Consider accordion doors for your home interior

Accordion doors, also known as folding doors, are unique because they don't open and close like traditional doors. Instead, these doors fold inward in sections in a similar manner as the accordion instrument.

This style of doors operates on a simple pull-and-latch design that warrants quick and easy division of a room while taking up minimum space. Many versions of the door feature a track along the bottom that keeps the door secure and improves functionality when opening and closing.

Accordion doors come in different sizes, shapes, colors and materials, so homeowners can easily adapt this unique door style into their homes without disrupting current decor themes.

Some materials used for accordion doors are wood, molded wood, fiberglass, steel and glass. However, some doors can be composed of two different materials. For example, an accordion door might have a wooden frame and a glass inlay. The durability and soundproof ratings will depend largely on the type of material it's made from, so homeowners should consider more than just the style benefits when choosing materials.

Those made from wood and fiberglass tend to have the highest durability and soundproof capabilities due to the thickness of the materials and their natural ability to withstand wear and absorb sound. When choosing a wooden or fiberglass accordion door, you can usually expect a field sound transmission class (FSTC) rating between 21 and 33. According to the National Association of Home Builders, an accordion door has a life expectancy of about 30 years, which lends to its superior durability.

Accordion doors can be placed in any room in the house but are usually best suited for dividing a living room from the dining area or kitchen. Since many homes are styled where the dining room is often placed right next to the living room and framed by a large entranceway, an accordion door would be a stylish choice for separating these rooms in order to enjoy more privacy and exclusivity. These doors also work well for closets, pantries and laundry areas.

If you're planning on installing new doors in your house, consider calling on the help of a professional. Angie's List member Richard Thuring recently hired Screenmobile of Charlotte to install and repair doors at his house. The Charlotte door installers made three trips to his house, including installation and adjustments to make sure the doors fit just right.

Member Dennis Taylor found success with Oregon Window Installers Inc., who helped replace two doors at his house that were beyond repair.

"As a former contractor myself, I'm very fussy about the work I have performed on my house. These guys did an excellent job," he says of the Portland door installers.
