How to choose allergy tests wisely

The Choosing Wisely campaign helps consumers make the right choices for their healthcare. These guidelines are especially relevant for patients seeking care for allergies, including these five areas of focus for allergy treatment.

What you should know about children and food allergies

Some 8 percent of children under 18 are allergic to at least one food, and for children younger than 3, 1 in 17 are allergic to at least one food. Finding out more about children and food allergies could help your children with their own food allergies.

Food allergy versus food intolerance

Knowing the difference between a food allergy and a food intolerance is a tricky business. Knowing which your child may be facing can help you understand how to properly treat them, and avoid serious consequences in dealing with their issues.

Detecting a common food allergy early

With one in every 13 children having a food allergy, it seems that now, more than ever, it’s important for parents to know the basics on food allergies and have the ability to identify potential food allergy problems in their children early on.

"She is the only pediatrician I trust. I like her so much. She is so intelligent and expert in her line of profession. She believes in natural supplement. I am so pleased with her excellent performance and will continue to trust her service."

"Our daughter could not run 100 feet without breathing trouble. She was also having hearing loss. Though proper testing and use of various medications we have her syptoms under control and she is able to participate in most activies. We have a better undertanding of the causes for her allergies and asthma and how we can control it. They have been great."

"He is a good guy. He also does pediatric allergy, asthma and the dog stuff. He is fabulous. He just knacks it out and if there is an issue he resolves it. He is the best. He gets busy sometimes. His office environment is super."

"He is the head of the allergy department at
Phoenix Pediatric Allergists Provider Name Locked
. He is very knowledgeable. I like that he talks to the patient even though they're a child. He lets his residents come first and then he comes in at the end and then goes over things, which usually works pretty well. He is very reassuring and can explain in

's terms all the issues that are going on with allergies, or get as complicated as you need him to get. He is not ultimately in a hurry, probably because he has help."

"We arrived on time for my son's appointment with all the paperwork pre-filled out. We waited about an hour before we saw anyone. I saw two other people go back and was not sure why we were kept waiting. It seemed that the staff was not familiar with the office space, I believe they use other doctor's offices on the one weekend they are up here each month. They did my son's intake and then we had to wait another 30 minutes or so in the waiting room because they didn't have enough rooms. Keep in mind my son is 3 and we were not prepared to wait that long. Once we finally got back to see Dr.

he was VERY nice. It turned out he was familiar with my allergist that I had been using for many years before I moved to this area. He was very knowledgeable and explained everything that was happening. My son got a skin p**** test and the nurses were great with him. They even gave him a mini bottle of bubbles that kept him busy for the 20 minutes he had to wait for the test to finish. Once we were seen the care we received was great but the waiting for no apparent reason for almost 90 minutes before that was ridiculous. However, they seem to be the only allergist in the area so I'm giving them another

"I've been with Dr.
Phoenix Pediatric Allergists Provider Name Locked
for a number of years. The office is always pleasant, and the staff are friendly. I've been getting allergy shots for the past few months and it is always easy and fast to go in and get them during the day. I especially appreciate that on a few occasions when I've been out of town during seasonal allergy season I've been able to reach him by phone, to get prescriptions which is a huge relief. Our family has been with this practice for years, and we all have been helped tremendously by our treatment."

"I liked his communication skills. I was in the ICU. I had a really weird immune response. It was a life or death situation. I had massive internal bleeding and blood clots. He was really clear at helping me through the situation. Remissions are quite rare. I had good follow through and follow up."

"Dr. Koslov made grave errors by missing a diagnosis that he should have discovered if he had competence as a pediatrician. One of the purposes of taking your child for regular checkups is for the pediatrician to make screen and make sure your child is healthy, and to detect problems if your child is not. Dr. Koslov failed in the most basic way, in doing this. The diagnoses was discovered by a specialist when it was too late to address it, and Dr. Koslov's missing it has caused irreparable harm and vast disastrous lifetime consequences for my child -- all which could have been avoided, if he had a doctor who was competent. The one parenting decision that I will regret for my lifetime is putting my child's care in this man's hands.
In addition, Dr. Koslov's attitude was glib, superior and condescending. When I went to discuss the issues with him, he treated me in a condescending and glib manner, as though I am stupid. He said things to me like "when your child was in your tummy...." I have two professional, graduate degrees and do not need to be spoken down to.
My child's specialist has altered the way she teaches medical school students due to Dr. Koslov. Now she assumes that pediatricians are not necessarily competent, and she must teach the basics of medicine in order to diagnose the particular illnesses inherent in her specialty.
There are people in all professions in life that have good reputations and do not deserve those reputations.
Phoenix Pediatric Allergists Provider Name Locked
Koslov is one of these individuals. He is a bad doctor. If you choose to go to him, your child is at risk. If you are a parent whose child will be healthy and does not encounter any major illnesses, you can get by with this doctor. But if you want a doctor who will be skilled enough to detect a major problem when it matters the most -- go elsewhere. Run like the wind to find someone else to take care of your child. He does not have the trained instincts of a good physician. He does not have the heart or compassion of a good doctor who cares. The best you can ever do, if you want this doctor -- is hope that luck is on your side.

"He is wonderful. My son was having problems. He was able to discover all of my son's allergies and that he has asthma. He has treated it very well and has it under control. He does not need a rescue inhaler. For quit some time he did have problems coughing horrible. Everybody in the office are very fun. They do games on the computer for breathing tests for the children. They are just wonderful and the kids love him. The staff is wonderful."
