Woodworking reviews in Madison

The setting is a 1908 house with a basement door that needed replacement. None of the existing work was square, level or in a standard size. The clearances for a new door were very tight. He took his time and did some checking before deciding on the best ways to replace an old door in this setting. The work was done in stages since some areas of new concrete needed to be poured. The outcome was excellent. I feel I have a new door that works perfectly and will last a long time. Communication was excellent. All debris was hauled and he used his shop vac to clean up fine debris. It was excellent work for a fair price. He is skilled and patient with old houses.

and his crew were fantastic. He not only came in WAY below any other quotes that I got, but he also really understood what I wanted (just a bathroom face lift, really), had amazing suggestions, did phenomenal work, was punctual, responsive, cat-friendly, and cleaned up after he was done. He even helped me with a few other projects unrelated to the bathroom while his crew was there at no additional charge. He was the only contractor I heard from who was okay with only doing parts of the room and letting me do the rest to save on cost. He even offered to loan me tools to finish up the job!
When I noticed a drip the day after the installation, the man dropped everything and came over to fix it immediately. He then checked in with me a few times by phone to make sure everything was going well
He was respectful and very patient with me. As a first time home buyer, I had a million questions and really wanted to watch and learn about what he was doing.
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
didn't just let me watch; he taught me along the way and reassured me about the things he knew I could do myself, and what might be better left for professionals. His ideas were really helpful to me and on-par with what it is that he knew I was hoping to accomplish in this house. Unlike other contractors, his suggestions were never the BMW of options for my Toyota of a house/budget. I've heard amazing things about his custom cabinetry made from locally-sourced wood. That's high up there on the list of the next projects I'm going to call him for.
I almost don't want to review him for this site because I'd hate for his calendar to fill up by the time I need him again. He's the only person I'll ever call. Gosh, I'm really trying not to make this sound like the guy is my BFF or anything. First time I met him was for the bathroom-- honest!

finished our 650 sq ft attic in the spring/ summer of 2013. While this project sounds
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
and could have been performed at 1/3 of the cost by others we wanted the best quality and to meet very high performance standards.
I am an engineer by profession and I was impressed with the attention to detail and knowledge of the
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
workers in implementing a conceptually
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
construction project that in practice required skill and in-depth knowledge of building systems. Our goal was to take an uninsulated attic and covert it to conditioned space with the highest level of energy efficiency and without expanding the home HVAC system. We therefore needed the highest level of insulation and envelope sealing to maintain a comfortable living space with very little demand on the house furnace or air conditioning systems. Our house also had a pre-existing whole house fan that we use to cool the house in the summer months where cool night air is drawn into the house at night that keeps the house cool during warm days and greatly reduces our air conditioner and electric use. The whole house fan previously vented to the unconditioned attic. A design challenge to
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
was to insulate and finish the attic and to maintain the function of the whole house fan.
The work involved two-part epoxy foam insulation installed in the rafters and collar ties of the attic trusses. Extensive preparation work was involved to maintain a 1 inch air gap under the roof decking to provide for airflow from the soffit vents to the roof ridge vent. This detail was important to keep the underside of the roof deck vented to manage heat and moisture and to prolong the life of the asphalt roof shingles. Gables on the attic were prepared for insulation by constructing thermal break wall studs to prepare a wall cavity to accept the foam insulation. The portion of the attic floor which was over an uninsulated porch were opened up and foamed between the floor joist to complete the exterior insulation envelope. These were all essential details to get the project right.
The function of the whole house fan was maintained by venting the fan to a constructed air plenum in the attic trusses above the existing collar ties. This was a conceptually

but complex design that required careful separation of conditioned and unconditioned spaces and provide for venting of 1,700 cubic feet per minute (the fan's flow rate, and yes that is a lot of air to move around) through the roof ridge and soffit vents.
I am providing some of the details on the project to illustrate that what may seem to be a
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
project can actually be a complex undertaking to achieve the project goals. As an engineer I was in a position to be involved in and to evaluate the many design decisions and I was impressed with the knowledge and skill of the

team. The air sealing performance of
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
work was independently verified by a 3rd party energy auditor using a blow door test. All materials used on the project were of the highest quality.
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
was not inexpensive but we are very pleased with our comfortable attic space that in 15 below zero weather; 650 square feet of space can be heated with a small electric heater and for much of the year requires no heat of air conditioning.
With any contractor one has to be clear with direction and expectations. Once a contract is approved later change orders will add to cost and the owner has to be careful make sure the charges fit the work.
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
was not the cheapest contractor we could have worked with but we are pleased with the project and if we had to do it again we would definitely hire

