"I was very pleased with their service. Punctual, courteous, cleaned up after, gave helpful comments with care and cleaning. I do not remember the cost at this" time, but will say that being a single middle income working woman, it was affordable for me with some preplanning. I still look at my floors and am so pleased with the work they did!! Would definitely hire them again!!!!! Also, the new hallway floors match almost perfectly with the original oak floors installed 50 -55 years prior. They are all in great shape and am proud of them!!!

-Susan R.

"We got three estimates to refinish the maple floors in our 100 year-old house. 's came in the lowest and he seemed the most knowledgable." He advised us to not stain our old maple floors as they don't take stain very well (something that we didn't know and no other company mentioned!). His quote was also the only one that included 3 coats of oil-based poly rather than the 2 quoted to us by the other vendors. We opted for the semi-gloss and they are gorgeous! worked miracles on these worn floors and now they are a highpoint of the house. He also finished a few days ahead of schedule! We couldn't be happier and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to family and friends.

Hardwood Floors

Few home improvement choices add as much character and warmth — not to mention resale value — as hardwood flooring. But before hiring a flooring contractor to install or repair hardwood flooring, it’s important to know both its advantages and disadvantages.

Angie's Answers

From the wall street journal online:

"Etiquette and tipping experts agree that tipping a contractor and his employees isn't expected because contractors offer to do a job for you at a specific price. Any extra money they would want would be built into their bid. Also, it's a business relationship rather than one where they are performing a personal service for you like a waiter or a maid. But if the employees do extra jobs around the house, then experts say it is appropriate to tip a cash amount equivalent to the task; "tip gifts" such as cookies and drinks can count. "The key to tipping is whether or not it was outside the scope of what was normally expected," says Mark Brenner, author of "Tipping for Success!"

My opinion is that a little bit of courtesy (snacks, drinks, expression of appreciation etc.) goes a long way and upon completion of their work you feel compelled by a job well done to offer a little extra in the form of a tip - go for it, but do not feel obligated.
I agree with your choice - this is about the only product that can realistically, for a large room, be taken out and cleaned up after a flood and reused, thouhg carpet can be if you strip it into smaller pieces to carry wet, AND you have somewhere to wash and dry it - that is usually the problem. However, bear in mind it still has to be done within about 2 days or mildew/mold will grow on it, and may or may not be totally removeable. My personal preferences - mostly because their products are consistent, the joints stay snapped together, and they are not overly soft (a problem with cheap vinyls) are Pergo, Tarkett, Armstrong. Whatever you buy, be sure it can come back apart - some plank products are not made with a self-adhering contact glue in the joints that prevent you from taking it apart again, and some brands their snap design, while maybe better at preventing joint separation, cannot feasibly be unsnapped without tearing or breaking it off. Also, be sure whatever brandname and product line you choose it 100% vinyl (other than the urethane surface protective layer) - many vinyl floor products have paper or fiber cores or other water-absorbing components. Remember that, on concrete, since it wicks soil moisture through it, you till need a 6 mil vapor barrier under the flooring and positively sealed all around the edges to avoid the risk of mold growing on the underside of the vinyl.
Agreed.  If you have existing cracking in porcelain you need to know the cause first.  I don't know of any reputable contractor that would dare install tile over existing tile.  Also, any manufacturer warranties for defects would be null due to improper installation.  Did the contractor offer this solution or did you ask for it?  The mear fact that he is agreeing to or offering it tells me you need to leave this guy for someone who knows what they are talking about before he does only half the job which will have to be redone in the near future, costing you more in the long run.

I get so many calls from customers that were talked into a "cheaper" way to do something only to find the work very sub-par.  The sad part is they are out the money they spent in the first place along with the additional amount I have to charge just to undo what the first contractor did before I can do it right.  This floor could end up costing you double what it should if it's not done right.

Hardwood Flooring reviews in Madison

Wood flooring installed 2 days. Beautiful wood and professional install. Carpet installed in 2 hours with old carpet removal. Excellent work.
- John H.

