"This contractor was fantastic - we couldn't have asked for a more satisfying experience. There was no BS with this man. There was no sales job here - He was business-like and" also had the appreciation of our 130 year old building and gave us the comfort level we needed for him to proceed. He came in on budget, his foreman was great, his workers were great and the materials he recommended and that we used are perfect. His suppliers were excellent. He kept the non work areas protected - The finished product looks as if we spent $25,000 more. We plan on renovating our bathroom next year and won't hesitate to ask
and his team to work with us again.

"I am delighted with results, and equally gratified that the process went so well. I was girded up for an ordeal, which at times it unavoidably was, but was relieved to discover how" easy it was to work with
and his team. I chose him in part because of his quote, which was the cheapest of the four or five estimates I obtained. I called up one of the references he gave me, who advised me that, whatever it took - even if I had to wait - to go with
and C & M. He knew that I would be glad that I did, and he was right. From the beginning I found it very easy to talk to
, and I came to realize that this reflected his genuine warmth, decency, integrity, dependability, and professionalism. He consistently honored his word. I feared he would stretch my job out, trying to juggle it with other jobs. He told me his crew would show up every workday until the job was done. They did. He told me he would be visiting the site every day of work. As far as I know, he did. A multitude of times I would call him with some question or worry. I was amazed that he, pretty much invariably, would take my call, and calmly address the issue, or would quickly call me back, often before I had finished leaving him a voicemail, He always addressed my concern in a way that satisfied and reassured me. (It continues to amaze me that throughout what was, inevitably, a bit of an ordeal, he was always a pleasant person to talk to.) My satisfaction readily extends to those in his team. His point person for renovation work was
(curiously, lots of
and
in his team and extended family of subcontractors).
was ably assisted by
, both of whom were utter gentlemen. For a while they seemed like virtual members of the family, working pretty tirelessly, but as unobtrusively as possible.
exhibited the same combination of masterful professional know-how and good nature that I experienced from
, his boss. I quickly realized that this was the overriding culture of respect, goodwill, and good humor that permeated his organization. A couple of things I learned in the process. Mine was not a garden-variety renovation. I had my own fixed ideas as to what I wanted.
occasionally needed to weigh in with some reality-checks, clarifying where my vision of what I wanted would occasionally depart from what was practically possible. I appreciated his ready willingness to carry out my desires as best he could, consistent with good construction. Part of the job involved enlisting others for specific jobs (e.g., fabrication of the engineered quartz decks, shower enclosure). I was free to get my own estimates from folks I found on my own, but I found it more expeditious to go with folks he worked with in the past, who could generally get the job done more quickly - and at less (or no more) expense. I had some glitches - a couple spots of missed communication that
to some mistakes requiring correction. I was immensely relieved that
the stone fabricator (who has a long history of working with
my contractor) absorbed the time and expense of correcting the problem - even though he may have felt the mis-communication was not entirely his responsibility.
told me he was honorable, and he indeed was. The overriding lesson I learned was that it was quite important for me to stay on top of these subcontract jobs, particularly when the job or design departs from the routine. In conclusion, I'll return to one of the issues that attracted me to Mat in the first place - his low-dollar proposal (or estimate). The job ended up being much more ambitious than I had originally imagined. In fact, he corrected the worst feature of my bathroom - the elevated floor, which also required some significant rerouting of plumbing pipes. Because I trusted
, I didn't worry too much about how much more he would be charging to me. Still, I was greatly relieved that his final bill showed only a modest increase from the initial proposal. It pleases me to be able to recommend
and his team so strongly.

