"The first time I had a refrigerator ice maker issue. A contract guy came and he fixed it but refused to give me the defective part. I owned the part but per the" home warranty company but he took away the part. The icemaker broke again in 3 months and I had to pay another 125 to get it fixed. This time the guy did give me the defective part but the Icemaker was not fixed. He had to come back one more time to fix it but there was no charge this time. Last time the evaporator for my air conditioning leaked. They sent a very non-professional guy who bought his 10 year old son with him who tracked dirt on our carpet and never offered to clean it. It was like he was doing us a favor. He just put stop leak in the ac and filled it up with freon and charged me $160 for the freon which leaked back again after a couple of months.

"we've used to try to get a number of problems with plumbing that have come up in the house we purchased last year resolved. Every time" I call, I wait on hold forever, and am then told that someone will contact me in the next few days. I've had plumbers come out now on 5 separate occasions for the same issue. just keeps trying to skirt around the issue. I have learned that if you say "recall" you won't get charged another service fee, but am really getting tired of them trying so hard not to cover things. Today had the plumber come out for a toilet that randomly refuses to flush. It'll not work for several days to weeks and then it'll randomly flush itself. Well, yesterday it did the randomly flushing itself thing, so when the plumber came out he said that there was nothing he could do. Said that it probably needed to be snaked with a camera but they didn't have the equipment to do that, so would need to contact again. :( Sigh. Another phone call with . Seriously, not worth it. Will not be renewing our contract with them. On a separate note, we also had the pool coverage. Not worth it. They basically only cover minor equipment failure and filters. Nothing else. We needed lights replaced and they didn't cover that. They also didn't cover fixing our heater.

Home Warranties

Year after year home warranty companies have topped the Angie's List most complained about category list, with nearly half of member reports in this category rating these companies unfavorably. The key to being satisfied with a home warranty is understanding how they work, what they cover and how much repairs are going to cost you.

Home warranties can provide you with peace of mind, but they can also be a headache if you don't do your homework. Understand your home warranty and read it through before you are in the need to use it.

Home warranties are a good option if you're buying a previously lived-in home, provided you understand what you're purchasing. Warranties aren’t designed to act as insurance to protect homeowners from loss.

When building a new home, the terms of the home's warranty and insurance should be perfectly clear.

Depending on cost and coverage, a home warranty may be a good value if you're buying a newer home. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Shawn S. of Lexington, Mass.)

Should you buy a warranty to protect you from unexpected problems with a newer home? Knowing the costs, benefits and drawbacks will help you decide if a warranty has value for a home five years old or less.

Angie's Answers

First, call your insurance company and tell them you do not want any proceeds paid to the contractor under your policy as you are not going with them.  This way they can not collect money on your behalf.  Insurance will typically have you sign a form for release of funds anyway but this is a good extra step to make sure your signature isn't forged.  Second, call the contractor and tell them you will not be needing their services afterall.  Did your husband pay a deposit?  If so it may be non-refundable.  Then follow up with a certified letter.

An email as well doesn't hurt but some states don't yet recognize email as a form of communication for legally binding documentation.  This may have changed and I'm sure more states do recognize them as I haven't followed that topic elsewhere as much as I used to.  The contractor's office should be local.  A sure fire way to ensure they got the message is to deliver the letter to the office of the contractor and have someone at the office sign a duplicate stating it has been recieved and read.  There's no arguing whether they received it or not by doing that.

Hopefully you've learned your lesson about high pressure sales techniques and storm chasers looking for a quick buck.  Some people find out a much harder way.  While these guys may be legitimate you should always do your homework on a contractor before signing the contract.  Unless you have water running out of the house and the work has to be done on the spot it's not so much of an emergency that it can't wait until the next day.

Home Warranty reviews in Orlando

we've had for over ten years. They have always provided excellent contractors, who have performed their jobs well. Because of them, we still have the same , dish washer, & washer & dryer. They have replaced our a/c compressor & refrigerator, when they died. We recommend them to anyone who owns a home.

On the last visit during my regular furnace tune up, he said he had found a problem that needed to be fixed. There were some points sticking that could possibly overheat up the compressor. Although, they would not work on the air conditioner and then send the bill to my appliance warranty company to be reimbursed. I did call ...More and they said the repair was covered. I paid for the $205 bill up front and was going to reimburse me. They sent someone out the next day and he replaced the part. I got the bill and faxed it to the warranty company. I asked the girl on the cover sheet if she would email me that she got it and she quickly responded back. She advised me it would be 10-14 days before I got my check, but I got it two days later. The way they took care of me was phenomenal. Usually it is a fight on the phone when you try to use your warranty, but I was so pleased as I did not have any troubles with them or the service.

We thankfully have not had to use the service to date, but purchased the contract just in case. The plan should cover any and all problems that would have been taken care of with the original warranty.

On this they exclaimed with some that the item I was claiming was not covered. In previous claims--their contractors were not timely in returning service call requests. I believe one is better off just saving their money and contracting directly with service providers because in the end--NO INSURANCE COMPANY IS WILLING TO TAKE ...More A LOSS ON ANYTHING! You will always pay more than what you get out of them!