After having
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
help us with the remodel of our staircases (we had new floors put in and needed to replace and match the stair wood to the floor), I cannot speak more highly of him as a person and as a craftsman. He was in our home nearly daily for over a month and I can speak to the quality of work he does and the quality of a person he is. He is extremely detail oriented, thorough, knowledgeable, experienced and truly cares about the work he does.
After meticulous measurements and helping us order the proper wood to replace all of our stair parts, he proceeded to install the new parts and coordinate with our floor installer (
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
- also a fantastic craftsman) regarding the staining and finishing of the wood. I truly feel he treated the job just like it was his own home. He even pointed out that one of the posts we purchased appeared to have cracked and recommended that we get it replaced despite the fact that this would likely delay the job (and make it more difficult for him to finish and proceed to his next job)--I have a strong suspicion other people would have not be willing to take the delay and would have just installed it anyway and kept us in the dark.
He is a wonderful person and really was never a bother despite being in our house near daily for about a month. Some could argue that he works slowly, but if you see the quality and care he puts into his work, I think it's pretty evident that it's worth it.
His schedule is often quite tight as he does the work himself, so if you have a stair project, I recommend you talk to him as soon as possible.

I just had my living room, kitchen/dining room painted – and I love it!
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
was very helpful, he even dropped off some sample paint to try out when I was deciding colors. The edging and attention to detail is amazing. I feel like I’m in a new house! Thanks!

I first contacted
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
after a flooring person tore out two of my steps and, not know what to do, left them like that. Although
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
was busy building a staircase for a Parade of Homes home, he took time out from his busy schedule to come to my house to provide a temporary fix so that we could access the upper level of our home.
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
did excellent, painstaking work while being very mindful of keeping dust to a minimum and cleaning up as the job proceeded and after the work was completed. He also offered to provide/provided a handrail left over from a previous job.
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
is a true craftsman, who takes genuine pride in his work. As such, he is currently in great demand. Therefore, if you're contemplating using his services, plan ahead and be patient. It is well worth the wait!

The carpenter was very meticulous and easy to work with. The end result was, therefore, quite good. The insulator was pretty good, but left some messes behind for someone else to deal with. The drywaller was OK but left a lot of mess which he didn't want to take care of himself. The carpenter lost interest toward the end to some extent, and it took forever for him to finish the last details. It was over 6 months for the job to be completely done, and
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
had promised the job would be done in a month. In retrospect, this was clearly unrealistic, but 6 months was rather a long time to wait for completion.
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
only seemed interested during the money discussions. I expected him to be more hands-on. I rarely saw him except when he was trying to get the business at the beginning (and he was always late to our meetings) and at the end when he wanted to be paid. Bills came before the work was finished, which didn't seem right to me.

Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
and his partner Pat did everything that needed to be done for this job and more, and did it expertly and efficiently. They started the job by sealing off other areas of the house to prevent dust migration. When they removed the washer/dryer and bathroom fixtures and then put them in the garage, it was done in such a way that we could still pull in our cars. When they left in the evening, everything was clean and orderly. In terms of the tiling job, we presented them with a somewhat unusual tile size for the area, but that was no problem as they came up with a number of layout options. We are delighted with the pattern and workmanship. Moreover, they finished off what was left unfinished by previous owners such as baseboard quarter-rounds, replaced the dryer vent hose, and restored and cleaned every area to perfect condition. We are thoroughly pleased and look forward to scheduling more projects with
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
in the future.

Work went well....the sanding was done well but it seemed that they had not done this type of work that often....once the old finish was off, the crew stained the deck and railings and the deck looks like new

We purchased a new front door and storm door from our local Hardware/Lumber store. The doors arrive primed but not painted.
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
(BTD)recommended front and back be painted the same color when we wanted the inside and outside different he strongly recommended the same color. We went with white and he was working on another job so took the doors and returned weeks later to install. Without taking the storm door out of the box he said it would not fit. I called the store where we purchased the doors and was assured the storm would fit but might need some adjusting. We were encouraged to return the storm door and he recommended a wooden version that cost more. When it arrived it was definitely a sub standard brand. The screen insert was uneven and the glass insert had a lot of glue on the glass. We just wanted the job done, by this time months had passed since hiring BTD. Door was installed, storm door was installed and hardware purchased by BTD was installed. Two weeks late the door knob looked like it was 10 years old. We followed up to have it replaced and were told we could purchase a replacement and he would install it but not pay for a new knob. We have since painted the outside of the doors and hired a lock
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
to replace the door knobs.
Door molding was installed but not sanded or painted. We finished.
Door to basement installed, cut to fit, not painted and
Madison Carpenters Provider Name Locked
put original paint encrusted door knob back on rather than the new knob.
