"In January 2014, our three bedroom home was destroyed by fire; smoke and water damage. The house was stripped down to the studs, this was a total renovation. We" decided to add a two story addition which included a master suite, first floor powder room and family room. This was an additional 442 square feet to be added to our home. We had an independent Architect who helped with the design. A friend referred us to Angie’s List to help assist us in finding a contractor who could handle this job. After several bids and estimates we came across
Brother’s Construction website. After reviewing the website and reviewing Angie’s list we called the company.
professionally answered the telephone, explained the assessment process and scheduled the appointment with
. The appointment was scheduled within a reasonable time.
met us at our home and he took time walking through each room and listening to our vision for our home. Within twenty-four hours
called us back with ideas and improvements on our original drawings. We met with the company’s Interior Designer Arsan who was absolutely fabulous. He methodically helped us with kitchen design, bathroom design, cabinetry and flooring. Arsan had an array of patterns and designs for us to choose from allowing us to maintain our theme throughout the house. The material used in the house was of high quality. Once we signed the contact and all permits were obtain the work began. The subcontractors were all professional and respectful of our house. They cleaned up the worksite daily and were very courteous towards our neighbors. They even shoveled the snow of my senior citizen neighbor’s house. We were able to visit the site daily while the team was working without any incident.
did a great job keeping the lines of communication open by responding to emails, text and phone calls. A work schedule was given and the team kept within the time frame. Our project took seven months to complete. Once the work was completed the house passed all inspections; electrical, heating and plumbing systems. The follow-up team completed repairs in a timely fashion. The company does offer a warranty on all the workmanship. If there is a complaint about the company it would be we could not afford all of the upgrades and the building codes became annoying with our design plan. While there are some projects that were not completed to our satisfaction they are minor in the overall scope of the work. We are grateful for
they renovated our entire house. We would recommend this company to complete any remodeling project in your home. The final grade is A for design, workmanship and material and a B for communication and follow-up.

"I feel bait & switch tactics were used. A professional salesman sells the job, a project manager measures, & then they sub the job out. The job went over" 4 weeks! There were several no call, no shows. The workmanship was certainly not up to our standards. We have to hire another company to fix our drywall & repaint. Damages were made to our wallpaper & ceramic tile. Management doesn't even have the courtesy to return your phone calls.

Angie's Answers

?

This part of Don's answer follows my thoughts exactly:

"You want to deal with a professional person that is selling you a bath that was not working as a cashier a few months ago."

Do you go to the gracery store and ask for someone to cook your steak?  Of course not.  So why would you go to a building supply store and ask for someone to remodel your bathroom?  Rarely will you see a legitimate contractor take jobs from a retailer.  Why?  Because they don't pay much.  Speed is the most important thing to them, along with getting it done cheap so they can maximize profit.  About 10 years ago I worked on a few contracted structures (sheds, garages, etc.) from Home Depot.  They contracted to another company who then contracted people to build them.  At that time they paid a flat $250 for a contractor to pick up the supplies, build the structure on site, paint it, and use their own tools.  By the time the cost of a helper, fuel, tools, etc. was factored in there was nothing left for the contractor.  Anyway, the point I'm making is that the guy who will eventually show up to do the work will be so far down the line that everyone else has already taken the profits (Home Depot, ReBath, possibly someone else, and finally the guy working) that he probably isn't going to care what kind of job he does for you, quality or not.  He likely won't have much experience due to a high turnover rate and any experience he does have will probably be limited to his teachings at that job.  He probably can't answer any building code questions or identify other hazards once things are taken apart and he certainly won't do anything he doesn't have to while it is apart.

Another problem I've heard of repeatedly is that if (when) there is a problem there is always someone else you need to speak to.  You might have to talk to 4 or 5 different people before you can even get to someone that can address the problem.  Now multiply that due to having (at least) two separate companies involoved.  "You need to call ReBath."  "No, you need to call Home Depot."

You hire a general contractor for a reason.  We learn, understand, and keep up on building codes.  We are the one point of contact for all questions and issues on a project.  There is no manager in some other store, state, etc. to call.  You contract a GC and deal directly with that GC, or a site supervisor in some cases.  There isn't a huge chain of command to get through to reach the main decision maker for the business.  In a bathroom remodel you need someone who can do the plumbing, repair and/or move any electrical, install tile/flooring, drywall and paint, trim carpentry, and someone to coordinate all of that.  Sometimes you can find a qualified contractor to do all of those things and sometimes he will sub-contract out certain components (especially due to licensing laws) but you will always have that one definitive person to go to for any questions or issues.  A salesman in a store doesn't visit your home throughout the project to check on the status.  Even if he did, he likely wouldn't now what he is looking at.  The same goes for a retail manager.

