I had asked
to look at our air conditioning unit. I made an appointment for him to come this Monday afternoon. I explained to him that the contractor who had designed the unit would also be there as the structure is unusual, and I wanted him to be there to explain the various ways that he has tried to fix the unit in the past. I received the following text from him by way of his cancellation: "Nope if you have a different company working on it I'm not coming let deal with it at one point they will figured out what is wrong."

Scheduling went okay, however when the time came, they were unable to meet the scheduled time between 10:30 and 12:00
We spoke on the phone and I had asked if they would be there by 12, gentleman on the phone said they would call. They did call at 11:40 to say they were on the way however did not arrive till 12:30
The technicians seemed competent for the most part,
They tested the unit and took pressure readings however were not able to diagnose the issue. They installed a capacitor that helps the compressor start , however said that they would have to come back to finish diagnosing the problem.
I agreed, to reschedule another appointment. Thats when they asked to be paid $300 for the service call. I declined and informed them that I would pay for the job in its entirety when completed. They called their boss Arik spoke a bit and thats when things went down hill, fast!
He demanded that I pay, and continued to demand full payment for the incomplete job. This escalated to full on yelling as I continued to decline. There was no
to reason here. He hung up on me and called back the tech a minute later.
No payment was made ,the techs took apart what they had installed and left.
I found the techs knowledgeable, and fairly professional , however the conversation on with their supervisor Arik ended any possibility of concluding this service.

Charged for services that were never performed. This was confirmed via security cameras throughout the property and another heating and air conditioning company.

I'd been using
New York HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
for years, basically by default because they had a sticker on my boiler with the number, none of my neighbors had anything good to say about their heating contractors, and I was, sadly, ignorant of Angie's List.
So every year they'd increase the contract price, way more than the price of inflation, property tax, or even my cable bill! I had problems with my system and they always seemed to patch things but never fix them completely. Often, taking multiple visits to do even that. The only competent tech they ever sent out was
New York HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
, who actually seemed to know how hydronic heating systems worked, and never needed multiple visits to get the heat working.
Turns out the issues with the heat system were due to bad design - no balancing valves were installed, as should have been with the system. No one from
New York HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
ever pointed that out to me, I had to finally figure it out myself after reading tons of stuff online about Hydronic heating systems. Instead they were content to keep me in the dark and on the hook with multiple visits every year to try to get the front of the building heated up, while the back remained 5-10 degrees

Once I finally figured this out, I figured I'd hire them to add the valve. So I called them up to discuss some options, only to have the front office person totally shut me down. Refused to let me talk to anyone about this, insisting I pay for a $150 estimate visit.
I was complaining about this to a friend, who suggested Angie's List. Well, I was pleasantly surprised to find no shills, real reviews, and found an excellent plumber to do the work. And who did a free estimate, and pointed out several missing pieces to my heating system, including a zone control manifold. In other words, he knew his stuff.

organization is old-school - they survived only because their customers had no way of sharing information, or comparing a wide range of other plumbers. They're going to have to update their business model if they're going to survive in the modern world. They can start by getting rid of the attitude in the front office, dropping paid estimates, and adding phone consultation with heating professionals. Until then, I've moved on.

I found
New York HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
thru Angie's, and he is the perfect plumber for me. He respects homeowners that are DIY'ers and quickly figured that out. He does not charge for estimates - very important in my book. He saw I was a DIY'er and suggested I purchase the parts myself - clearly sensitive to the perception that those might be marked up.
I had an odd request for him - my brownstone was lacking zone control valves, and the back of the house, closer to the boiler, was always 5-10 degrees

in the winter. He is very knowledgable about this stuff - not just the parts used, but the theory of hydronic heating system. So we were able to discuss solutions to the issue, and agreed on one - a zone control for the back zone. And he suggested, and explained very clearly, some other enhancements which would be economical to add at the same time (shutoff valves) that would save money on future system work. Also pointed out that I didn't have a low-water shutoff, which meant I could be facing a $4K replacement if there were a leak and the system drained. So, another $100 part, best insurance I ever had.
He even spied a badly soldered joint which was leaking every so slightly, which could have turned into a geyser in a couple of years. So we had our plan, and I ordered the parts online.
When it came to the day of the job, he was there a bit early, with his assistant. They executed the job very professionally, cleaned up after themselves, got the work done in less than the estimated time, and I had the system back online early afternoon so the tenants had heat that night.
Once they wrapped up, he went through all the repairs with me, making sure everything was done. Even gave me some suggestions on some boiler maintenance I could do myself, and a vent opener my erstwhile heating contractor told me I could leave off, that he said could save me a bundle if I replace, which I'm doing this summer.
I went back and checked everything about a month later and found no leaks or anything. He did excellent work.
I'm not sure I'll have to take advantage of his warrantee or any followup, so I can't evaluate

on that. But I couldn't be happier with the job they've done, and already have recommended him to my neighbor.

Stay away from this company.
New York HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
scheduled an appointment with me. I took the day off from work to be home so he could service our air conditioning unit. After not showing up at the appointed time, I called him. He said he was stuck at another job and would call 45 minutes before coming over. He never showed up or called! Very frustrating.
Two days later, I texted him and asked why he didn't show up or notify me. He said he lost his phone. Not professional.

Even though he was extremely busy, he made time on the day we contacted him to come to checkout the A/C's. He was very professional and knowledgeable. No issues with him - I wish all my experiences with contractors and servicemen were like this. :)
