas.

"Great-- gave me a detailed report identifying the places where heat was leaking out of my home. Provided a clear plan for increasing insulation and limiting heat loss.

"They performed a home energy audit. They determined that insulating the attic would not provide a great enough ROI to warrant the cost.
They focused mainly on the attic and pointed out places that needed to be caulked and sealed. They gave me a quote for various items in my attic.

"Abucas started on the set date and completed the job one day early. They were prompt, proffesional and cleaned up well each day. Very pleasant workers. My home is holding it's heat much better and I don't hear outside noise as much. I have recommened them to a friend already.

"We initially got the Energy Audit deal and

came out to give us an overview of the issues in our house. We have an older 1920s house and so obviously, it was severely lacking in insulation.

was very professional and clearly explained what could be done and how our house was currently performing. He went around the house and tested for gas leaks, air leaks, insulation in walls, etc. Once the audit was done, he sent (within a week) a detailed list of what could be done and the prices were very reasonable. They also had coupons going on at the same time and with the coupons and the energy incentive plus the tax breaks, it was quite cheap to retrofit the house.
We opted to have the house sealed with foam and for them to go around and air-seal whatever they could. They were very clear that given that this was an older house with lots of nooks they couldn't get it fully insulated but they did a very good job. Our air-loss (with the blower test) went down by 20% after their modifications. The foam sealing of the walls was very quick and the crew was very professional and discrete. They hit a snag (knob and tube in one of the cavities) but took care of it very well: they called an electrician to see if the wire was live (it was although not connected to anything) so they skipped the cavity.
Once everything was done, they sent me all the paperwork for the Energy Incentive.
All in all, very easy, very friendly and very professional. I would highly recommend. I do not yet know how much effect the insulation will have on our heating bill but so far, there has been no adverse affect.

"Despite the many issues with missed test this service provider demonstrated a high degree of customer service and flexibility by offering a full refund - therefore the high grade.

"I have really noticed a difference in the house, especially in the elimination of cold air drafts in the kitchen area and the front entryway. We had tried to eliminate the drafts under our doors ourselves, but without much success. Abacus' professional work appears to be there to stay. They worked at getting it just right so that the insulation cut off the drafts entirely but didn't make it almost impossible to open the doors. The replacement of the bathroom fans was particularly welcome to me, as the noise from the fans could be heard all over the house.
I found it impressive that women made up all but one person in the Abacus work crew. The one who was not female was the supervisor,

-- he was always cheerful, on time (except once when he called to explain why), and good about seeing that the young women did their jobs without being officious. I could ask him any questions I had or talk to him about anything I didn't think was done to my satisfaction. He answered me straightforwardly in a manner I could understand, and he made sure anything that wasn't right was fixed. In addition, one of the co-owners made regular visits to check on the work. I particularly appreciated that -- I didn't feel I had to crawl into the attic or the crawlspace to check for myself. I knew he was very interested in their doing a good job and that he knew better than I what to look for.
Not unusual for Portland, the work was done during the rain (some transporting of materials to the lower floor of the house had to be done outside in the rain) and at least one day, it was cold enough that the deck to the house entrance had frozen rain on it. The job was not held up. It was finished in a reasonable amount of time. I would definitely hire Abacus again.
