"I started using this spring and they have done a wonderful job. the owner is very tentative and customer orientated." He makes himself very available. My previous landscaper let the weeds in the flower beds get out of control and 's guys came in and kept my yard looking really good all year long. It has provided me piece of mind knowing that I never have to worry about my yard being and I know it will always be in great shape.

"In June, 2013, after looking at reviews and getting three estimates, I chose Mr. Nelius's group, Solo Landscaping, to perform some landscaping on our house" we had just renovated and moved into. Both the front and back yard needed slightly leveling and then sod placement. Mr. Nelius suggested Zoysia Palisade for the back yard and Bermuda for the front yard, which we went with. We discussed the need to level certain parts of the yard to prevent puddling. I also asked Mr. Nelius if it would be beneficial for me to do any prep work myself - like killing weed grass or removing rocks/stones - he said they would do all the ground prep. Mr. Nelius was very prompt - he responded to my initial request for a quote immediately and came out to give a quote within days. Within two weeks, he had completed the work - it all being done in about a half a day. He was available by phone and returned calls within the day, and did most of his business by email so that quotes were in writing - also responding within a business day. His quote was not the least expensive for the work, but very close - so I chose him based on his promptness and eagerness to do the work. On the day of the work, he and his crew arrived when he said they would. They went to work on the front yard, and Mr. Nelius was working with them. They worked very hard and quickly, removing and old fence post, leveling the yard appropriately, and tilling the yard adequately. I left for work as they were beginning to prep the back yard. Mr. Nelius also left around that time, leaving the work to his crew. When I saw the completed work later in the day, I was a little disappointed, but thought it would improve when the grass had time to take and grow a bit. The parts that I was unhappy with: - the quality of Bermuda sod was poor - it was full of nut grass weed that I spent the entire summer try to control. It was from the sod itself, not the prepped ground - it grew immediately from the sod itself and not at the seams. With pre-emerge over the winter, I was able to better control it this second summer. - In the side yard, they mixed Bermuda and Zoysia, which still looks terrible. However, the part of the work that most frustrated me (and proved I wasted my money) was the quality of work in the back yard. The yard had not been prepped at all for the sod, and none of the leveling was done. Most of the sod was laid over barely-tilled ground with no concern about drainage or depth of soil. This had been specifically discussed in our initial discussions. Any amount of rain would cause pooling of water in large puddles in the middle of the yard. Other parts of the yard had such poor prep that the grass never really established itself - I later found out why. I spent most of the summer trying to nurse the back yard to life to no avail. After laying dormant over the winter, very little of the Zoysia made it to the second summer. This second summer, my back yard was virtually a mud pit and couldn't be used by my kids if it had rained at all recently. Late in the summer, I decided to rent a tiller and try to level the yard myself - so for $40, I got a small tiller from Home Depot and tilled up about 1/3 of the yard in an hour. I found that many areas of the yard had bricks and slabs of concrete less than 1/2" below the surface, which is why the grass never established in those areas. Using just my hands and a landscaping rake, I removed quite a few stones/bricks/blocks and leveled the worst part of the yard in less than 2 hours. I purchased a of fresh-cut Zoysia sod from Nature's Earth Products on Summer Ave and laid the sod myself in less than an hour. Except for one tiny area that wasn't getting irrigation well, the grass is well established and draining very well - no puddles. I still need to fix another 1/3 of the yard, but I corrected the worst areas and decided to build a play area over another bad part. The yard is usable once again. Before I decided to re-do the yard myself, I tried to contact Mr. Nelius several times by phone and email in late summer of 2013 and again in of this year (2014.) My calls and emails were not returned, so I contacted him through his website. Only after I advised him that I planned on writing an Angie's List review did he reply and said his email had changed. I explained my problem with the back yard and asked if he would be willing to at least offer advice or help on how to correct the problem. I sent lots of pictures, both of the problems seen within days of his work and the resulting mud pit a year later. He never replied. Below are copies of the emails. In summary, I believe Mr. Nelius's business is based on volume and not quality. His price was very fair and he was very fast in getting the job done. He was very professional and easy to work with until there was a problem. I do believe that his crew was responsible for the poor quality work when left unsupervised by him - I wonder if it would have been better (like the front yard) if he had been present. For my part, I should have persisted in getting him to come back the first summer of the work, though I hoped a season to get established would help the problems. I also should have written down more details about our agreement to prep and level the yard before simply laying down the sod. ===== Subject: Re: invoice Date: May 31, 2014 at 3:23:52 PM CDT To: Nelius Mr. Nelius, You put sod down at our house last June, and we’ve frankly been very disappointed with the back yard. The yard was not properly leveled or prepped as we had discussed, so the sod did not root well, and there are many low areas that collect water. Most of the yard is now a big mud pit. The front yard - which was in worse shape - was better prepared and looks great. You ’t likely remember, but you were personally present for the entire work on the front yard, but were not for most of the back yard work. I suspect the quality of work was substantially different. I’ve attached pictures of the back yard - the first is from last , and the second from a few weeks ago (the playground was just built this month.) I’m hoping you will offer any suggestions or would be willing to help correct his problem. ===== On Jul 15, 2014, at 12:43 PM, wrote: Mr. Nelius, I generally write reviews for services I find on Angie’s List, such as your landscaping. residential lawn sprinklers

