High-end pet doors worth the price

"I'm looking for a company or contractor that would install pet doors. What kind of company should I be looking for, and what should I expect out of the job?" — Angie's List member Hector Sosa

You'll want to hire someone with a carpentry background, according to David Stapp, owner of highly rated Responsive Repairs in Bala Cynwyd, which services portions of Montgomery and Delaware counties.

"They should have the ability to measure, cut and fit materials as required, as well as knowledge of door or wall construction," Stapp says. "Putting pet doors in existing doors rather than walls is preferable. Holes through walls are far more complicated and likely to be more costly and time-consuming."

Homeowners should consider the implications for security and insulation. "Some kits have gasketing, and additional caulking may be required to prevent moisture infiltration," Stapp says. "The more expensive kits address this with insulation and seals.

"There's also magnetic door guards that stay closed until the pet comes through. Some doors won't open unless the pet with a special sensor-equipped collar attempts to come through. You'll want to use features like that to thwart thieves and raccoons getting access."
