" was best for our service from start to finish. Of all the places I spoke to, they were responsive and prompt with phone calls and appointments." Although it wasn't the lowest quote, we choose F.L. Inc for their professionalism. Our project turned out perfect and our installer was thorough and did an amazing job while being respectful of my curious children.

B
"The best thing was their ability to get the job installed in my short timeframe. There were communication problems, however with instructions to let the guys in" as well as more work I needed to fix my bedroom floor. They use contractors and some information was not communicated to them a couple of times. Once, the carpet installers were locked out of my home and we had to reschedule. I thought the price was high, but I was in a bind with my schedule. I needed the job done within one week and they got it done. One thing that I was a little annoyed with was their final "walk through" Basically, they were looking for their money. I believed that I could pay a little later after receiving the bill, but no. I did call the owners, asking them to keep my check a while and not deposit it. She said ok and to call her and let her know when it was ok. Well, they didn't wait until I called and they deposited it today. I'm not too happy about that. I had to ask a couple different people about my master floor and basically, they could not fix it.

From the wall street journal online:

"Etiquette and tipping experts agree that tipping a contractor and his employees isn't expected because contractors offer to do a job for you at a specific price. Any extra money they would want would be built into their bid. Also, it's a business relationship rather than one where they are performing a personal service for you like a waiter or a maid. But if the employees do extra jobs around the house, then experts say it is appropriate to tip a cash amount equivalent to the task; "tip gifts" such as cookies and drinks can count. "The key to tipping is whether or not it was outside the scope of what was normally expected," says Mark Brenner, author of "Tipping for Success!"

My opinion is that a little bit of courtesy (snacks, drinks, expression of appreciation etc.) goes a long way and upon completion of their work you feel compelled by a job well done to offer a little extra in the form of a tip - go for it, but do not feel obligated.
?
I agree with your choice - this is about the only product that can realistically, for a large room, be taken out and cleaned up after a flood and reused, thouhg carpet can be if you strip it into smaller pieces to carry wet, AND you have somewhere to wash and dry it - that is usually the problem. However, bear in mind it still has to be done within about 2 days or mildew/mold will grow on it, and may or may not be totally removeable. My personal preferences - mostly because their products are consistent, the joints stay snapped together, and they are not overly soft (a problem with cheap vinyls) are Pergo, Tarkett, Armstrong. Whatever you buy, be sure it can come back apart - some plank products are not made with a self-adhering contact glue in the joints that prevent you from taking it apart again, and some brands their snap design, while maybe better at preventing joint separation, cannot feasibly be unsnapped without tearing or breaking it off. Also, be sure whatever brandname and product line you choose it 100% vinyl (other than the urethane surface protective layer) - many vinyl floor products have paper or fiber cores or other water-absorbing components. Remember that, on concrete, since it wicks soil moisture through it, you till need a 6 mil vapor barrier under the flooring and positively sealed all around the edges to avoid the risk of mold growing on the underside of the vinyl.
?
Agreed.  If you have existing cracking in porcelain you need to know the cause first.  I don't know of any reputable contractor that would dare install tile over existing tile.  Also, any manufacturer warranties for defects would be null due to improper installation.  Did the contractor offer this solution or did you ask for it?  The mear fact that he is agreeing to or offering it tells me you need to leave this guy for someone who knows what they are talking about before he does only half the job which will have to be redone in the near future, costing you more in the long run.

I get so many calls from customers that were talked into a "cheaper" way to do something only to find the work very sub-par.  The sad part is they are out the money they spent in the first place along with the additional amount I have to charge just to undo what the first contractor did before I can do it right.  This floor could end up costing you double what it should if it's not done right.

was excellent and responsive both to our time constraints and need to use low VOC, healthier floor finishes. He provided several recommendations and information to help us select just the right one. He matched the new flooring sections so perfectly that we can't even see where the old ends and the new begins. We would ...More definitely call him in the future ford any hardwood flooring needs. It's nice to hire a hard worker who does what he says he'll do when he says he'll do it and patiently answers questions and phone calls!

