Internet Service reviews in Madison

I had been a AT&T

customer for years - internet/phone only(I had quality issues with pixelizing of TV portion). Performance was rock solid and reliable so I figured even though it was expensive after being out of contract(about $100 for 18Mbps), I'd keep with it. Called to set up service. They need to send a tech out verify if service was available. They did not call me back by the date they said they would. So I call them back again to find out if I can continue service with them. Turns out they didn't verify the new address, but did the old address....WHERE I CURRENTLY HAD service!Told me it could be up to another 10 days before I could have service verified and installed. I was already moved in at this point. I decided to go with another provider that offered faster internet at about 1/2 the cost out of contract. Bottom line is there were a bunch of mistakes on their end. They admitted so much when I called to cancel all remaining service with them.

The only service appointment ATT has kept as promised was installation. Since then they have not only missed every single service appointment but doing so once left me with an extra 14 hours of their equipment making a high-pitched whine so intense it induced a migraine. The worst was when they broke a promise made to my neighbor who called for me to send a service person same day when their line was down across my driveway leaving us with no telephone service and no means to call 911 in the event of an emergency and my daughter has T1 Diabetes: a life threatening disease and of which my neighbor did inform them when she called for me. The next day they denied making the promise, informed us that "dispatch determines the priority of repairs". Apparently, human life isn't one of them. When the repairman did arrive, he noted that downed lines were to have been the priority the previous day and that at the time my neighbor called, he was 1/4 mile directly up the street. Dispatch sent him to another town for a repair that did not involve a downed line. Since then, ATT is completely unremorseful referring to this as a

"temporary loss of service" rather than the life-endangering incident it was. I am speaking with an attorney about a possible lawsuit. This could have cost my daughter her life.

The phone service is fine. Internet is all right but sometimes pretty slow. Customer service is terrible -- sales people quote prices that don't include all sorts of add-on fees, bills are extremely confusing, and you get shuttled from one customer service person to another and yet another when there is a problem.
After we switched to AT&T based on their inaccurate price quotes we wanted to change back to TDS, our old service provider, but they were no longer taking customers.

Overall I have been very pleased with my
Madison Internet Service Providers Provider Name Locked
service. When I call Customer Service there is always a human! who answers and not a machine. It is a very folksy and down-to-earth company. If there is a problem with the service, I have called and talked with someone and the representative always walks me through the problem until we get it solved. Before traveling anywhere I call them and get all the access numbers for the places I will be. Overall, it is an excellent service and nice to support a local company.

Pretty awful. Each time I called I got a different customer representative, which is fine, but they clearly were not talking with each other. I was given different information; one person seemed to know more than another; one person would tell me I had a defective modem while another said the modem was fine (this was after I had to request another one). Services I asked for were not on my order and services that were on my order I did not ask for! Maybe one out of 15 customer representatives I talked to said, "I'm sorry for all the inconvenience." This was after I waited three days from 8-5 for a representative to show up. They were very clear that they were coming "tomorrow." That happened three times. Amazing. While now, several weeks later, service seems fine, (though the DSL is not as fast as I expected) the beginning service was terrible. There was little reason why I would have chosen

except for the fact that I my order was already in, and the phone was switched.

The only service appointment or telephone call back kept as originally scheduled was installation. This has resulted in my enduring equipment making a high pitched whine continuously for 48 hrs to the point that it induced a migraine headache so severe I was vomiting. The most horrendous example was this last winter. Their line came down across my driveway, left me with no services--most importantly telephone so I had no way to call 911 if needed and I have a daughter with Type 1 Diabetes. (My ATT cellphone gets no service in my house.) My neighbor reported the situation, including the medical imperative for service, and was promised someone would be out that day. No show. The utility company moved the line when my neighbor asked them to (they were in the neighborhood repairing utilities). I was able to get out of the house the next morning and called them. They claimed they told the neighbor it would be the next day. When a repairperson finally showed late that afternoon, he told me that he was only .25 mile up the road when my neighbor's call was placed and that downed lines were supposed to be a priority.

KNOWINGLY ENDANGERED A HUMAN LIFE. and they have made it clear that this was not a

--they truly do not care. I will be discussing this with an attorney.

I have had issues with Charter email for several months that have gone unresolved. I do not use Outlook or any other system to grab my email from Charter. I go online to and hit the "email" button, which requires log in. Fine.
Their online email system, first of all, is just terrible. Worst spell checker ever. EVER! There are so many things you cannot do that are routine for other systems. But the worst part is that it freezes up in the middle of working on an email. I'll be typing along, then it gets glitcy. The backspace won't work. Return/ enter won't work. You can kind of work around that, but then when you try to send, it won't. And then it won't even save a draft. And then your email screen just sits there frozen, and you can't do anything. If you try to go into other folders like "sent" or "draft" there's nothing there.
The only thing to do is exit out and try to get back in. Sometimes that works, sometimes that doesn't. Sometimes the problem resolves quickly. Somtimes it goes on and on. It's not a matter of the internet going down. I can access other web sites with no problem. I can even access the main page at It's the online email that's the problem. Sometimes when I have tried to get back on after exiting or even rebooting the entire system, I get a message about their server not responding. It seems the problems occur at times of peak usage....mid morning, around lunchtime, after school, after work. Also very difficult on Friday night sometime. I can just imagine people logging on looking for things to do to kick off their weekend.
Charter has an M.O.....Act like you care, when you are not going to do what REALLY needs to be done to fix the problem. The deal is, unless they have a horde of angry customers, they won't do anything. Period. So it doesn't matter if I'm inconvenienced, or that I work at home and this is a serious impediment to what I do. Today it took me an hour to try to send one lousy email. What a huge waste of time. Their system also has problems emailing attachments.
I have called. I have been in touch with a Charter rep on Facebook. I have documented ongoing problems. No matter the issue, no matter what you send them, you always get the same response...we'll send a tech out. So you have to take time to make arrangements to stop whatever you are doing to deal with a tech at your home who can't do a d*** thing because the problem is NOT at your home, it's with Charter. I can't tell you how many times I have been through this with Charter on internet and cable issues. Same drill, over and over again.
I must give props to the people in customer service and to the poor techs who get dispatched on these fools' errands. It's not them. This kind of crap comes from the top. The tech came today, checked everything out, and sure enough there was nothing he could do. He said he'd report it. He was very nice, sympathetic. I expect that what he tells them will fall on deaf ears.
Next year things should change where I'll be able to change my email address without a huge problem. Right now it's impossible. I'm going to dump Charter as soon as I can. If you have another alternative, use it.

I decided to try ATT internet as an alternative to Charter. The salesman at the store was great, but the internet never worked. ATT shipped one modem, then replaced it with in a week, and the new modem didn't work either. The service came with a 30 day risk free trial and we cancelled after 3 weeks, since the service just wasn't working. ATT billed a $150 cancellation fee, even though our contract specified otherwise. Our local ATT store tried to help us, but the collection department continued to insist that the fee was owed. They turned the account over to a collection agency! We contacted our state attorney general (consumer protection office) who intervened. ATT then contacted us and with

the charges. It took over 4 months to resolve. I would recommend that you never use ATT, even if the local level people seem honest and straightforward. My worst consumer experience ever.
