"The carpentry work done by
Madison HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
is excellent. All other work was done by sub-contractors. They took time for discussions with me and time to do a very careful job. They worked around my desire to do painting, staining, varnishing and wallpapering myself. I was told that, unlike other general contractors, they inform the client that they charge 20% for handling dealings with the subcontractors. The honesty is nice, but 20% seems excessive to me. They did a bit of carpentry for me at no charge, namely, constructing an arch over a path so that the rain downspout will not

"They were great. They were here when they said they would be here. They got the work finished in a day. The new furnace works fine. They were very knowledgeable. They cleaned everything up when they were done. It was a great job. "

How much does it cost to install a new furnace?

Two warranties govern furnace installs. The first is the manufacturer's warranty, which comes with the furnace and protects against defects in the furnace itself. A contractor's warranty covers the labor involved to make repairs if the furnace doesn't work properly. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Wayne L. of St. Louis)

Are you thinking about installing a new furnace? The following price considerations can help you determine the best furnace for your home, and save money too.

What is a fair price for R-22?

By 2015, there will be a 90 percent reduction in the production of R-22. By 2020, it will no longer be produced at all. Because production is limited, costs to charge existing units that are leaking R-22 refrigerant have gone up and are only expected to rise. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member John R. of Lake Mary, Fla.)

Dear Angie: My air conditioning contractor just charged me $100 per pound for R-22 refrigerant. This is a lot more than I paid four years ago. Is this a fair price these days?

Which furnace filters provide the best indoor air quality?

Replacing the air filter will improve air quality and extend the life of a furnace.

Be sure to check the minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating when evaluating air filters. You'll also want to learn about the types of filters and what products improve your home’s indoor air quality.

Understanding furnace efficiency ratings

Check the big yellow tag on your furnace for the energy efficiency rating. (Photo courtesy of Angie’s List member Cynthia M. of Springfield, Mass.)

Understanding what energy efficiency ratings mean for furnaces can help you make the best purchase. Ratings don't tell you how much the energy costs will be, but they tell you how well the furnace uses the energy.

"
Madison HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
arrived a bit late. We were given an arrival time of 10:45AM and Noon, and he arrived about 12:30PM.
Madison HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
was very efficient, and told us the condition of our heat pump and exchanger. Price was $125 for the visit, less a $15 coupon - seemed high for just a checkup."

"We spent $4485 on that work. We thought that they were just very honest and professional. We never bid on it because we just like working with them and we know the people. They were wonderful people. "

"They were very knowledgeable about steam boilers, something that I found is rare. Other bidders were going to simply replace the old boiler with a new one.

from

immediately showed me why the poor piping job caused the old boiler to die decades before its time. They reconfigured the piping into the new system, and installed several "blowdown" valves which would let me clean out the sediment that builds up in the system and kills your boiler. they were not the cheapest bid, but within a couple hundred bucks. their knowledge of steam systems and the repiping they did more than made up for the price difference. They have a crew that installs steam systems all the time. Steam is somewhat rare in homes and they knew everything about it. A knowledgeable technician came back after several months to "skim" the oil residue out of the boiler, and he instructed me about how to clean out the system myself--something that will save money on a boiler checkup, since they won't have to do that."

"We decided it was time to to replace our ~50 year old gas furnace (forced air) and finally install central A/C in our 110 year old home. We called
Madison HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
for a quote and met with HVAC Tech Service Advisor
Madison HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
Heiar on 4/15/10.
Madison HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
spent almost an hour with us from start to finish with his quote. He was very honest in his oservations/recommendations about what we needed and didn't need. (We had done our homework in researching furnaces & A/C's and install pitfalls and were waiting to see if he was going to try to pull a fast one over us, and he never did.) Working with
Madison HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
was like being with that favorite uncle of yours that you go to when you need advice about fixing something like your car. He is a good down-to-earth, friendly and trustworthy person.
Madison HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
was very flexible and reasonable with regards to some electrical upgrade work that was needed (He could use Academy Electric or we could call our own electrician.) We obtained a quote from a competitor whose quote was $300 cheaper. We decided upon
Madison HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
because their warranty was much better in our favor (
Madison HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
: 10yr/5yr parts/labor. Competitor: 5yr/1yryear parts/labor.) We indicated to
Madison HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
that we were in a rush to get the furnace and the A/C install completed ASAP since the Focus on Energy rebates were running out. He completely understood and had the entire job done in 1 day on 4/22/10. The follow-up after the install - phone call from

and literature from

's office - were all spot on for good customer service... We wouldn't hesitate for a moment to recommend
Madison HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
and we'll certainly use them for our annual furnace inspections over MG&E. (Note: The invoice price of $6,360 doesn't include the Focus on Energy (federal and state) or Federal Tax Credit for 2010.)

"I spent less than $200. They were responsible for doing my heating plant at my home. So, I have them out to do service. They are very good. However, it is dependent on the person who comes out. I have had mixed experiences with them. It all depends on which of the two owners come out. It is great when I get the one guy and it is terrible when I get the other guy. Their price is average. They also came out to give me a bid. I didn?t go with them with the bid as the guy I liked was having a hip replaced. I will use this company in the future, provided there is the guy I like. "

"They were very responsive, returning our voice mail first thing (7:10 a.m.) in morning. Sent their repair person within two hours. He was on time, courteous, easy to talk with, and went right to the source of the problem. He was in and out in 45-60 minutes. We had read a review of
Madison HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
's service, in which it was noted that they charge $99 for the service call, and add labor on top of that. So, we knew what to expect, and had left voice messages for three or four firms including
Madison HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
. They were the first to return our call (by 10 minutes) and so we were happy to have them here so quickly and responsively. I can see why they charge the minimum (they don't compute travel time in their charges, and they need to be profitable). Yet it feels, to some extent, like double charging when they can detect the issue almost instantly, and the clock starts running (plus the $99) immediately. It's like paying a cover charge AND a drink minimum in a night club. As I say, we knew how they charge, and the work was excellent. I'd prefer it if their pricing structure were different. But they are professionals, and we appreciate their work.

"The price they quoted me was $3800 and my experience with them was very good. The guy met with me, followed up several time via phone and was prompt with the information. He was very helpful and I would recommend them to others. Based on the interaction I would say they were excellent. "

"This was a Saturday. $100 to talk to the dispatcher who was rude. $100 for the trip charge. Technician could not find the problem, but "cleaned" the furnace - total bill $350. Since he could not find the problem, their work was guaranteed for 30 days. As he was leaving he mentioned that if it was my blower motor, it would be $3,000. In May it started happening again (way past the 30 day guarantee), so I had the company come out who installed the furnace. This technician found the problem right away and replaced the furnace motor ($450 - NOT $3,000). He stated I could get a whole new furnace for $3,000. The problem has not returned. "