"They were respectful, addressed concerns promptly and they really are good, nice people that aim to please the customer. They are very good tile
. I had porcelain" tile put ceiling to floor as well as pebble tile in the shower. For the most part they did everything with the tile I was hoping for, clean, even and level tile. At one point there were two tile pieces in the box where the grain was very different from the rest of the box and I had forgotten to tell them about it. I was very pleased when I got home from work to find that they had selected the matching tiles and had left those two in the box. I was also very happy with the flawless job they did with my glass shower doors and the built in closet. The pitch in the shower is excellent, it looks almost flat but the water definitely flows away from the walls and to the center, down the drain. My project manager was
. Communications with him were excellent. I really loved sharing my ideas with him as well as I appreciated the fact that he shared his ideas with me which served to enriched the layout plans I has for my bathroom. In the end my bathroom came out exactly as I had wished. I'm looking forward to working with them for my second bathroom remodel.

This part of Don's answer follows my thoughts exactly:

"You want to deal with a professional person that is selling you a bath that was not working as a cashier a few months ago."

Do you go to the gracery store and ask for someone to cook your steak?  Of course not.  So why would you go to a building supply store and ask for someone to remodel your bathroom?  Rarely will you see a legitimate contractor take jobs from a retailer.  Why?  Because they don't pay much.  Speed is the most important thing to them, along with getting it done cheap so they can maximize profit.  About 10 years ago I worked on a few contracted structures (sheds, garages, etc.) from Home Depot.  They contracted to another company who then contracted people to build them.  At that time they paid a flat $250 for a contractor to pick up the supplies, build the structure on site, paint it, and use their own tools.  By the time the cost of a helper, fuel, tools, etc. was factored in there was nothing left for the contractor.  Anyway, the point I'm making is that the guy who will eventually show up to do the work will be so far down the line that everyone else has already taken the profits (Home Depot, ReBath, possibly someone else, and finally the guy working) that he probably isn't going to care what kind of job he does for you, quality or not.  He likely won't have much experience due to a high turnover rate and any experience he does have will probably be limited to his teachings at that job.  He probably can't answer any building code questions or identify other hazards once things are taken apart and he certainly won't do anything he doesn't have to while it is apart.

Another problem I've heard of repeatedly is that if (when) there is a problem there is always someone else you need to speak to.  You might have to talk to 4 or 5 different people before you can even get to someone that can address the problem.  Now multiply that due to having (at least) two separate companies involoved.  "You need to call ReBath."  "No, you need to call Home Depot."

You hire a general contractor for a reason.  We learn, understand, and keep up on building codes.  We are the one point of contact for all questions and issues on a project.  There is no manager in some other store, state, etc. to call.  You contract a GC and deal directly with that GC, or a site supervisor in some cases.  There isn't a huge chain of command to get through to reach the main decision maker for the business.  In a bathroom remodel you need someone who can do the plumbing, repair and/or move any electrical, install tile/flooring, drywall and paint, trim carpentry, and someone to coordinate all of that.  Sometimes you can find a qualified contractor to do all of those things and sometimes he will sub-contract out certain components (especially due to licensing laws) but you will always have that one definitive person to go to for any questions or issues.  A salesman in a store doesn't visit your home throughout the project to check on the status.  Even if he did, he likely wouldn't now what he is looking at.  The same goes for a retail manager.

Hire someone who specializes in taking care of your home.  Hire based on reputation & knowledge/experience.  You are right that not every customer can be happy so an occassional bad review can be found on just about any business.  Read the reviews, not the grades (they are always biased).  Look to see if the contractor attempted to rectify the problem, not ignore it.  Lastly, unless you want cheap, sloppy work and a whole heap of other troubles, don't hire based on a low price.

?
Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
?
What I always ask my customers regarding this question when remodeling bathrooms is how good they will be about maintaining and cleaning the new bathroom, especially when the old bathroom is obviously neglected.  If you are one of those people who wipes the glass down after a shower and cleans your bathroom every week or two you really don't need to spend the extra money.  If you are at the other end of the spectrum and clean it when it finally bothers you enough it may not be a bad investment.  I've had customer tell me they can tell a difference compared to their old glass without it and others say it made no difference at all.

