Living with trees in the Pacific Northwest

Large trees like Douglas firs provide wonderful benefits for your yard, but the bigger they are, the harder they fall. A Seattle-area contractor offers tips to make sure your trees are healthy and not prone to falling over.

Lessons from the Bradford pear trees

Once mature, Bradford pear trees often split apart. (Photo courtesy of David Lusk of Lusk Tree Care Services)

Planted extensively in the ’80s and ’90s, the Bradford pear tree became a dominant feature in many subdivisions, on commercial properties and in parking lots. All was well until 15 or more years after planting.

How to plant a tree

'"Right Tree, Right Place’ should take into account the mature size of the tree, not the size you want it to be, as well as ensuring the soil, water, sunlight and climate factors are all favorable for the tree species you are planting,” says Wes Kocher of the ISA. (All photos by Mike LaFollette)

Planting a tree is an easy job, but it takes more skill than you might think. The following tree-planting tips can help ensure you plant a tree that thrives.

3 common tree diseases

Trees add both beauty and value to your property, but like all good things, they also have a downside. Diseases and other conditions can quickly turn a living, vibrant tree into a pile of dead wood.

"100% top notch.
New Orleans Tree Services Provider Name Locked
is honest, smart and confident. His 2 man crew is able to complete any tree job. My trees apparently scared away 2 other tree services for some reason. Highly recommend his services."
A
"Excellent communication from start to finish. Was polite and accommodating - did a professional job for a reasonable price. Will use his services again."

"From start to finish, Mr.
New Orleans Tree Services Provider Name Locked
and his team were very professional. Mr.
New Orleans Tree Services Provider Name Locked
himself answered the phone and scheduled an appointment to come see our tree the very next day. He then was able to cut the tree down, haul off the debris and grind the stump within a week. I've never had a tree cut down before, but a contractor friend of mine said that Mr.
New Orleans Tree Services Provider Name Locked
's price was very fair. All I know is that I was very impressed by Mr.

's responsiveness and professionalism.

"It went very well. The tree was in my neighbor's yard and close to their house. Mr.
New Orleans Tree Services Provider Name Locked
climbed up into the dead tree with climbing equipment while his helper cut up the pieces and got them into the trailer. I was very pleased with the work. They cleaned the yard thoroughly when done."

"
New Orleans Tree Services Provider Name Locked
is the owner, operator of his tree service. He answers his phone and and is always friendly and professional. Since I have worked pruning apple orchards, I could describe exactly how I wanted the tree trimmed. I wanted flush cuts and trimmed so that it still looked natural and not chopped. He agreed completely and he quickly and easily did the job as promised. He was also adept at doing as little damage to the garden as possible with the falling branches."
A
"It went well, all told. A few issues, however. The "estimate" is not an estimate. You are handed a document to sign. If you read the fine print carefully, it is actually a binding contract to have work performed. The man who does the estimate is very "high energy," but quite pleasant. However, he does not point out the fact that, once YOU sign, you are contracting to get work done, and NOT obtaining an estimate. If ONLY HE signs, then it is an estimate. Beyond that, the tree cutting guys could have been a bit more careful while dragging the cut branches along the side of my house. The branches could have been cut into smaller pieces, and thus scratched the siding less. This is a minor point, but if you have a painted house, or are concerned about these things, it's worth mentioning. Beyond that, the actual guys who do the cutting know exactly what they are doing, they clean up after themselves very well, and are overall quite professional and very speedy!"