was amazing to work with. After we first contacted him, he was able to come by and do an estimate within 24 hours. He took a lot of time going over options with us and answering questions. He gave us advice about the pros and cons of different materials but it was clear that he would be willing to work with whatever we chose. ...More
The entire project took two and a half days and each day he arrived promptly and cleaned up everything before he left each day. He was willing to help us move the appliances in and out of the kitchen, which is something that another contractor who gave us an estimate wouldn't do. That was a nice bonus since it would have been really difficult to move those things on our own.
It was a pleasure having in our house. He was friendly and very respectful of our space. He checked in with us at every stage to be sure that we knew what he was doing and spent a lot of time going over different layout options for the tile.
The bill for the project was exactly what he estimated and included everything except for the tile and mortar. We felt that the price was more than fair given all the extra materials that were included in the quote and the fact that he disposed of all the old flooring himself.
Now for the most important part: the end product is beautiful! All of his cuts were very precise and the tiles lined up perfectly. He put new thresholds on both of the doorways leading into the kitchen and capped a raw where the new floor meets the basement stairs. is clearly very detail oriented and takes a lot of pride in his work.
We love our new floor and are already planning on hiring again to do a back splash. We would recommend him 100%!

is the man! From the first visit to the final installation date he was amazing to work with. We had Home Depot come out as well, but their overall caginess and inability to answer questions about the project while they were at our house did not instill much trust. We knew our house was going to be a bit more difficult and ...More was able to answer all of our questions with solutions that in the end made the choice easy for us. Everything was done in a timely fashion from initial estimate through installation.
I've had some great experiences on Angie's list, but was the best.
I will definitely be using him for all of my flooring needs in the future.

We called based on positive reviews on Angie’s List. Our experience was also very positive. FCI has no showroom. Instead, a representative brings samples to your home. They specialize in carpeting, although they also offer limited lines from a few other suppliers.
Friendly ...More brought numerous samples to our house and helped us select carpeting for all the above grade rooms of our house. This assistance was based on OUR preferences in regard to quality, style, color, fiber, and stain and soil resistance. He was also helpful in selecting the appropriate padding for the carpet and our carpet traffic circumstances. We felt no pressure to pick any particular carpet. We were not steered toward the more expensive offerings. We also discussed warranty and carpet care issues.
An important feature of FCI’s service is that you have a single person as your contact from the beginning to the end of the process. We felt free to call with questions about the product, installation or post-installation issues. He was prompt in responding to our input. As proper installation is as important as the carpet itself, we were happy to find that FCI uses a well experienced team who have been with the company for several years. They arrived on time and installed the entire 200 yards in about a day and a half.
Another positive about this outfit is that they do everything relating to the job that you want done. In our case, they moved (and replaced) the furniture from each room, removed and disposed of the old carpeting and padding, installed new padding and carpeting according to Carpet and Rug Institute approved methods (I actually printed out the latest standards and watched for compliance during installation). This was followed by a walk-through with . In our case, we noticed a carpet-to-flooring transition that we felt could be improved. The installation team returned within a day or so to rectify the problem.
A final point is pricing. The price quoted was competitive and was based on a detailed printed breakout of the cost of each aspect of the process. This included the cost of the carpet and pad, product freight and local delivery, removal and disposal of existing carpet and pad, disposal environmental fee, furniture removal and replacement, and installation of carpet and pad in rooms and on stairs. There were no “surprise” charges. Indeed, their estimate of the amount of carpet needed was short by about $400, yet they ate the cost themselves and refused our offer to pay half the cost overrun!
We are very pleased with the whole experience and with the carpeting. We highly recommend FCI to you for carpet work. They also do other flooring products. Although we have no direct experience with them for these products, it seems likely they would do an excellent job.

We set up the preliminary contact through Angie's list, were contacted from the front office within 24 hours to set up an appointment with their field representative, . showed up exactly on time, discussed with me exactly what I wanted, taking notes as we talked. He then measured both bathrooms ...More and some further discussion regarding the finer points of the installation. He then provided me with an estimate, left contact information and left = absolutely no pressure - no special deals if you purchase today - as I appreciate.
We determined this was the best estimate of the 5 we had, Others weren't sure of the work and all were at least #200 higher on their bids. I sent an email on Saturday AM to have them contact me. To my surprise called around 4PM that day (I was expecting them to call on Monday). We set an approximate date for the work to be done. On Monday I was contacted by the installation foreman that they had a job cancellation and would we want the work done starting on Tuesday? We agreed, on a 9AM start but there was an issue and they couldn't start until after lunch.
The flooring Techs arrived at 1:45, one started unloading the trailer while the other came in and examined the bathrooms. He also asked questions regarding his portion of the job and explained what they would be doing. They set to work removing the toilets (I was replacing one with a more efficient one). I had previously removed the trim as I wanted to refinish it, and I would reinstall it when they were done. They worked until 6:30 PM (with our permission) to make sure they would complete the job. Even then they asked if I needed them to do any other work while they were there (reinstall the trim, etc.).
Overall, I would say this was a very good experience, an I will definitely utilize them in the future.