Your basic rights and protections under law are probably outlined by your state and city's laws. In most states, the easiest way to look up your basic rights and privelges as a consumer would be to visit your state's attorney general website - you can usually find lots of great tips to protect yourself as a consumer there, too. Here's the National Association of Attorneys General's national listing, which includes a link to each state's attorney general website: http://www.naag.org/current-attorneys-general.php

Beyond those basic rights under the law, your expectations of a contractor during, on and after the completion of a job should be explicitly outlined in the estimate and contract. Although it can be a pain in the butt, ALWAYS read the estimate and/or contract before sign it! I cannot stress this enough - frequently the cause of someone's negative experiences with a contractor can be traced back to too few details in the contract.

We've covered contracts, and what you should expect to see in them, here: http://www.angieslist.com/contractor/signing-a-contract.htm

Good luck!

New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
did an amazing job with the renovation of my kitchen. While I am responsible for million dollar (software and operational) projects for the major company I work for, I really knew very little about doing a project like this.
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and his crew were terrific right from the beginning - from helping me decide on the layout, making choices on materials, and advising me on selections where I could save money. As Treasurer on the Board of my Coop, I had to make sure that everything was done very much according to the rules, and
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
made sure that was the case. The foreman,
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked

From my first meeting with Osh to working with designer Kristiann and project manager
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
all went great.
Osh immediately creates a rapport of confidence, experience and professionalism. I was interviwing other contractors but after meeting him...I was like, wow, that's the company. If they do what he promises, this will be great. And they did.
The choosing of materials and design with Kristiann, the designer, was smooth and the bathroom turned out great.
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
, the project manager, kept us well informed and was very responsive.
The crew working at home did not speak much English but were very polite and work in a fashion to create the least possible disturbance to the rest of the house.
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
has an outstanding method of working, all materials were at hand before work commencing, from financial management of the project to final touch up stages all very professional and responsive. Any email or call I put through with questions or comments were responded promptly. They are really an amazing well run company and the quality of the work was also very good. I'm looking forward working with them next summer when we will renovate parts of our kitchen.
Heads up...I did find them a bit pricey (though all my friends

was awesome. I first found them on Angie's List and was impressed by the reviews.
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
, the owner, came and helped me with renovation. He was very honest and informative through every step of this process. This helped me to make better decisions.
I worked closely with
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
's team,
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
was the foreman. The entire construction team was courteous, professional, and always showed up on time. There was not a time that I visited my apartment during the construction phase and they were not here and working diligently. They followed my instructions to the tee and if i was not happy they worked closely me to ensure I was happy.
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
was always available to answer my questions and resolve any issues I had during the renovation with both what we agreed upon and any additional needs I wanted.
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
often emailed me pictures of the work he was going to do to make sure it was the way I wanted. For example, before my bathroom floor was installed I was emailed two ways the tile could be applied. I was able to choose the best feature that fit my style. Another example of their "going the extra mile" to satisfy their customer was the customization of their camouflaging a metal pipe that ran through my kitchen. The team was able to build a flawless covering that absolutely looks like it was part of the kitchen. This is just a few examples of the ongoing customer care that they provided over a 7 week period. At the conclusion of the project,
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
came back to fix a few minor issues that I discovered after moving in without hesitation (given all the negative stories you hear about contractors, these guys are not one of them. DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT THEM FOR YOUR PROJECT NEEDS YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!)
A week after the project I received a call from
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
who again wanted to ensure I was satisfied. Again I cannot say it enough, they are extremely professional. My cooperative building, which is quite conservative, asked for my contractor's number (to refer their services) as a result of their work ethic and their ability to comply with cooperative building rules.
I cannot say enough about this company. When asked about the construction in my apartment and the finished product, I can't rave enough about my positive experience with the work and the people at

They did a great job. The two workers,
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
, did beautiful work and were very aware of being in a small apartment in a co-op building in terms of making noise and dealing with the super. The job came out beautiful and the cleanup they did afterwards was outstanding. We had a slight delay because of a custom base arriving a couple of days late from the manufacturer but the management was very responsive. The price was two thirds what Bath Fitters, the big advertisers in the field, quoted and the materials were clearly better. The workmanship is excellent. They uncovered some poor existing construction and fixed it without charge or complaint. Highly recommended.

