He knew we had an issue just by looking at it from the outside. He offered to replace the hood with a screen to keep animals out and I agreed it needed to be done. He took a look at our basement fireplace even though I wasn't having that one cleaned and we learned another valuable piece of information. He told me that because the fireplace is below the frost line, it will never be usable as a wood burning fireplace. He suggested considering a gas insert for the basement. The door to our ash chute was broken and not up to code. He offered to brick over the opening upstairs to alleviate the problem and suggested doing the same in the basement at a later time. I had never liked the ash chute and found it to be more of a nuisance than anything. So I was thrilled that he had the tools and the time to do that as well.