I was looking to change the carpet in 3 rooms and a hallway. I found the carpet I wanted at a retailer and contacted to do the install. He came once to give me a rough estimate as I was also considering going with . He price for install along with what I paid for the materials came in a bit less than ...More , but the main reason I chose was for the personal service. He helped me move some remaining furniture and removed all the old carpet in his price. He even worked with me to do a small vinyl tile section at the doorway. It was only about 500 sq ft of work, so he was done in one day easily. I am very pleased with the quality of his work, attention to detail and the personal service. I will use and recommend him in the future.

This was a horrible experience. I get angry everytime I at my kitchen flooring.
I spoke to , and told him what I wanted. So he sent out one of his guys to look at it and give me an estimate. This guy claimed at the time to own his own remodeling service somewhere in , so ...More I thought he knew what he was doing. He did not.
He gave me a price of $600 to install vinyl flooring, but that I had to pay for materials. Which I did, it sounded quite reasonable to me.
But things started going wrong the minute he walked into my home. The first thing I noticed is that there was only one man to do the job. Considering laying down a roll of vinyl flooring, I'd figured it would take two people to do the job. After he removed the old flooring, he tried to vacuum up his mess with my $250 vacuum cleaner. He dropped the vacuum cleaner and broke it. had to go out and purchase a new one.
This guy had a hard time staying on task. He loved to talk and at one point my daughter and I were in the living room, watching TV and talking, and he stopped what he was doing to come into the living room, join the conversation, and comment on what was on the television. Is that professional?
When he unrolled the vinyl in order to it down, the vinyl ripped! So he had to do a cobble job of cutting out a patch to fit into the area that had ripped, and glued it in. The trouble was that the flooring has a pattern and the pattern did not match up.
Then when he was cutting the vinyl around the edges of the walls and cabinets, I noticed he did not have a square in order to cut straight edges. His cuts were raggedy. I even offered to let him use my yardstick to help him cut a straight though he didn't take the offer. I was aghast at that he did not have a tool to perform this job. And I don't think he even had a sharp edged blade because the cuts around the door jambs were really bad.
So then, to fix his mistakes he had to purchase half-round instead of quarter-round edging to cover up those nasty raggedy edges. Here again, he did not have the proper tools to cut around curves, so once again did a cobble job of cutting chunks of half-round to get them to fit around the curves-and his answer to that was that he would fill the with some kind of caulking so that the cuts wouldn't show. For whatever reason, he lost sight of what he said he would do, and didn't fix it. Each thing he did successively was something to cover up a previous mistake. He just kept creating more messes to fix.
When he cut the vinyl, he did not take into account the closet, so he cut the vinyl straight across the closet entry. The cut is outside of the closet, which is visible when the door is closed. The cut is raggedy and uneven. His answer to that was he was going to some kind of metal strip there, which meant taking the closet door down and shaving off some of the closet door so that the strip would fit in there. I told him no, you're not doing that. He also started to put remnants of the flooring into the closet, nothing matched, it was all patches, and began to glue it in. I told him to take it out and not to continue doing anything more in the closet. That was when I said I didn't want him doing anymore damage than he did, and called in to come and look at the floor.
When came and looked at the floor, he said to me, basically that what his technician did was a $600 job. And if I wanted it done right, I would have to pay upwards of $1500. I had to argue with him, I showed him the horrible job around the edges, the closet, and the half-round cuts he did at the curves, and he conceded that it was really bad. He also admitted that this guy had a really hard time focusing on big projects, and that he ( ) tried to give him only small jobs. Which made me wonder why he gave his guy this job to begin with.
The fact that did not bother to come to my house to give me an estimate, but to have his tech do it and then tell me I would have to pay $1500 to do it was unacceptable. We ended up agreeing to have nothing more done and that I would walk away with only the cost of the materials. I wasn't going to pay for the work that was done so improperly especially when should have hired 2 people to do the job in the first place.
It was a nightmare of an experience, which I re-live each time I walk into my kitchen.
- Karen F.
