"
was great. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I needed work done prior to family members staying at my home. I called
" , within a day
was out to give me an estimate. The painters came the following week to remove wallpaper and paint a few rooms. Everything went smoothly. They cleaned up well after themselves and my house looked great for when my family came. Will certainly use again.

"I was disappointed. However, given all their great reviews I'm willing to believe my experience was some sort of aberration. The Good: 1.
" always answered his phone when I called and returned emails within a few hours. 2. His team showed up on time every day and worked quickly. 3.
was able to make my tight timeline work (I only had two weeks to get the whole house painted) despite it being his busy season. The Just OK: 1. Decent paint job but not exactly meticulous. The bigger issues, I pointed out and they fixed, but the list of missed spots, uneven coverage, etc. was so long I decided to just repaint some things myself. The Bad: 1. Poor communication within his team. There were a number of times I ended up in a back-and-forth between
and one of his team members where each one would either tell me something different or tell me to talk to the other one, and we'd go around in a circle. 2. They left trash and debris all over the house: two x-large bags, about 20 lbs each, just sitting open on my kitchen floor, complete with empty food containers; a large paint bucket filled to the brim with plaster scrapings in the basement; paint can lids, chewing gum and candy wrappers (
's team likes
's and
's Starlight mints, apparently), and dozens of nails and tacks in every room.
said he'd have his guys come back to remove everything, but then his guys told me "it's not in our policy to remove trash."
did finally offer to come pick it up himself, but at that point I just wanted the experience to be over, so I dealt with it. In summary: reasonable price and quick, acceptable work on short notice, but communicating was difficult at times and they left a mess.

should painting or florring come first in a remodeling project (Photo by member Jane A. of Alpharetta, Ga.)

Remodeling tip: Should painting or flooring come first?

Angie Hicks responds to a member who wants to know whether interior painting should come before or after the installation of hardwood flooring.

Utilizing the proper tools can ensure the best paint job possible.

Interior Painting

Professional decorators say painting is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to dramatically change the look of a room. It's also one of the more accessible do-it-yourself projects for the homeowner, though a professional interior painting company will likely do a better and more long-lasting job.

You may prefer the lived-in look, but a hole in the wall makes your home look a little too lived in. A pro tells how to repair a hole yourself and save money.

Before you toss it, check the label. Some hazardous items — even batteries and ink cartridges — should be disposed safely, which doesn't mean at the curb! Why?

Painting - Interior

Have you ever had a leaky roof leave a water stain on your ceiling? Has your home settled over the years and you are starting to see stress fractures and nail heads popping out of the drywall?

These are the most common problems with ceilings, and unless they are addressed, they can be quite an eyesore. If you are ready to tackle the project yourself, follow these simple tips and you will have a freshly painted ceiling in no time.

Angie's Answers

That's very difficult to answer without seeing the house. As one poster said, the prep is the most important part. On newer homes that don't have a lot of peeling paint, the prep can be very minimal even as low as a couple or a few hundred dollars for the prep labor.

On a 100 year old home with 12 coats of peeling paint on it, then the prep costs can be very high and can easily exceed 50% of the job's labor cost.

A 2100 sq ft two story home could easily cost $1000 just for the labor to prep for the paint job. That number could climb too. Throw in lots of caullking  or window glazing, and you could be talking a couple or a few hundred dollars more for labor.

Painting that home with one coat of paint and a different color on the trim could run roughly $1000 or more just for labor. Add a second coat  and that could cost close to another $1000 for labor.

For paint, you may need 20 gallons of paint. You can pay from $30-$70 for a gallon of good quality exterior paint. The manufacturer of the paint should be specified in any painting contract. Otherwise, the contractor could bid at a Sherwin-Williams $60 per gallon paint and then paint the house with $35 Valspar and pocket the difference. $25 dollars per gallon times 20 gallons? That's a pretty penny too.

That was the long answer to your question. The short answer is $2000 to $4000 and up, depending upon the amount of prep, the number of coats, the amount of trim, and the paint used.

Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
?
Without seeing the project I'm not sure exactly what is happening.  HOWEVER, I've never heard of someone "floating" over paint blisters - just logically that can't work.  If air or moisture are trapped (because that's what causes blisters) painting over them won't fix the initial problem.

I have a couple suggestions - My first would have been to contact the paint manufacturer - whether it's sherwin williams, benjamin moore, behr, etc. to see if they would send a rep out to give their recommendation.  We have done this before starting a project to get the best possible recommendation for work to be done and have found them to be very helpful in diagnosing what is currently going on and the best way to fix it.

If that doesn't work, I would call either the better business bureau or maybe the local paper if your contractor isn't willing to work through the problem with you.  Also, If your contractor warrantied the work I might re-read that to see what they cover if anything.

My guess is that there will have to be some sort of dispute resolution process.

Hope this helps!

Yes - absolutely!  Refinishing is THE VERY BEST way to go to avoid tearing out a perfectly good bathtub that just LOOKS bad after years of use.  Go to the link below for some before and after refinishing pictures of acrylic tubs.

Marcio and his crew did a wonderful job. I needed to have an apartment painted on short notice (kitchen, bath, living room, and two bedrooms). Multiple walls and ceilings had significant plaster cracks that needed repair as well. After interviewing three painting services, Marcio offered the best price and started the next day. He initially estimated the project would take 3-4 days, but he finished in two. His crew worked non-stop from 8AM until sunset and was completely professional. They were careful to keep the floors and cabinetry clean, and the job looks fantastic. I would hire him again in a heartbeat.

