came when he said he would. Began work promptly and I did not reenter the house until he was done a few days later. The floors went from a dark stain to natural, adding more light to the rooms. Everything was well done. He cleaned after he finished; so I could have movers come as soon as the floor was ready. I would recommend him highly"

"Crew arrived on time, moved furnishings out of the way and began sanding. Completed all sanding and 2 coats of finish by the end of day 1, came back on day 2 to do a light sanding and apply finish coat. Between all the moved furniture and the fact that it took 4 hours of drying time, the house was difficult to live in for a day and a half. They set up fans and cranked up the heat to speed drying time, and also managed to contain and clean up dust as they were creating it pretty much. On Monday, after the weekend, they returned to replace furniture where it belongs."

Knowing what to expect before you begin having your hardwood floors refinished depends on a variety of factors. Chief among these are understanding the process and working closely with your contractor.

At first glance, the answer seems simple: Refinish wood floors when they need it. That kind of thinking just barely scratches the surface because you need to take plenty of considerations into account first.

"I called

to ask if they sold/installed a particular brand of hardwood that we wanted to purchase for our home--to match existing hardwood that we had. I asked about this particular brand because in our own research, it was the closest match. We certainly weren't married to this brand, and we would have been open to other options. When the man answered the phone, I explained what I was looking for and asked, "Do you sell or install X brand?" and his response was a snippy "No." I said, "Oh...OK," and he said, "Bye." That was the extent of the conversation! Perhaps he was just having a bad day, or he felt that this brand wasn't "exotic" enough and therefore not worth discussing any other options with us? At any rate, because of this unprofessionalism I felt compelled to submit a report."

"Our initial experience was good?we got a quote immediately and set up the job. The contractors arrived on time, explained what they were going to do and got right to work. We approved a stain and they finished the floor and did the first coat on the first day. On the second day of work we saw that the stain had turned out quite a bit lighter than we though; while we weren?t quite happy with it, we understand that wood flooring can take up stain in different ways. That second day the contractors finished and buffed the floor, installed new trim, and left it to dry. When it had dried a day later we found that there was quite a bit of dust and debris that had been caught in the finish, and that the finish was very rough across some of the floor. In addition, the trim that had been installed had a 1 inch gap behind a radiator. When we asked the contractors to return one of them seemed surprised that we had an issue with the trim being incomplete. After a resanding of the floor and refinishing the finish quality was much better, and the trim was then replaced to fill the entire space. Overall the project turned out alright but we were disappointed about the need to police obvious defects of quality."