We want to thank Hubie , owner of Flooring Coverings International, , salesman, and and his crew, installers, for their time and efforts, and most importantly, their work ethic. Hubie and his team stepped in to complete the installation work in our house when our original installer ...More left without notice after just starting the work. At the time, we were concerned that no one would be able to start the work for several months. came to our house within a couple of days to give us an estimate and to talk with us about how the work would be done. He raised issues that the original installer did not and how they would be handled. He told us that his company could start the work in a couple of weeks and that it would only take a few days to complete. While was on travel, Hubie took over the lead. He answered all of our questions during installation and allow us to change the tile that was to be installed in the entrance way. and his crew did an excellent job installing the wood floor and steps and the ceramic tile. The crew had the proper tools from the beginning to do the job. They installed the floors and steps within three days even when problems needed to be solved. also kept us informed of what he was doing and why he was doing it. Everyone treated us professionally and responded to us when we had questions. We are completely satisfied and would use the company for other flooring projects.
- Diane B.

We had extensively discussed that we wanted the new wood floor to as closely match our existing floor as possible. We therefore interleaved some recovered oak long boards with newer product. This blended well and had the desired effect of mimicking foundation settling in the rest of the house leading to some wider spaces between a few boards. However, ...More based on this, he assumed that we wanted what he called a "rustic" look, and claimed that the person who installed the floors had told him this. The installer confirmed that he said no such thing. However, based on this assumption, did none of the usual patching of nail holes, chipped floor board edges, and a miss-cut board end. As a result, we have gross defects in areas including exposed nail holes, the chipped edges (which catch on stocking feet and risk full splintering off of pieces of wood, and the previously mentioned misscut board the installer placed. The lack of these normal repairs was only noted after he had stained the floor, and when this was pointed out, he said he would have to resand and restain the floor after patching it and implied that this would require additional charges, though did not state this explicitly. Even so, he charged us the normal rate (as if he had done that patching), despite previous conversations in which he was quite clear that if he had to do extensive patching due to the use of recovered oak, he would likely have to charge us more. We agreed to that higher cost in the original job request.
We had also asked that an extended flat threshold be sanded flush with the boards. I went so far as to use a computer drawing program to diagram what part of the threshold needed to be sanded flush. He did this, but he also sanded the raised threshold immediately below French doors which separate the room. We had wanted that left alone given that it matched the existing doors. In the process of doing this unwanted , it was sanded unevenly (leaving visible raised edges due to holding the sander in one place and grinding too far down). In addition, the effort damaged the existing floor outside of the room remodel, the floor which we were trying to match. This damage was not noted until after we had paid in full and he had left. It had been beneath blue tape which had been placed over it. He later stated that his assistant must have caused the damage despite his having told the assistant not to do the if he could not do it well.
While was willing to return in order to sand, stain and refinish the areas of damage, we were so disappointed in the professionalism that we did not wish to have him back. In fact, we continue to consider finding a different floor sander/stainer/finisher redo the whole project.
While we did call to explain our frustration and encouraged him to clarify the misscomunication with the installer, and expressed regret at having a disappointed customer, he made no move to discuss a partial refund or other solution to the problems (like the boards now catching socks), despite our having expressly stated that a refund was in order due to having charged full-price for and staining which normally entails patching nail holes and other minor blemishes, as well as the charge for the threshold we did not want sanded. We have asked the installer to stop recommending him.
- Frederick L.

