"The on site crew was talented, efficient, courteous, and professional. They were helpful and understanding of the fact that we have a 2 year old during construction," and also were very courteous to my wife who works from home. The site manager was knowledgeable and very professional. He was accessible and very easy to work with. The specialists who worked on site were also excellent. The results are spectacular. I never expected an 80 year old room could look so new and clean. PCC handled all of our requests and installed everything to perfection. We used a mix of vendors for the finishes and the results are seamless. I also want to note that the team came in on Christmas Eve to help finish some details so we could use the new bathroom the next day while hosting for the holiday. I really appreciated that they would come in on the holiday to meet our request to be ready on the 25th. I'm sure that the site manager and owner had plenty of family obligations, but they made time for us too. Their professionalism and reliability got
and Construction over the top to the straight A review here. I highly recommend reaching out to them for work on co-ops and any other kind of property.

"Initially met with three highly rated contractors from Angie's list and found the selection process difficult: all had excellent experience and pleasing manners." Was a nervous wreck about the renovation--am retired and had no experience with such a process--so needed someone that inspired both confidence and trust. That person was
. On his first visit to my apartment,
listened to my plans, offered useful advice and made a number of suggestions re the renovation. Additionally, when I asked all three contractors to provide a proposal for the desired work,
was the first to respond to my request and provided the most complete work plan including a detailed payment schedule and performance measures. From beginning to end, my experience with
was positive.
was readily accessible throughout the course of the project,
was unfailingly polite and supportive and did a great job of handling my condo's onerous paperwork requirements,
was a wonderful foreman and all the workers I met (
,
and
) were polite, dedicated, skilled and reflected
's commitment to customer service. As a foreman,
was a gem. He is an excellent manager: smart, conscientious, has good judgment, is knowledgeable about his craft and has superb interpersonal skills. He smoothly handled a very nervous client--me, a demanding building staff and potentially uncooperative neighbors. To my great relief, he made himself available to answer my numerous questions and to review the appropriateness of my purchases eg lighting fixtures and appliances. He also made certain that all the work was done the way I wanted. For example, he showed me different patterns for laying tile and had me select the pattern I wanted in the kitchen and bathroom.
did a fine job renovating my kitchen and bathroom. I would definitely hire them again or refer them to family or friends in need of a contractor.

?

This part of Don's answer follows my thoughts exactly:

"You want to deal with a professional person that is selling you a bath that was not working as a cashier a few months ago."

Do you go to the gracery store and ask for someone to cook your steak?  Of course not.  So why would you go to a building supply store and ask for someone to remodel your bathroom?  Rarely will you see a legitimate contractor take jobs from a retailer.  Why?  Because they don't pay much.  Speed is the most important thing to them, along with getting it done cheap so they can maximize profit.  About 10 years ago I worked on a few contracted structures (sheds, garages, etc.) from Home Depot.  They contracted to another company who then contracted people to build them.  At that time they paid a flat $250 for a contractor to pick up the supplies, build the structure on site, paint it, and use their own tools.  By the time the cost of a helper, fuel, tools, etc. was factored in there was nothing left for the contractor.  Anyway, the point I'm making is that the guy who will eventually show up to do the work will be so far down the line that everyone else has already taken the profits (Home Depot, ReBath, possibly someone else, and finally the guy working) that he probably isn't going to care what kind of job he does for you, quality or not.  He likely won't have much experience due to a high turnover rate and any experience he does have will probably be limited to his teachings at that job.  He probably can't answer any building code questions or identify other hazards once things are taken apart and he certainly won't do anything he doesn't have to while it is apart.

Another problem I've heard of repeatedly is that if (when) there is a problem there is always someone else you need to speak to.  You might have to talk to 4 or 5 different people before you can even get to someone that can address the problem.  Now multiply that due to having (at least) two separate companies involoved.  "You need to call ReBath."  "No, you need to call Home Depot."

You hire a general contractor for a reason.  We learn, understand, and keep up on building codes.  We are the one point of contact for all questions and issues on a project.  There is no manager in some other store, state, etc. to call.  You contract a GC and deal directly with that GC, or a site supervisor in some cases.  There isn't a huge chain of command to get through to reach the main decision maker for the business.  In a bathroom remodel you need someone who can do the plumbing, repair and/or move any electrical, install tile/flooring, drywall and paint, trim carpentry, and someone to coordinate all of that.  Sometimes you can find a qualified contractor to do all of those things and sometimes he will sub-contract out certain components (especially due to licensing laws) but you will always have that one definitive person to go to for any questions or issues.  A salesman in a store doesn't visit your home throughout the project to check on the status.  Even if he did, he likely wouldn't now what he is looking at.  The same goes for a retail manager.