Excellent. On time, friendly, efficient. One of them didn't always use a mat when doing touchups, we had to clean a very small amount of drips, but otherwise excellent.

Sloppy opening paint cans and got paint in on my rug in more than one place. They took my drapes down but put them back up very carelessly. I suppose this was a good example of you pay for what you get (half of my other estimate).
When getting an estimate from Mr.
Philadelphia Interior Painters Provider Name Locked
I asked him if he would be part of the pairing crew. His reply was YES. Other than coming in the first day to tell his 2 painters what to do he never actually picked up a paintbrush. The first day one of the two spoke English. After that I was left with the painter who spoke little to no English making communication very difficult. A two day job ended up taking nearly 2 weeks.

When I set up by emails the time for the work to be done, I described the areas that I wanted painted: the dimensions of the rooms; special consideration, such as one high ceiling; the brand and type of paint that I had, and asked if there was anything that I needed to do beforehand or have on hand for them to do their work.
They arrived on time, and I discussed the work with the owner,
Philadelphia Interior Painters Provider Name Locked
. The owner let me know that there needed to be preparatory work on one small part of a wall in one of the areas, and that he couldn't paint it until quite an extensive process had been gone through. He said he'd need oil primer, and asked if I had any. I said I'd check in the basement to see if I had any on hand. I thought, "Why didn't he tell me this beforehand; I could've prepared the surface myself, if I'd known it was required. I could've made sure I had the right primer, if I'd been told ahead of time. don't they tell homeowners that the prep work needed to be done ahead of time?"
After we talked about what areas to paint, he turned to me and said, "Do you have paint sleeves and plastic? I need paint sleeves and plastic." I said I'd check in the basement. I felt upset. I'd given him information about the job and had asked if there was anything more that I needed to do before he arrived. I found some oil primer, some paint sleeves, some drop cloths, and a tarp in my garden shed that I thought they could use.
When I took all the materials and gave them to
Philadelphia Interior Painters Provider Name Locked
, I said, "It would've been helpful if you'd told me that you needed these items from me ahead time, so that I could've made sure that I had them on hand." He said, "It's very clear in the Angie's List information what materials I needed." I later checked on Angie's List, and the deal said only that "inexpensive supplies like tape and spackle" are supplied. If paint sleeves and drop clothes were to be provided by the homeowner, I think that they should have said so in the deal information, or in the emails that were exchanged ahead of time, especially since I asked if there was anything that I needed to do or provide.
Philadelphia Interior Painters Provider Name Locked
said that he couldn't work with "someone who was coming at him" like I was and that he'd leave. I said, "I'm upset and will need some time to calm down and went to a different room in my home." He called up the stairs saying he was leaving. I said, "Will you make sure that I receive my refund through Angie's List?" He said that I could call them. He did everything he was supposed to and his "butt was covered."

They came out and left without doing anything. I gave this company all information that they needed to complete my job before arriving at my home. I also asked them if there was anything that I needed to prepare or have ready for them when they got here. I did purchased a few items but that was it. They never told me anything else. When they arrived, they did not have any materials that were needed. I brought down the materials that I had purchased, and was told that they were the wrong ones and that he had the correct ones in his truck. This was confusing to me as he said he did not have any with him. At this point the situation was falling apart and I did not want him to do this work for me as well as he did not want to do the work.

First the painters repaired the walls where needed. They made suggestions as to the type of paint that I should use. They painted and completed a huge living room and the adjoining halls. There were some touch up work that needed to be done at a later date and they came back and did a wonderful job . They were able to complete the job in time before the arrival of my guests and I was pleased with the final results. Yes I will definitely use them again.

came out and gave me an estimate and he was great. He responded very quickly and was punctual. He was very pleasent and told me that he wouldn't be doing the painting but his partner would. I had alot of questions because this was the first time I had professionals paint. He was very helpful and answered all my questions and gave me advice. On the day the service was provided three guys showed up. They were all very nice and professional and they worked very hard. The first day they worked from 7:30 am until about 5:30 or 6 pm. The second day two of them came back to touch up and do the trim and the doors. They worked very hard. I learned they were contractors with the company so they were not the "partner" I was promised and as hard as they worked it is clear they are not professional painters. The first night I cleaned up after them for two hours. They had gotten paint droplets on all my windows and they had gotten paint on my furniture and floors including brand new carpet. I cleaned up as best I could because I wasn't sure if it would still be fresh enough to clean the next day when they came back. I had paint droplets in other places from a previous paint job prior to when I moved in. When it is old paint you can't really clean it up but all the new paint did come up with scrubbing. I told the lead person the next day and he tried to say all of it was old paint. I know it wasn't or it wouldn't have come off plus how could paint have gotten on my furniture that was brand new and be the same color as what they painted? The second day I followed after them and cleaned up so I spent the day cleaning.
Philadelphia Interior Painters Provider Name Locked
called to see how the job was and I let him know that I had a lot of cleaning to do so he knocked $50 off the bill. Since then I have been finding more paint in places and the borders between the ceiling and walls are not straight and messy as are the lines between the walls and the baseboards. I can't say the contractors didn't work hard because they did and deserve to be paid however this is not a professional paint job which is what I paid for. I would recommend that you ask if he will be using contractors if you decide to use this company.