Was very satisfied with the work. While they did not provide the lowest quote, the price was reasonable. The work was done very well in a timely manner and very professionally. And the administrative support was also very good and nice to deal with. I would highly recommend.

Overall this is a great company with really nice people.
Yoel Piotraut, a managing partner, brought the project in and was very professional and trustworthy.
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
is the person who ultimately managed the project. He is incredibly knowledgeable on every aspect of renovation. No matter what went wrong (and there is always something that goes wrong with renovation!), he doesn't blink - he just takes on the responsibility to address the issues and fix them. He never once complained no matter what it was or what time of day or night.
I started out wanting to only renovate one bathroom but ended up renovating almost the entire apartment - including 2 bathrooms, kitchen backsplash, floors, doors and radiators. Yoel was reasonable on the pricing - a few things were very much over-priced but he was willing to work me on others so that it all worked out fair in the end.
The quality of the plumbing and tiling was outstanding. Most of the crew were meticulous as they worked - things always get broken or go missing in renovation so you have to expect it or you'll go crazy! They all took great pride in their work. That's actually very important because it means they care and want to do a great job for you.
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
was the sub-contractor and I hope he handles every renovation for the rest of my life! He's that good!
There was a lot of micro-managing required on my part in the beginning but once a rhythm was set, it all worked out. We are still waiting to finish up a few last pieces and I hope that doesn't take too long…

I feel bad giving a "C" to this company, as I did not have any renovation work done, I had no major problems with the estimate and the gentleman with whom I dealt was very genial. However, it is a joke to consider the quality of the "plans" I received to be anywhere near $50, much less $450.
The plans were rudimentary at best. It appears they were constructed in Microsoft Paint, or some similar basic program, certainly not a CAD or proper design program. None of the dimensions were to scale. There was no notation or acknowledgement of any of the issues we may have had to deal with in the renovation, such as electrical lines or plumbing lines. With no disrespect intended to C&B, the sketches I prepared myself using some online program were of higher quality (in my opinion).
Some background: I live in a co-op in NYC, and the process to attain approval for any major renovation (which my renovation qualified as) was quite cumbersome. In addition to completing a roughly 50 page renovation agreement, I was required to submit detailed plans for the proposed work. As a result, the offer presented by Angie's List - $50 for a $450 value - seemed too good to pass up.
After having C&B come to see the bathroom, I had 5 other contractors come in to provide an estimate, and several provided design plans of much higher quality for free.
Ultimately, the
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
's share of my disappointment with the deal I purchased
New York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
with Angie's List, not C&B. If there were a way to give Angie's List an "F", and not give any grade to C&B, I would do that in a heartbeat.
Angie's List should not have marketed this offer if it had not done any diligence to test the quality of the product it was endorsing. Note the language of the offer - "Kitchen Master encourages you to buy a coupon for each area you want to remodel... Please don't contact the service provider to purchase this Big Deal; you can only purchase Big Deals through Angie's List" - to my ears, this sounds like an endorsement. Secondly, my friendly advice to C&B would be: do not seek to sell a service that your competitors are giving away for free, especially if you are not providing something of superior quality and value than your competitors.
p.s.: C&B's estimate was fine, however it was clear that the scope of the project was, at that time, probably beyond the capabilities of his firm. I don't have a great way of crystallizing this conclusion - the best I can describe it is that the other contractors asked more insightful follow-up questions to my proposed scope of work. In the end, the actual labor cost of the project was 3.2x the estimate provided by C&B (by comparison, the final actual labor cost was 21% higher than the estimate I received from the contractor I went with, and most of the difference was due to an impromptu decision to move and replace the electrical panel box that was previously in the bathroom).