Hire someone who specializes in taking care of your home.  Hire based on reputation & knowledge/experience.  You are right that not every customer can be happy so an occassional bad review can be found on just about any business.  Read the reviews, not the grades (they are always biased).  Look to see if the contractor attempted to rectify the problem, not ignore it.  Lastly, unless you want cheap, sloppy work and a whole heap of other troubles, don't hire based on a low price.

?
Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
?
What I always ask my customers regarding this question when remodeling bathrooms is how good they will be about maintaining and cleaning the new bathroom, especially when the old bathroom is obviously neglected.  If you are one of those people who wipes the glass down after a shower and cleans your bathroom every week or two you really don't need to spend the extra money.  If you are at the other end of the spectrum and clean it when it finally bothers you enough it may not be a bad investment.  I've had customer tell me they can tell a difference compared to their old glass without it and others say it made no difference at all.

Your basic rights and protections under law are probably outlined by your state and city's laws. In most states, the easiest way to look up your basic rights and privelges as a consumer would be to visit your state's attorney general website - you can usually find lots of great tips to protect yourself as a consumer there, too. Here's the National Association of Attorneys General's national listing, which includes a link to each state's attorney general website: http://www.naag.org/current-attorneys-general.php

Beyond those basic rights under the law, your expectations of a contractor during, on and after the completion of a job should be explicitly outlined in the estimate and contract. Although it can be a pain in the butt, ALWAYS read the estimate and/or contract before sign it! I cannot stress this enough - frequently the cause of someone's negative experiences with a contractor can be traced back to too few details in the contract.

We've covered contracts, and what you should expect to see in them, here: http://www.angieslist.com/contractor/signing-a-contract.htm

Good luck!

After the initial meeting and quote for my backsplash the stand at
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
helped me work on a design and choose the appropriate color scheme. They began the job on time, and finished on time. They cleaned up at the end of each day completely, had I not seen the progress of work I would not even known they were there! The end result was beautiful and really tied the open concept kitchen to the rest of my space.

