Philadelphia Bathtub Refinishers from people just like you.

"I have seen a number of reviews on Angie's List quite similar to mine and I would suggest that reviewers read the negative reviews before deciding whether or" not to use this service. If the service goes well, you may be in luck, but if it doesn't, customers have found that they are given the run around by and never have their situation resolved. A number of people have reported a deficient refinishing job with a bumpy finish that is likely to chip and peel after a short period of usage. These customers have either received 's word that he would fix it, or his promise that he would refund the money, and eventually he does neither but just disappears. I would recommend you spend a little more and use a provider that gives a multiple year guarantee of their services. I question how long the jobs that appear to be executed well by Tub N Counter will actually hold up. My experience is detailed below: After re-tiling our shower, we had Tub N Counter come to refinish our tub, specifically because the tub finish had been removed where the tile met the tub. Other than that, the tub was in very good shape. refinished the tub. When the tub was dry, we noticed that the tub surface was bumpy - not just in the area you would expect for a "no slip finish" but everywhere, including on the outer side of the tub. There were also small clumps of product in various places on the tub. We sent an email to with numerous photos attached to show the imperfections. He informed us he was on vacation but would get back to us when he got back and had a to talk to . He later stated that they would come by to take a look. When he didn't contact us, we reached out to him two more times. When we didn't receive a response, we called him again. He made up a story about the imperfections being due to a leak in our pipes, and he said that he would not come back until the leak was fixed. This is completely inaccurate and impossible; our water had been turned off for a month while the tile work was being done and had not yet been turned on at the time he called. When we told this, he said that we were "that type of customer" and said he would prefer to give us a full refund than deal with us any further. We agreed to the full refund. Two weeks later, we hadn't received anything from him so we reached out again thanking him for his offer to resolve the situation amicably and inquiring as to when we would receive our check. We also informed him that if we didn't hear back from him in another week - (for a total of 3.5 chasing after him), we would contact Angie's List and the BBB. At that time he responded in an accusatory manner, saying that we had doubted his word and threatened his business and that he would not send us a check until we had written him a positive review that was approved by him on Angie's List. I wrote him back to inform him that I would not write him a positive review, but if I didn't receive a check in a week, I would write him a negative review. We have now spent over a month chasing after this man and we have no refund and no fix for our faulty tub refinish.

"I am pleased to recommend . In 2014 we had a shower and walls replaced in our 3rd floor bathroom. We chose after" reading over 100 reviews and jotting down every problem anyone ever had. After reviewing many companies, we then called the local sales representative. He came out and spent time answering my many questions and gave me an estimate. Because this was a big expenditure for us and our home is over 90 years old and very precious to us, I asked him if I could email him if I had further questions. He answered all these promptly. We decided to go with . There were a few problems along the way, but we were pleased that wanted to do everything they could to do a perfect job and live up to what we had been told about their work. , a top notch installer, found excellent solutions to every problem and made us feel like really care. I could only wish that every company had this same very professional approach to their work. I would encourage every homeowner who wishes to have the best job done to do their research and have the good fortune to choose the company that lives up to their promises.

bathtub refinishing

Bathtub Liners and Refinishing

Over time, the bathtub can begin to show signs of wear with stains, scratches, a dull finish or other ugly marks. Bathtub refinishing is an option that can return a bathtub or shower enclosure to like-new appearance.

Dear Angie: We're remodeling our bathroom. Which is better to help increase the resale value of our home: a tub, a shower and one sink; or a big shower and two sinks? – Cal Z., Lakewood, OH

Refinishing your bathtub instead of replacing it can freshen up your bathroom and save you money.

OK - terminology issue here. The "shower pan" is a collection liner than underlies the shower floor itself, and is designed (if built and plumbed right) to trap any leakage from the shower floor and route it to the same floor drain pipe. Example image here, copper in this case -

It sounds like your are saying the shower floor or base unit failed - likely a fiberglass or plastic shower, which commonly fail due to incomplete support under them. This can be repaired if fiberglass, but is not usually done unless just microcracking, as it is hard to find an expert - usually you have to have a car body fiberglass specialist or a surfboard repair expert do it, and the color will not match perfectly unless you get a new gelcoat over the entire base unit. Cost about $300-500, ASSUMING the material can be repaired - true fiberglass can, thermoplastic can sometimes be welded but anyone's guess how long it will last without cracking again, plastics like PVC can rarely be fixed so they will hold someone standing on them. Any sort of repair is likely to crack again, because you have done nothing to remove the cause of the cracking which is standing on a base that is not fully supported over its full extent. Some cheepo or desperate plumbers try injecting non-pressuring type expanding foam underneath to improve the support - this does a great job of supporting it but unfortunately supports mold, so starts stinking in short order as a rule.

