New York dance instructors discuss teaching dance lessons

What styles of dancing do you teach?

Eugene Livshits: "We have ballroom and Latin dancing."

Lori Barzvi: "We offer Latin and ballroom dancing."

Tammy Halaburda: "We offer ballroom dancing lessons."

What's your favorite dance and why?

Eugene Livshits: "My favorite dances are the Latin dances. They're fun and sexy."

Lori Barzvi: "Salsa is my favorite. I love the music, and I love the way it makes me feel when I'm dancing."

Tammy Halaburda: "It goes back and forth between swing and salsa. They're very energetic, and I like the music."

Besides learning how to dance, what are some other reasons people take lessons?

Eugene Livshits: "One of the big reasons is for exercise. Dance changes your life. Also, it's a fun way to socialize."

Lori Barzvi: "A lot of couples come in to prepare for their wedding. Our students consider the studio an extension of their home and enjoy the socialization."

Tammy Halaburda: "They take lessons to meet people, for exercise or to improve their self-confidence. Some people take dance as a creative outlet."

How do you charge for dance lessons and what's the cost?

Eugene Livshits: "We offer an introductory program of two private 30 minute lessons for $60 or six weeks of group classes cost $110."

Lori Barzvi: "A one-hour private lesson is $90 or one group class is $75."

Tammy Halaburda: "Private lessons range from $60 to $85. Or you can take a weekly group class for $60 a month."

Do you offer any types of packages? If so, can you give me a few examples and the price?

Eugene Livshits: "We have several programs, including 10 classes for $220."

Lori Barzvi: "We offer four group classes and four private classes for $400. The more classes you take, the cheaper it gets."

Tammy Halaburda: "We offer a variety of packages combining group classes and private lessons. The cost will vary per package."

Have shows like "Dancing with the Stars" helped your business?

Eugene Livshits: "Absolutely. I think the dancing programs have helped a lot."

Lori Barzvi: "Yes. I think the popularity of all the dance shows has given people the idea to take lessons."

Tammy Halaburda: "No. It makes people aware of ballroom dance, but no one has come in saying they want to dance like Marie Osmond."

How do you handle the most dancing-challenged clients?

Eugene Livshits: "If I had a penny for everyone who said they had two left feet, I'd be a rich man. We're very patient with new students."

Lori Barzvi: "We tell everyone, 'If you can walk, you can dance.' We encourage our students and are very patient with them."

Tammy Halaburda: "The students who have the most fear tend to pick it up quickly. They focus more, and we work at their speed."