I chose
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
because I liked
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
's energy and enthusiasm when I met him for the estimate. Price-wise, his was neither the highest nor the lowest of the 4+ contractors I met. He seemed to understand what I wanted, and was adamant dust would be controlled (I had already moved into the apartment, unfortunately, before the renovations could start; but most everything was stilll in boxes). However, despite everyone's best intentions, the overall quality of the work was not what I expected.
First, the good:
1.
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
is such a nice guy. Jovial, makes a real effort to connect.
2. The bathroom and kitchen turned out ok. There are some issues, to be addressed below, but overall, nice job.
Next, the not-so-good:
1. Dust was not controlled. I had purchased my own dropcloth, and made my own
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
efforts to cover up the boxes in the living room. I expected
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and his crew to do the rest, especially after
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
explicitly and clearly described creating a wall of dropcloth/tape to ensure my things would be kept as clean as possible. This was far from what happened. They basically threw some plastic over the boxes, but not enough to manage the dust. They didn't even tape up the gaps around the bedroom door or closets, until I asked them to do so, AFTER THE DEMO. When everything was done, there was dust EVERYWHERE. In every book, every corner, every crevice. I had to throw out a few boxes of personal items because I could not clean off the sticky construction dust. I hired 2 different sets of professional cleaners to help me. Almost 13 months later, I'm still cleaning the dust from different surfaces. It's not like regular house dust. It's really really sticky.
2. The tiling in the bathroom was not well done. Almost 13 months later, and there are several cracks in the shower, a hole in the bathroom floor. Similarly, the caulking was not well done. Lots of air holes and dents. I have no recourse but to wait it out and then do the repairs in one sitting.
3. Communications with
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
's staff was terrible. I would have to get in touch with
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
to ask him to have him staff respond to my emails (phone calls were no better - during business hours, calls would go straight to voicemail). Of course, when payment was due, emails and calls were immediately returned. When it came time to select the tiles. I ended up having to purchase them myself. Not because
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
didn't have a good selection, but because no one would return my calls or emails about my selections and the quote! (I ended up getting the tiles at the
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
Tile Store for a fraction of what was quoted to me by
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
).
4. I felt bullied into buying their kitchen cabinets. My apartment is tiny, and I really wanted something minimalist, like Ikea cabinets.
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and his staff strongly (strongly, strongly) encouraged me to go with their preferred cabinets. At that point, a contract was signed, and I was all in, so I didn't feel like I had a choice but to go along with their cabinets. It's ok, but not well-made, so some of the layers are already peeling. I would have been better off with Ikea cabinets at a fraction of the price.
5. It took a really long time to get started. Contract signed at the end of
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
. Cabinets measured in early August. Cabinets arrived in September (delay caused by mis-measurement of one of the cabinets). Demo started 2nd week of September, completed by week of Columbus Day. I think this is a sign they were really busy, but I would have appreciated some more accurate communications about the delay. It was difficult to order things like the tile and appliances, without knowing when they would be needed.
Overall,
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and his staff were perfectly nice people, but I felt like I had been overpromised attention and consideration. This kind of a project is very stressful and there wasn't enough information flowing about timing, what needed to be done, what was needed from me. I know they are not mind readers, but I would have expected a team with way more experience than me to be able to provide some minimal guidance. Then, there were little things like installing the
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
hook or shower neck really high up, even after they met me and saw that I'm like 5 feet tall. It wouldn't have occurred to me to include that in the Statement of Work, but I might have thought professionals would be aware of such things.
Next time, I would remember the following:
1. Try try try to remove as much as possible personal items from the areas to be renovated. I might have been better off trying to rent an empty apartment in the building for the 2 months, just to save myself from the agony of cleaning the dust afterwards. I might have also included something more specific about the dust control in the contract, so that we would have in writing what
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
promised me verbally, along with some consequences, like actual or financial help in cleaning, if the dust was not managed as agreed.
2. Include a specific completion date in the contract. This was definitely an oversight on my part. We had verbally discussed a 5-week completion schedule, and I thought this was from when the cabinets were delivered. Turns out it was from demo, and even then, I had to battle and beg for an end date.
3. I would have gone ahead with the Ikea cabinets. The contract didn't require me to use
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
's cabinets. I would have paid a fraction of the price for the exact look I wanted.
4. I would have asked more questions about the specific crew he was planning to use, and tried to meet the project site manager. I assumed
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
would be the lead on site everyday for the whole project. Maybe if the project site manager had met me, he wouldn't have placed the shower neck and
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
hook so high up on the wall. Maybe.
5. I would have been more thoughtful during the contract review. I have limited experience with renovations and didn't totally think through everything I wanted done. For example, during the estimate walkthrough, I specifically pointed out the crusty radiator pole that needed to be peeled and repainted. The contract described that all bathroom surfaces not tiled would be painted. Yet, during the project, during multiple visits, when I asked that the pole be repainted, the crew refused saying it would add too much time to the project. Again, feeling bullied, I felt I had no choice but to let it go. The whole project was already weeks past what I expected, I didn't want to
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
another 2 days. Now, every time I look at that stupid radiator, I regret not being more aggressive about it, or alternatively, explicitly noting the surfaces to be painted in the contract.
Bottom line, the job was done. It was ok. Did I get my money's worth? Debatable. What I have today is far better than what I had before the project. But, it's not what I was hoping for when I paid this much money.

This is the the third (and largest) project
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked

New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
are a pleasure to do business with.
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
is honest, forthright and, in my opinion, runs his business with integrity....More /> Big picture: Building was built in 1925 so I was retrofitting an apartment that has limits. We discovered a subfloor that required unexpected solutions, we had several iterations of plans to find a venting solution for a W/D and Range hood. In addition, I did not have an interior designer so all decisions (and the learning process involved) were made by me, and sometimes I held up the process. The combination of these things did push the schedule out by 1/3, but this was not due to any lack of diligence on the part of
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
.
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
was the foreman on my job and I can't recommend him highly enough. He is knowledgable, but more importantly he is detail oriented, careful and dedicated to quality work. He problem solves and communicates extremely well, is patient and adds his own creative suggestions if he thinks they will get you what you want.
I'm a bit of a stickler for the details and though that can slow things down, either because I don't like my own decision and want to backtrack (perhaps a contractor's nightmare) or I want something just a little more perfect than it is,
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and his team were always willing to review the issue and do what they could. There is compromise throughout a process like this and I feel that the compromises I made were never due to the contractor refusing to meet my requests.
The final review is the friends and family. Everyone of them was extremely impressed with the quality of the work. I recommend

; upon renovating the store for the Christmas season the board went with
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
after meeting with multiple companies. We were having minor leaks from the roof; first and foremost we had them replace the roof. As we changed the outlook of the store around the design team was very efficient in aiding with the process. They plastered and painted as necessary. The design team was great in helping us sort out color samples and design patterns throughout the store for the holiday season. They worked well and cooperated even during business hours and when closing; the board appreciated their patience and safety precautions taken during the project duration. They also renovated a total of three bathrooms. We are now open and ready for the holiday season thanks to
