Philadelphia Masonry Contractors Reviews

"I have been a rental property owner with over fifty properties with ten years in the business. They have been doing all my masonry repairs, that includes brick pointing, brick replacement and retaining walls. All very professionally done. All my chimney work that includes cleaning and lining.

is awesome. I've had a bunch of work done on my house recently, and this one was by far the most daunting for several reasons. I live in a South Philly rowhome, and the work I needed done was in a tiny (I mean tiny) alleyway between me and my neighbor (I also had work done on the other back sides of the house, but they were comparatively "spacious").
I had a bunch of masons come out to estimate the work, and they were pretty much all stumped how to do the work. Either they just wouldn't call me back, or would come up with ideas that sounded like they weren't sure (like suspending themselves from the roof).

, who said he does lots of work in South Philly, immediately knew how he'd have to do the work (set up scaffolding). He also gave his opinion on other work that needed to be done, which I was happy to have done since he was already back there.
So after figuring out the work, that

and his team were great.

is very responsive and stayed in good communication with us throughout the project. His team was very polite and hard working. They did a great job in the basement and we are really happy with the results. We have renovated two homes - lots and lots of renovations and contractors. We have had many good contractors but in our experience there are strengths and weaknesses with any contractor - so we have had one's that did great work but were impossible to track down when not on-the-job or ones that did great work but left things a bit messy or they did great work but were overly expensive, etc. But there was really no downside with

and his team. They did great work and showed up when they said they would, kept us involved in the process, didn't overcharge us, etc.

was very responsive and punctual. He and his crew did all the work specified on time; he even came back the day after he initially finished to fix a small ding in the wall. I recommend him strongly. He seems to be busier in the summer, but he was flexible on price if I agreed to delay the work we had done. He even loaned me some tools!

"This job was started in June 2013. While unfortunately, the contractor had a death in his immediate family, which we certainly understood would delay the completion, the work was not finished until December 2013. AND, that completion took place, only after we threatened him with contacting both the Better Business Bureau, Angie's List, and a television station.
This work was being done for our 94 year old mother, who also lost her son a year ago. It took many, many unanswered phone calls, and at least 10 promised dates for him to show up, where he did not, for the work to be done. In the meantime, we found out he had moved on to do other jobs, leaving her dangling.
The demo was left for months, the masonry wall with no brick was left for months, and when the brickwork was finally installed, there was no mortar applied for at least a month, during which time, water could have gotten into the joints. We have no idea at this point whether the wall will crack after winter is over.
My mother gave him 1/2 the money for deposit, and he contacted her for the rest of the money, except for $200, which she unfortunately, unbeknownst to us, gave him. He also collected his final $200, after leaving the job unfinished for 6 MONTHS!!!
Do NOT use this guy.

worked on the job while we were away. We gave him access via the cellar bulkhead door. He put his own lock on it before we left and put our lock back on when he was done. The upstairs cellar door has a weak security bolt which was locked the whole time.

and crew never entered the house other than the basement. He moved the moderate amount of junk in the basement to suit his access needs and helped putting a couple of things back when he came to collect the final payment. The basement walls look great, except for being dark gray. After giving the parging material a couple of weeks to set, I will paint it all white and add some more lighting.. (The basement is not living space. It has a dirt floor and is unfinished. It is strictly for storage and utilities.)

was the only one of the three masons we interviewed who actually listened to the fact that we wanted the basement stonework repaired and stabilized, not beautified. There is no point in making a utility space beautiful. It made a substantial difference in the price. Also, letting the work be done between Christmas and New Year's lowered the price because it enabled

to keep his people working during what is usually a dead week. The only drawback is that the whole house smells of the parging compound. (I have forced air heat which circulates any smell from anywhere in the house.) The smell is not strong and is only a bit annoying when I remember it's there. If that would bother you, I suggest you get basement work done in warm weather and buy a big fan.

finished just a few hours before we got back on the 1st and the smell has already faded into the background, so it's not a long-term issue. This is the second time I've used
Philadelphia Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
for masonry work (see my review of a chimney repair a few months ago). I hope all the masonry work on the house is done for the rest of my life (I am 68), but if there is more to do, I will ask
Philadelphia Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
to do it and not bother talking with anyone else.

"It could not have gone better. I was made aware of every single choice in the process (including ones I had not anticipated, like how to deal with un-square areas, etc.) before the choices were made. When I needed things re-explained and had second thoughts about an aspect of the job, the lead contractor was understanding and seemed genuinely interested in making sure I was getting what I wanted. Add-ons were similarly done with ease. When the job took longer than expected, the team worked late / came in on the weekend to make sure that it could be done by a time deadline I had. This job was worth every cent - not only do I have a fantastic brick patio that I know will last, I have a good memory of the experience of having it done.

"I will say that trying to get them out was a bit of a pain. My father was helping to coordinate everything because of my work hours. It took them over a month to send us a quote. But once the quote was here, they were ready to come. They seem to be a bit disorganized behind the scenes: for example, I received a call from the woman who works at the office on the day the service was to be provided that they would be out. Later that day, my father received a call from one of the workers stating they couldn't do the work because I didn't have an outside water hookup. Ok, so I would reschedule. Later that week I got a call from the office asking if I liked the service they provided. I said they didn't provide a service because we got a call saying they couldn't. After a few phone calls back and forth, apparently, one of the workers asked my neighbor for a water hook up (love my neighbors) and they were able to finish the job, however no one ever called to say they were able to do it. When I got home, I looked at the windows and sure enough, they did look different. I wouldn't have noticed if I didn't look but they did the work. They said they would send out the invoice for the rest of the amount, and it waited for about 6 weeks. Finally, I called saying I never got it and if they could email it or fax it. They wanted to drive over to my house to pick up the payment at that moment. That would have been fine, but I was the one that alerted them to the fact that I hadn't paid yet. I work late hours and didn't want someone coming over late. I mailed it out that day. no worries. the reason I gave such a high rating is because even with all that little annoying stuff, their work was fantastic. I had a leaking front window for years and it is now months later, I still have the drywall off the wall to monitor the water, and still nothing. no water. amazing! I asked for an estimate on doing my front step in the late summer but never heard back. seems they need a bit of nudging or maybe they are just really busy because they are so good. I would love to give them more business but I am too busy to be bothering people about giving me new quotes right now. maybe in the summer.

Philadelphia Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
. spent a lot of time with me when he gave me the quote, walking around the house and answering questions.
Philadelphia Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
Jr performed the work and everything came out great. I plan on using them in the future for other work. My only complaint is that we had several missed appointments for a follow-up after the initial quote as well as the originally scheduled start date. If
Philadelphia Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
hadn't left such a good impression on the initial quote, I don't know if I would have gone through with the work, but in the end I'm glad I did.