The normal fix is to remove and replace it, because once it is out there is no sense in putting a damaged one back in for the small increment in cost. Removing it means taking the shower wall liners or the bottom row or two of tile out so you can get the new base unit into place (because they overlap it), then replacing them. So, the $3000 range indicated is indicative of this type of job, which typically runs from a very low of around $1500-2000 for an identical base unit, to more typically $3-5,000 depending on whether a shower enclosure or tile walls. Of course, when the new one is put in, it is CRITICAL that it be fully supported - this means rubbing plumbers rouge or similar marking substance on the bottom, test fitting it, and then lifting it out and checking that all the stiffener ribs and support pads made contact with the pan, and making adjusments as necessary until it has full contact, then standing in it and rocking back and forth to check for any points not making full contat and fixing them.

The $10,000 plus numbers you got must have been for entire shower replacement down to the joists and studs, and the $30,000 range number would be typical for a full bathroom remodel with new shower or shower/tub and doors and surround, wall finishes, vanity, sink, toilet, and flooring and door.

Bathtub Refinishing reviews in Philadelphia

It was a fantastic experience! arrived right on time (great start!). He took the time to explain and map out what he was going to do and how much time would be involved. Then - he accomplished all he had promised! The bathtub is no longer an accident waiting to happen due to using a transfer bench. It's now a matter of simply ...More stepping over the low sill into the tub. Yay! How messy was the job? I have no idea as left the area so clean (does it get any better?). And - on top of all of this - the price was right. Both my family and I have nothing but kudos for both and his company!
- Angela K.

was a true professional. He got back to me very quickly, after I sent him an email inquiring about his services. He was able to do the job within a few days after our conversation. He was punctual and kept me informed as to his schedule, etc. He came two days in a row, in order to fully complete the job. Day one, he was ...More here at 7:20 a.m.! The tub looks fantastic! noticed some tiny place in the tub that I couldn't even see and wanted to make that spot absolutely perfect. He said, "I notice everything." Thus, one of 's colleagues will be back at my place early next week to make this tub even more perfect-- top-of-the line! He included the cost of this extra finish work in the final bill and didn't add extra cost. Very fair; very nice person; lovely with our Springer Spaniel!
- Elizabeth P.

, and were prompt and professional, courteous and great to work with. The site was kept clean and completed on schedule.
- Diane D.

Polite, responsive and professional. He taped (masked) the drain and overflow (some refinishers remove these), but the final product was well done. New finish is even and glossy. Tub bottom has a non-slip finish. Work was done on-time and clean up was excellent.
- Steven H.

I had just moved into a new (old) house which had two bathtubs. I saw the Angie's List deal with this company which was a good price to refinish a bathtub, so I purchased two. I had done this at my old house with a different company and had been happy with the results.
Since one of the bathrooms needed some renovation first, I had them start ...More with one tub. They did a good job EXCEPT they installed some gritty stuff in the bottom that makes it so you don't slip. They did this without asking even though they mentioned later that it is optional. I did NOT want this in this particular tub because it does not have a shower and never will because there is a slanted wall right above it. This is an old clawfoot tub that is very clearly only used for baths. Now everytime we use it, we have to sit on the scratchy bottom. It looks good, but that is annoying.
The renovations on the other bathroom took longer than usual so I asked for an extension of my coupon. At first they said no, but I talked them into a year extension. When I was ready (within a year), I called them numerous times to schedule the refinishing and they never called me back. I paid for this service so I don't see why they can't honor that.
So, I paid for two bathtub refinishes, got one which I'm not happy with. Waste of money. I recommend that you use another company.
- Matthew B.

The circumstances were a bit odd because the contractor had a death in his family that caused an interruption in the work. Throughout he and his staff were professional and timely and did a good job.
- Leslie C.

Mr. was very professional and friendly when I placed a call asking for an estimate. We set a date and time for the repair and the service man arrived at the designated time. Our tub was stripped and reglazed. A few days later, Mr. returned to complete the tub work. My tub looks like new and I was extremely ...More pleased with the results. I would definitely recommend and Sons for a tub reglazing.
- Marguerite G.

From estimate to finish, was responsive, clear, and professional. We were fully redoing our bathroom, and explained the order in which to complete everything (plumbing, reglazing, tile floor). The price was fair, compared to estimates I saw online from other companies. I didn't even get other estimates ...More because seemed like the most knowledgeable person by far, and this impression was reinforced upon meeting him. This is a job that can go very, very wrong and be a total waste of money if you don't hire an expert and pick someone who just does it "on the side."
was meticulous in the reglazing, and he accommodated some last-minute minor issues (we broke a tile with a soap dish the night before he was coming over, and he replaced it). He also explained thoroughly how to care for/clean the tile. The finished work looks gorgeous, and people can't believe that the same ugly pink and blue tile is beneath the beautiful white glaze!
A couple months after the work was done, a tiny chip appeared in the bottom of the tub. I called , and he came by within a week or so to look at it. Apparently, a speck of dirt got under the glaze, which caused the chip. (Not to be cynical, but I appreciated that he didn't try to imply that we'd done something to chip the glaze and charge us for it.) fixed it then and there, free of charge, and it blended perfectly with the rest of the tub. We haven't had any other problems!
I highly recommend (and have done so to various friends/family looking to redo bathrooms)!