Hire someone who specializes in taking care of your home.  Hire based on reputation & knowledge/experience.  You are right that not every customer can be happy so an occassional bad review can be found on just about any business.  Read the reviews, not the grades (they are always biased).  Look to see if the contractor attempted to rectify the problem, not ignore it.  Lastly, unless you want cheap, sloppy work and a whole heap of other troubles, don't hire based on a low price.

Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
?
What I always ask my customers regarding this question when remodeling bathrooms is how good they will be about maintaining and cleaning the new bathroom, especially when the old bathroom is obviously neglected.  If you are one of those people who wipes the glass down after a shower and cleans your bathroom every week or two you really don't need to spend the extra money.  If you are at the other end of the spectrum and clean it when it finally bothers you enough it may not be a bad investment.  I've had customer tell me they can tell a difference compared to their old glass without it and others say it made no difference at all.

Your basic rights and protections under law are probably outlined by your state and city's laws. In most states, the easiest way to look up your basic rights and privelges as a consumer would be to visit your state's attorney general website - you can usually find lots of great tips to protect yourself as a consumer there, too. Here's the National Association of Attorneys General's national listing, which includes a link to each state's attorney general website: http://www.naag.org/current-attorneys-general.php

Beyond those basic rights under the law, your expectations of a contractor during, on and after the completion of a job should be explicitly outlined in the estimate and contract. Although it can be a pain in the butt, ALWAYS read the estimate and/or contract before sign it! I cannot stress this enough - frequently the cause of someone's negative experiences with a contractor can be traced back to too few details in the contract.

We've covered contracts, and what you should expect to see in them, here: http://www.angieslist.com/contractor/signing-a-contract.htm

Good luck!

They showed up promptly as expected, evaluated all the issues I had. Then split up and got to work quickly on the various tasks. My basement door wouldn't shut and the trim was falling off on one side. He not only fixed the door so it would shut properly but also cut new trim from spare wood they had in the truck. It looks great. My bathroom closet door wouldn't shut and they fixed that quickly.
My front door was noisey and always stuck when using it, I didn't tell them about that but they noticed it and fixed it without even asking. The trim around the front door was never painted and they went ahead and painted it just because they already had the paint out. They went above and beyond in every aspect. I can't recommend them enough. .

Work was to include: drywall, paint, install flooring in 2 upstairs bedrooms and landing. Estimate was 2 weeks. Drywall and painting was mostly done, but due to issues with quality of the floor installation and had to stop the work. I had to pay another company to remove the poorly installed flooring and istall new flooring.
Issues included, but not limited to:
-Gaps between boards - I could put a credit card and dime in some of the gaps. I noticed this after 1/4 of the 1st bedroom was done and told them I wasn’t happy with it. Rather than fix it, the next day I checked on the progress, they had just kept going… with the same bad results.
-Face nailed boards in the middle of the room - were loose within a few days
-Boards were uneven (not flush) - several boards were sticking up, right at the entrance to one bedroom
-Layout of boards - there was an area where only short boards were used.
- Rather than cut the bottom of the door frames, so the new floor could go underneath, they tried to cut the boards to fit around the door frame. Looked aweful.
- Told that the floor had to be glued (at a higher cost), because the floor could not be nailed. I had to send them the instructions from the manufacturer that showed that it could be stapled).
- Said they are not responsible for the quality of the flooring. Sure, but it is their responsibility to notify the customer that there is an issue and not to just keep laying down bad pieces. Even after I told them to stop laying down the floor, until we could resolve the issues with the qulity of installation, they still continued. Every box of flooring can have bad pieces, but all you have to do is set those pieces aside. There was plenty of good flooring that could have been used.
In the end, they were completely unwilling to address the issues. Only gave excuses. Makes their claims that “Your project is quality controlled start to completion because we do ALL work, no subs used and ‘EXCELLENCE IS THE LEAST WE DELIVER’.” seem like a complete joke.

