Remodeling Reviews in Minneapolis

I have been very lucky with the dozens of contractors I've worked with, and this is my "bad apple" experience. I wasn't going to write a review, because I'm a contractor myself and know how damaging a bad review can be. But I was notified that some Angie's customers requested a review on his work, so here we go.
started out great, very personable, fair pricing estimates and the timeframe was perfect. He'd also done a beautiful job on my mother's kitchen a few years ago, so of course I chose him to do the work. He was going to bring another guy over the 2 days, but
turned out to be the only person working on the kitchen other than the 1/2 day when he brought his teenage son, who hadn't done this work before and needed constant supervision. I don't think he ever spent more than a couple of hours at a time working on the kitchen, always with some explanation like he had to pick up a
, or his teenagers had some event or he just didn't show up when he said he would. What was supposed to take 2 days, instead took 3 weeks. When I talked to him about it he said, "well you're not even living here." Other weirdness included how he mocked and disrespected the countertop fabricator, calling him Vladimir Putin because he was Russian born and they disagreed on how to hang the undermount sink.
Unfortunately I paid
for the work he had done before the job was complete, and I had to find and pay someone else to finish the work. The pantry had to be reinstalled. The opening for the dishwasher had to be entirely rebuilt. Shelving didn't fit and had to be recut. I even talked to a kitchen guy at IKEA about
, and this guy couldn't believe it either. He knew
from a few years ago when they worked together at IKEA, and agreed that this did not sound at all like

. Like I said, I have been very lucky.

I chose painted wood cabinets, which were a bit more pricey than others but the design was what I wanted.
discouraged wood because it would expand and contract seasonally in Minnesota weather. In hindsight, I should have been resolute in my choice. When the drawings came, the cabinet fronts were "beadboard" design and some kind of heat foil-wrap was spec'd as the finish. The wrap has separated from the base. I checked Medallion's warranty, and it explicitly excludes melting or bubbling of the foil wrap if the cabinets are near any heat source, which is impossible to avoid in a kitchen --
, toaster, coffee maker, etc.
So all in all, I made a bad choice of kitchen cabinets based upon
's recommendation. I planned to replace kitchen cabinet doors in about 20 years, but now it looks like that will happen much sooner.

Was able to schedule an estimate quickly - late show for estimate. TC Home Remodeling was unenthusiastic and declined to create an estimate after kitchen and bath remodel was explained on site but scope of job was explained over the phone before creating appointment. Waste of time.

Minneapolis Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
is an excellent company. They started the project on April 14 and it was completed on May 26 (which was the timeline promised). First met with

Grindland (owner) and Kian

(designer) in March and explained what we wanted to do. Project involved removing a door into the kitchen, removing a wall between kitchen and diningroom, moving the sink from one area into a penisula between the existing kitchen and diningroom.

and Kian got back to us in two weeks to thoroughly go over the bid. At the time, we felt the bid was high, but definitely in the ballpark of other bids we had received. We decided to go ahead with the project. They Installed hardwood floor in kitchen, hung new lights and cabinets, removed all carpeting from livingroom and hallway and refinished and stained floors (1938 red oak) so all matched new floor in kitchen. Installed new vanity, toilet and shower head in bathroom.

(electrician) and

(plumber) couldn't have been better. Easy to work with, very considerate and very quick to fix any concerns we had. We did have a problem with the floor stain initially, but

saw to it that the floor was the color we wanted and not the one the initially applied by the floor sub contractor. All in all it was a pleasant experience (if having your house torn up for 6 weeks can be pleasant) and the result is spectacular.

Met with estimator the beginning of June about getting a bid. After several calls have not heard back and no estimate for work. Moved on to another contractor.

Minneapolis Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
is very friendly, extremely knowledgable and brought a lot of great ideas and suggestions to the meeting we had with him. The quotes we got for each of the projects were very reasonable and each was described in a very good level of detail so we could understand exactly what he was proposing to do and how he would do it. We haven't yet started any of the projects but we are looking forward to getting the first one started later in the summer.

The job went very well, no problems.
Minneapolis Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and his crew were courteous, experienced, and professional.

was easy to get a hold of by phone, text, and email and gave us great suggestions when we were stumped on exactly what we wanted for our new deck. He was also flexible when we needed to have a tree removed in our backyard (unrelated to this construction job) and assembled a temporary fence to keep our dog safely in our backyard while our fence was down as well as a temporary fence around the new grass seed areas. This is our second time hiring

and we would hire them for future jobs as well.

The finished house is better than we planned and far exceeded what we had originally planned. The ideas
Minneapolis Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
had and the execution of those plans were both top notch. His suggestions about changing some flooring and cabinets turned out fantastic and look and will work better than our original plan. He made suggestions, but was in no way pushy about it-the choices were fully ours to make. He took care of a few details that we had overlooked telling him about in the first place, and he especially has been wonderful to work with. Overall, I couldn't be happier with how
Minneapolis Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and Remodeling took care of our house. We were, frankly, pretty nervous about having to be gone while most/all of the work was being done. Due to the contact and updates (with pictures, often times) that we had with them, it was not painful at all.
I hate writing reviews where I
Minneapolis Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
a company all A+ and glowing comments, but I have nothing to complain about here. This has really been great with them from start to finish.
I would very confidently recommend them to anyone!

She wasn't very helpful and we ended up coming up with all of the
ideas. She didn't seem very interested in our project and we heard a
lot of "yeah, that would be nice." After having two other people come
and give us estimates, we found out that there were some things that she
said sounded good that would break city code. For example, we
mentioned putting some lighting above our counter top and she never
brought up the fact that if we do any electrical work in our kitchen
that everything will have to be brought up to code (giving the microwave
it's own circuit, among others). We also wanted to extend our counter
top to accommodate bar stools, which would mean that we would have to
move our outlet over so that it would be a certain distance from the end
of the counter top. Both of the other people that came to look at our
kitchen mentioned these things. We ended up going with a different
contractor and we would not go with Castle in the future.

When I they finished, they told me that the caulking where the tub meets the floor and walls had needed to be done, as well. I had heard the drill going and they told me they had taken out some of the grout, saying it shouldn't have been directly grouted at the tub line.
The caulk lines were thick and uneven. It looked awful and I asked them if they could narrow the caulk line with a razor. They did and when they finished I realized that the job they did only made it worse. I simply thanked them and they left. I knew immediately that I needed to have it redone. It made me sick that I had assumed a company on Angie's list wouldn't be anything but top notch. Even when checking the ratings on the site, my guess is that in some cases the owners and/or top people do not come out to do a job.
I'm now very hesitant to purchase Angie's Deals unless I do a lot of research into the company. I put off writing a review and even dealing with a fix due to other financial commitments.
I am having an estimate done tomorrow through Angie's Concierge and the Snap Fix program.