came over within a day or two of my initial call to him. He took measurements, provided insight, and gave me an estimate onsite. I had obtained two other estimates and 's came in the lowest. He had also shown me some of his work at a house he had just completed. I was impressed, so I hired him. ...More I talked to him a couple of weeks later about colors; he voluntarily returned to sand a section of the floor and down some test colors. I ended up settling with a dark stain ( midnight mahogany, which is a blend).
The floors turned out beautifully. My floors are red oak hardwood, originally installed in the early 1900s (main house) and also in the mid-1900s (addition to the house). In the main house, the floors were in good shape and had never been sanded before. The floor in the addition had substantial damage, probably caused by dog urine. predicted that his and my choice of dark stain would remedy the damage. He was right. He also pushed for an oil-based stain and satin polyurethane; the latter of which can be tinted with stain to even out any inevitable non-uniform absorption of stain by the wood. Again, he was right. I had seen the daily progress and saw quite a transformation during the week he completed the work. I am really happy with how everything turned out.
Prior to starting the job, I had removed the carpet, pad, staples, and tack strips. I also removed all interior doors. I didn't remove any of the shoe molding; I decided that I preferred to sand and paint them after finished up instead of removing and replacing the shoe molding (which is stubbornly attached to my baseboards). My house was unoccupied at the time.
Overall, I'm very satisfied. I have no hesitation whatsoever recommending him. He was extremely prompt, responsive, insightful, professional, and friendly.

I got several estimates for having this done and I was surprised at the variation in price. had a very competitive price. They were very busy and it took about a month from when I signed the estimate to when they could come out to start the work. This was a bit longer than some of the other estimates, but not unreasonably so. ...More The work takes two days. They sand the floors the first day and apply a coat of finish. They come back the next day and the floors and apply a second coat. They say that you can move furniture back into the rooms that were sanded after a day, but I waited a bit longer.
They arrived pretty much on time, I let them in and showed them which rooms to sand, and left to go to work. They finished (I am told) in the middle of the afternoon, and were gone when I came back from work. They showed up on time the following day to finish the floors. I actually had them split the job into two parts, and my experience both times were similar. In one room, they had some trouble removing a previous finish, and they called me and had me come to take a look at it.
Overall, I was happy with the quality of the service, and the floors look quite a bit better. They were tolerant of my asking a bunch of questions and were flexible about scheduling the two part job. The only thing to be aware of is that they were very busy so give them a call way in advance if you need this service done. There was not a problem with sawdust from the sanding. I was a bit wary of that, but they put up plastic to keep the dust from getting everywhere and used vacuums to minimize the dust.

I had used MWF maybe five years ago for a complete refinishing of our floors, and they did a great job. Now it was time for a touchup, including filling and camouflage of a couple of very noticeable gashes . The Angle's List big deal was just the ticket. They worked within our schedule, and were very clean and efficient. The gashes are gone, ...More unless you look up close -- a 98% improvement, which is all you can ask for in a situation like this.

The job performed was terrible. The stain was applied unevenly and has worn worse. The wood that they patched into our kitchen was installed incorrectly so two boards raise and create a seam down the middle of the kitchen (more pronounced in the winter). This shortcut they took can not be fixed without removing all of the flooring and redoing it. There ...More were also strange marking in the finish. When we brought in another contractor to see if the job could be fixed, they figured out the markings were footprints with the bottom seam of the bootie firmly indented throughout the room and clearly visible. refused to do anything / fix anything/ make any financial concession. When I see their trucks, I literally cringe.

The project started off being pushed back a week due to Majestic Flooring advising they were delayed on another job. Worked out well with us at the time, so we rescheduled for them to start days later. Our quoted 2 day project turned into 4 days. Majestic didn't coordinate the job well at all once it started & even pulled a "no show" ...More one afternoon when they told us they were to return. Left a message for the owner, who decided to turn his phone off that. We were told by the crew they were out of town on other jobs, and could not get to us after all. Days later still no call back or apology from , the owner who was left a message to call us back about some concerns. Very disappointed in the communication level at the end & how the owner fell short. Would have appreciated him to be upfront with us about any further delays vs. being left in the basement waiting in fumes with a stressed out pet. Putting people out for additional meals because their kitchen is in their living room, and having to miss additional work days with no notice is just not considerate, and no way to run a business. No excuses. On a positive note the finished floors look beautiful! The crew that performed the work were very nice & professional.