Lawn Irrigation & Sprinkler Systems

Watering your lawn sounds simple enough, but many people don't do it correctly, even when they invest in automated irrigation systems. An inexpensive timer is the best investment whether you're using buried water lines or a garden hose.

Freezing temperatures are a major threat to your irrigation systems. Learn how to avoid costly repairs in the spring.

Installing an automatic irrigation system means you won't forget to water the lawn again. Learn about the cost, and whether you should hire a professional.

A common issue for lawns this spring will be damage from the 2010 damage. As we move into warmer weather and the lawns begin to come out of winter dormancy, those damaged areas will begin to stand out and could take one to two years to fully correct.

Cost depends of course on your locale, and distance to nearest pit or quarry that carries your desired type material. Be careful also where fill is coming from - you don't want someone pawning off a load of construction/demolition or land clearing debris or petroleum/chemicals contaminated waste on you.

Generally, in broad terms and excluding inner cities where delivery round-trip time is long due to distance from pits and slow traffic or very remote areas far from material source, the delivery charge or trip charge will normally run from $50-150 per trip, plus cost of material being hauled. Note you may be quoted just a per-ton (or per cubic yard for topsoil commonly) price based on a full truckload which would include trip charge and material charge. Others will quote separately, and some will forget to quote trip charge and only give material price. For instance, if you call and say "what does topsoil run per yard" they may say $30 - neglecting to say you will be charged a trip charge for the truck trip regardless of whether you buy 1 yard or 25 yards, so if $150 trip charge would be net $180/cy for 1 yard, but  $40/cy net if a 15 yard full truckload, for instance - so get clear on TOTAL cost for specific amount of material. I am always amazed at hearing hauling contractors gripe about rejected loads because when they showed up the homeowner did not realize there was a trip charge - and of course many times the driver dumps it BEFORE getting payment - BAD idea, as it costs more to get a loader in there to pick it up than to just give it to them without charging for the haul.

General round numbers for types of materials (and some areas may fall outside even these broad ranges) - common (unclassified) fill around $3-12/ton, sand/gravel around $5-15/ton, sand/gravel or crushed rock screened to a specific specification (like for clean drain rock or pea gravel or driveway base or structural fill or such) $12-30/ton, cobbles and crusher oversize (generally 2" plus material to about 12-18 inches - size varies by source) $15-40/ton, quarry spalls (mostly 1/2-6") with some fines and occaisonal up to 12 inch shot rock roughly about $15-40/ton, small riprap (6 inch to maybe 2 foot) $35-100/ton, large rirrap (2 foot plus) $50-250/ton, topsoil $5-50/cubic yard, decorative garden/yard rock $40-500/ton depending on fanciness and how far away imported from. Wide price range because some areas have numerous close sources, other have to go to great effort to produce certain sizes - especially with crushed highly durable rock and riprap, where it may be very hard to find good quality bedrock sources like in the lower Mississippi valley and areas of the midwest with heavy glacial sourced cover over the bedrock. Ditto to topsoil, where very cheap in some midwest areas with active subdivision development producing waste topsoil, to very expensive in some far northern and desert-like and near-beach areas where topsoil is virtually non-existent.

