"They did a great job.  They were thorough and easy to work with.  They cleaned up after each of the jobs they did, leaving things in better condition than when they found them.  When we encountered problems, they suggested budget conscious solutions that were effective."

How should I turn down a contractor’s bid?

Most contractors appreciate hearing why you didn’t choose them, if you’re comfortable providing that type of feedback. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Alfred M.)

Dear Angie: How do I end a letter turning down a contractor? I have three quotes for a home improvement project and picked one to do the job. I want to send a letter to the other two saying I went with someone else, but I don’t know how to end the letter on a positive note.

"I also had a similar experience to the other person who posted here about Ed
Pittsburgh Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
.  I gave Ed a $15,000 deposit to install some heavy duty windows.  I was given excuse after excuse as to the delays by the window company from Ed. After a while I demanded that Ed give me the phone number to the window company which he later did. When I contacted them, they stated that they were getting extremely aggravated because the manufactured windows had been sitting in there shop for over two weeks now and they were just waiting on Ed

to make final payment to them. Needless to say when I heard that story, I marched straight to Ed's house to confront him. He simply apologized. I ended up paying the rest for the windows and his team did come to install it at a reduced labor price. So I guess you can say he is not completely evil. Learn how to organize your finances Ed.  Bottom line, he cannot be trusted.

"I LOVE R&G Remodeling!!  I can't say enough positive things about
Pittsburgh Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
, the owner, and all the guys who work for him.

returned all calls within minutes and was always on time (even a few minutes early). They were polite, professional and extremely neat. They covered work areas with brand new drop cloths to protect carpet and furniture and cleaned up every bit of work debri.  They worked efficiently, not wasting any time, and completing the job expertly. R&G's prices are very reasonable, less than other estimates that I received. I hope to have R&G back to do some kitchen remodeling. I would highly recommend them for any and all jobs. They're the best!"

"
Pittsburgh Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
promptly came to our house at the appointed time. We explained what we wanted to do to our family room- drywall and insulate outside walls, frame in a closet.  He had a very condescending attitude towards the project.  We wanted to do the demo and what ever we could to save cost.  He told us that the project would be "nothing but a can of worms"  and pointed out multiple little things that he would have to do to make the room look good.  While I appreciate that he is a professional, he made us feel stupid for wanting to take on a remodeling project.  We never did get a price from him though if we had I feel that it would have been very high.  I don't think I'd call him again because of his attitude."

"We asked for an estimate for a pretty decent sized project in our home for floor, trim work, and doors. He came on time and seemed very knowledgeable. With so many good ratings on Angie's List, we were excited that we thought we found a good contractor. He explained that he would send an estimate the next day, one week later still no estimate. We called, he explained he would send it the next day. It has been another two weeks without out any word. This leaves us set back once again, having to research even more contractors for the job. We don't understand how or why there are so many good ratings for this contractor. All we can say is, you better have one heck of a job for this one or else he won't even get back to you!"

"After interviewing several contractors, big and small, we chose
Pittsburgh Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
because he had the best, realistic ideas for our kitchen remodel. He was neat, punctual and paid attention to details. Honest to a fault, he made sure we were aware of any difficulties and also showed us ways to get the best value for the money we were spending. Our beautiful kitchen was finished in less than six weeks."

"The below details our six-month experience with
Pittsburgh Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
corp. In short, we will not hire this general contractor again. ? Contractor verbally estimated that the renovations would take three months. Instead, the project took two times as long (six months) (
Pittsburgh Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
6, 2010 to
Pittsburgh Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
29, 2010). (Note: The scope of this project did not increase. Therefore, the timeline should not have increased either.) This contractor never created an overarching timeline / schedule for our project and could not tell us estimated dates beyond a week or so. We found this contractor to be an inefficient project manager, as he continually missed verbal timeline targets. ? Workers on our project were working on other projects at the same time. This pulled resources away from our project, even though our project was way behind the originally stated timeline. ? Materials were not ordered in a timely or efficient manner. We experienced downtime waiting for materials to arrive even though we supplied a materials list at the beginning of the project. A hole was dug for our large egress (exit) window, and the hold sat with a huge board over it for months while we waited for the proper egress window well to arrive. (Window well specs had been given to the contractor at the beginning of the project.) Gravel for the exit window was dumped in our lawn, and it sat for 2+ weeks. Just frustrating time/material management issues. ? Contractor did not respond to our request to fire the (subcontracted) plumber working on our job. Rough plumbing for our job should have taken about one week. Instead, it took two months, greatly delaying the project. The plumber would show maybe one day per week and work for three to four hours. ? Contractor was given specific details regarding materials desired for the project when the original contract was signed. We had to constantly resend the specs for these items to the contractor, even though they had been emailed to him upon the start of the project. ? Contractor tried to grossly over-charge us for change orders. For example, we considered installing a drywall ceiling instead of a drop ceiling in our laundry room. He tried to charge about $25 per sq ft. for framing and drywall. This should cost no more than about $4 or $5 per sq ft. ? Overall, we felt that we had to be the project managers of this job. This was frustrating given we had hired a general contractor (and chose to pay more money) expecting the person to take care of management issues for us."