We used
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
first back a couple years ago for our kitchen
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
. We live in Center City and have the challenges of most families who live in the city (space limitations, storage limitations, parking limitations, etc). We had a plan drawn up that completely rearranged our kitchen layout - moving gas lines, water lines, exhaust in particular.
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
and his team never flinched. The kitchen turned out as nice as we could have expected. Throughout the process, as with any
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
, there were hiccups.
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
took these all in stride, not only having the professionalism to deal with us (we are both working professionals with 2 children under the age of 6 at the time - and hey, we were without a functional kitchen), but the know how to overcome the obstacle without significant extra money or time. In the end, the timeline was a little longer than what we had been initially told, but we were and still are delighted with the result.
More recently, we brought
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
back to renovate our master suite (bedroom and bath). This was a complete
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
down to the studs (like the kitchen) but (unlike the kitchen - first floor) this suite was on the top floor of our standard row home. Again, we had plans drawn up prior but did use
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
's office to help us with some of the details, such as the bedroom built-in cabinets. Again, the result was exactly what we had wanted. And although the room being renovated was on the top floor, they took the time to set-up tarps every morning and took them down every evening prior to leaving, providing as little distraction into our lives as possible. And that brings up another point - we trusted these guys explicitly. They had a key to our house, did all their work while we were out of the house, and even worked while we were on vacation (they activated and deactivated our burglar alarm for us). Now that the job is done, we still call
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
for small issues that have come up - he always is responsive and efficacious.
We are looking at other parts of our house to redo and will certainly call
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
again.

I contracted with him in the beginning of June; I gave them a deposit but didn’t hear from them in order to schedule the job. I reached out to them on multiple occasions but was always told that they would call me back and they never did. When I finally got ahold of someone they told me they wouldn’t be able to schedule until October, and I found out that they thought that I was trying to replace my entire bathroom, when I told them I am only trying to update it. I have been trying to get ahold of them, but now they refuse to give me my deposit back despite the fact that I
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
’t want to do any work with them. I just got off of the phone with a man who identified himself as the owner; he was yelling and screaming at me and then hung up on me.

Arzan, their designer was one of our favorite people to work with because he came up with a complete renovation of our master bathroom that we could have never thought up ourselves. We have an old row home in Center City- first built in 1850 and we were nervous about doing renovations at all in our older home. We were impressed with
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
the owner in his overview of the company because he put us at ease in their experience in remodeling older town homes in Center City
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
was also very respectful and responsive throughout the renovation process which made the experience pleasant and smooth. Our master bathroom looks like something out of a magazine. There are pictures of our bathroom on
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
's website- we have a 60" long modern stand up shower with pebble floor tile and a bench. Again, given what our bathroom looked liked prior to renovation and final product is extraordinary. They did quite a lot of work in about 8 weeks in total- We plan to use
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
again and would recommend them to our friends who own in the city.

“Difficulties” with his plumber caused further delay, but
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
assured us on January 22, 2014 the apartment would be
ready by February 1, 2014, i.e., over two months past due. In the interim, we obtained a tenant who was willing to wait until March 1, 2014; this also fell though, with no adequate responses from
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
. On May 10, 2010 another tenant was
able to move in. However, there were still incomplete items in both kitchen and the bathroom, requiring two further visits by
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
, with the kitchen hood still nonfunctional. One of these delays was due to his being unable to find a replacement bath tub for the one that he broke. My wife was able to find the correct size at Home Depot so work could
continue.
Not only was the length of this project more than 4 months overdue, the cost went from $15,627 to $24,077. This was further aggravated by the finding, post flooding of the neighboring apartment, that the shoe under the
tub had been incorrectly connected, as described by a licensed building engineer.
This resulted in a $1,248 plumbing repair bill. Additionally, we still have to replace the kitchen floor.

performed extensive renovation/remodeling work for me. The majority of this work was performed in 2013 and finished in 2014.
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
renovated 3 bathrooms, put in new hardwood floors in 2 rooms, refinished the remaining existing hardwood floors, painted the home, put in 10 new doors and performed other renovation work.

Less than two years later, the painting is cracking and bubbling. The hardwood floors have several problems. The floors that were newly installed can not be dusted or swtiffered because they catch the swiffer pads, then, I have pieces of fuzz sticking out all over the floor. The hardwood floors that they refinished have places that the stain was stripped when they polished the floors and they did not correct or spot stain these areas. I do not know what kind of polish or finish that was put on these floors but they scratch very easily. I had the floors redone in my previous home and did not have any of these problems nor did they scratch so easily.

I also have cracking, nail pops, etc. in the master bath that was completely remodeled by
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
. I have requested assistance from
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked

Two of the doors do not operate properly. Also, one of
Philadelphia Bathroom And Kitchen Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
employees broke a part of a light fixture, two years later; I am still waiting for the replacement piece and repair of the light fixture. There are other problems such as a cracked tile in the laundry room that I pointed out to their workers that was not replaced.