If you are going to be walking on this material, for kid play areas you want rounded river gravel or sand because it moves around and cushions falls better, but for walking areas/paths you generally want crushed materials so it does not move and scrunch around under your feet, though with decorative stone each particular type will only come one way - like rounded river rock, or angular reef limestone or lava rock.

Topsoil, in areas which a choice of sources, you need to specify if you want loam/loess (silty, sandy with little organics), clayey, peat/organic rich, or blended (organic plus sand) to reduce packing and caking and improve drainage.

Typical load size - small individual hauling companies haul 1/2-2 tons/load in small pickup or trailer loads, common dump truck sizes are around 8-10 ton capacity for single axle, 12-15 tons double rear axle, and 18-25 tons for belly or tilt dump trailers - and some contractors have "pup" trailers than haul about another 8-10 tons on same trip if needed. However, in urban areas weight restriction may prevent full loading - ditto during spring breakup in areas with road weight restriction to protect roads that are thawing out.

Rough BALLPARK estimating numbers - about 1.3-1.5 tons per dumped (uncompacted) cubic yard except for topsoil, which can run 0.8-1.3 tons per cubic yard depending on moisture and organics content.

Excavation contractor is AL search category I think and I believe I saw a Topsoil category once - but if you google you can find Topsoil and Gravel/Rock haulers, then check them against AL for reviews. For small quantities (a truckload or two) of topsoil, or specialty landscaping rocks, then a landscaping/plant center is sometimes your best source, though pricier for common materials than from a local topsoil or gravel pit or rock quarry, becdause they have apid to have it hauled to them, then have to pay to have it scooped up and hauled to you, plus their own profit and overhead costs so plant centers commonly about double direct from pit costper ton or yard.

Because of the harsh winter Memphis experienced in 2013/2014, L & L irrigation noticed our back-flow pipe was busted, which prevented him from performing the necessary maintenance at that time. He was able to give me a contact for a plumber to service the pipe, which I used and all worked out well with him, too.
Once the back-flow pipe was ...More repaired, L & L was able to come back to complete the service on our irrigation system, which was an easy, no hassle process.
I will gladly use L & L for all of our irrigation needs.

I was not sure if the report for the Backflow would be sent to the city I will have to call them. The tech couldn't answer the question. In the past the back flow would disassemble the unit and inspect for wear, this test was seemingly less thorough. And the tech would send my report for me, unsure if this will happen ...More yet. I may have to adjust the sprinklers myself later as not sure if the time level or days of watering are adequate or overkill???

First call to company- I spoke with receptionist and was told I would recieve call from designer to schedule appointment. Never got a call. I called back 2 weeks later (because Angie's reviews were good). Finally got scheduled for appointment. Unfortunately, designer no-showed for first appointment. Apologized later, and said there was a family ...More emergency. But that definitely set the . Future dealings went well. Designer rescheduled, met with me, creating design for backyard, and gave a timely quote for the project.
The bid was similar to bid I recieved from a different company, and based on those initial experiences described above, I went with the other company.

is great, he called me back the day I left him a voicemail and then showed up on the day he said he would and called when on the way. Great guy, reasonable price for the work and he had his daughter working with him the day he came to my house. I like a family owned business. I would recommend him to anyone.

My sprinkler line was damaged when my flower beds were being redone. I knew it was a job because I had seen it done before but was leery of trying to fix the line myself. The first plumber I called said the line fix would be $150. The second plumber I called usually does by back flow tesing. He told me they could fix it but ...More they would charge $95 for the service charge. He didn't want me to have to spend that kind of money (very nice of him) and gave me Mr. Clifft's name and number. Mr. Clifft said he could fix it for $30 and could come out the next day. He was punctual, friendly and worked fast. He repaired the line then noticed I had a busted sprinkler head when we were testing the repaired line. He replced the broken sprinkler head in less than 5 minutes and asked if there was anything else I wanted him to look at. I then had him adjust the direction of another sprinkler head's spray. Total pricce $40.00. Very nice guy. I will use him for all my sprinkler/ irrigation system repairs.

The system is working just fine. We have used it two summers now and it is working properly. There are no problems with water leakage or back ups in the system. My landscaper hired and paid them for me. I was not at home so I never met them but they left no mess or even any signs that any work was even done.
